Library-Left Alone

Caro went off to join Ben's group, and then Zelda and Sans went off to go on some personal businesses.

Twilight couldn't help but feel a little hurt. None of them felt comfortable enough to talk with her?

She was supposed to be the Princess of Friendship, and yet it suddenly felt as if in all the time she had spent in the city, she hadn't made any real new friends. (Chances are that she actually had made some friends, but just didn't feel like it at this moment.)

She sat alone for a good minute or two, before deciding that whatever the case, she couldn't just do nothing while people she cared about had troubles.

Caro seemed to be fine with Ben and the others, and she had no real way to figure out where Sans went, so she opted to quietly go outside after Zelda.

Ara Haan (Library) - Insight

"Hmmm... maybe I'll have to think about it some more," Ara concluded after Viola and Seiga made their comments on her dream. "But I'll surely keep your thoughts in mind. Thank you both for your opinions."

As time went on, more and more people seemed to approach the tea party with evident interest, and Ara took the time to greet each and every single one of them, each time with a slightly deeper bow, to the point that, by the time Garrett arrived to ask his question, she had almost touched the table with her nose twice. As for the subject... she had no idea what Garrett was talking about.

"A...challenge?" she asked, mildly puzzled by the sudden question. "Well... it'd be nice to be able to tell my friends that I'm okay and that they shouldn't worry about me, but... what kind of challenge do you mean, Mister Garrett?"

The Library, Let's Weigh Our Decisions
"For the right to call people home, eh? Well, then," said Seiga, followed up with a completely unfinished sentence as she was caught trying to give a reasonable answer to the masked fellow. The only person back home she had any reason to call was in a coma, sealed in a labyrinth, and she figured that Prince Shoutoku wouldn't particularly mind a few days without contact. Aside from the Prince, and a few mindless jiangshi who wouldn't do anything if Seiga didn't tell them to (unlike Yoshika), there was nobody awaiting her return.

But, then again, a challenge would be interesting, right? So far, even if the only such challenge she had undertaken resulted in her public humiliation, the next one should go better. It would give her something to do aside from talking to Viola. As interesting as she was, she doubted that unless they got together in secret she would never figure out her life's story. What a mysterious girl.

Seiga shrugged, and finally said, "I have no vestment in the prize, but I can lend you my servant's help in the challenge. I might even help myself, if I think I'm up to it." Yoshika nodded, without a clue as to what she was signing up for here, and said, "Of course I can help! It can't be that hard at all."

Mirai fell silent for what felt like forever. Could she tell the people here about her power? Would they even understand? Maybe the best thing to do would be to hide...but that hadn't worked out before. She knew what she had to do.

In response to Rex, she took the bandages off her right hand and formed a sword with the blood that spewed out.

Viola I Library I Interruptions

"You're welcome," I answered Ara, still intrigued on the subject, It was fun though, to speculate what her visions might have meant.

It was then that I noticed the library is starting a bit too crowded on the first floor for my comfort, with our little tea party gaining plenty of attention from others. But so long as they either express interest in officially joining in on this activity or leave us be in peace, I suppose it's fine.

And it's not even that bad. With all these people here, I've managed to eavesdrop on what others' are talking about while remaining perfectly inconspicuous as the party's host. How convenient.

Then a man came by and requested the tea party's aid which involves the fate of his world, if I follow the arguments between Rex and him correctly. He made a convincing speech, and even brought up that this all is nothing more but a sandbox for the Author.

But is it really worth risking my stay here further, especially in a particularly troublesome day like the ones with the zombies? Of course not. But if it helps getting in others good graces...

"I'm sure many of us would love to help," I began. "But is that wise? We probably won't have much issues, but what you're doing affects and risks the entire City as a whole, just to send a single message to your world and your world alone." By now, I began staring at him contemplatively. "I'm not sure how some whose worlds may have been in far dire states than yours would react to that. And many more still will potentially suffer a fate far worse than death precisely because death is meaningless here. I'm certain they'll be unkind to you if they know you did this without their consent. Are you really prepared to face the consequences?"

I took a brief moment of my time to finish the last sip my tea. "If you're fine with that, then I suppose I could lend you my own signature."

Lucas looked a bit concerned when Lune drank that strange tea. After seeing that Lune is fine, Lucas just tilted her head in confusion. Lune nervously laughed and just pointed to the box containing the “Health Drink” tea packets. It reads, “This tea will restore your stamina in a heartbeat. Side effects include stomach cramps, stomachaches, and a bad taste in your mouth.”

Garrett showed up and wanted everyone's help to complete an important challenge. Didn't Rex ask Lune if she wanted to complete that same challenge earlier. Lune shook her head in response and said, “I'd love to help, but is it worth it, really?”

"Y-y-yeah... but... I mean..." Morty struggled to articulate his argument advocating why exactly he should stick with someone who - apparently- had a rap sheet the size of a small continent and had done a hell of a lot of terrible things to a staggering variety of people, things, people who were also things, and less identifiable beings besides.

"... I dunno, he's my grandpa, okay?" Morty finally said, sounding more defensive than anything else. "I-I haven't seen him for, jut- almost- like, twelve years, he comes into our life allovasudden and lives in our basement, and... and..." Morty trailed off again, momentarily flashing back to his many long and occasionally humiliating jaunts across the multiverse.

"... I-if-we-I say the wrong thing, I mean..."

It wasn't as though any of the Smiths really knew what Rick did in his spare time. Drinking - well, it wasn't like Rick was pretty much always in some state of intoxication or hangover, so it was hard to imagine that their grandfather devoting an hour or two of his life to just getting drunk every night. His friends, or what friends of his Morty had met at that party a few weeks ago, well, they were probably billions of lightyears away at the best of times.

"Who? Oh, Unity. Yeah, well... I mean, honestly, we're talking about an entity that thrives on enslavement, y'know? It's not cool. Fun's fun, but who needs it? I'll be in the garage."

The day when Rick came home from Unity - well, you didn't have to be some telepathic parasite to see that Rick wasn't in a good place. He excused himself, went to the garage, locked the door, and... well, a day passed, and there was school and work and chores and stuff... and then another day, and it wasn't until Jerry stumbled on Rick's prone body lying slouched on the table, next to a shattered red crystal bulb and a jury-rigged gizmo - that the family realized that Rick hadn't just packed his things and vanished into an entirely subjective idea of space-time was.

"You... you okay there, Rick?" asked Morty as he tried to rouse his grandfather as gently as possible, poking at his arm and trying to see if Rick was conscious enough to take note. note

"Mm. Lemme be."Rick waved a vague hand at the table as Morty poked him again.

"Rick, it's 3 PM and Mom told me to tell you to, uh, to-to get you to bed. Or unless you want a coffee or something, I guess." Tug, push.

I'm fine here, Morty... f-f-f... go away."

Morty sighed again. "C-can't you just get up or something? Y-you can't just go up and pass out on the table after... inventing..." Morty shot a glance at the machine, whatever it was for, and the small pile of smeared ashes directly beneath it. "... you know, w-whatever that is. Get up, Rick." He rolled his eyes and tugged on Rick's sleeve again, trying to get his grandfather off the table.

"Morty... g-go... go to... go do something that doesn't involve me, okay? Go do math homework or somethin'."

"I don't got- I don't have math homework."

"Morty - I- I know that this is going to sound sudden and random a-and overly-sappy and maybe out of character but -" Morty tensed and dreaded the next string of words in that sentence, because if he knew Rick it would probably entail having to draw fire for some horrible creature or involve humiliating abuses of his privacy and freedom - "but if I...-" Rick was struggling through the hangover "... if for some reason I'm not here anymore- like- if I just -"

"If you what?" With one last heave, Morty pulled Rick up by his hair, dragging him back onto the seat of his lab chair where he stared up at the ceiling, dazedly trying to martial the next car in his train of thought.

"Tell Beth... tell my daughter that she's a good person, okay? That sh-she deserved better than what she got. And that- and that - whatever happens to me in the future... she can- you know, sh-she'll make it through because... because she's a good person. A-and urgh tell Summer that too. Yeah. Morty, y-you..." Rick pulled himself out of the chair like a giant hung-over stork unfolding himself from repose and staggered to the door, "...y-you're my little helper buddy, okay? You gotta promise me for that, Morty." Rick hauled himself over to the makeshift military cot he'd brought with him the day he showed up unannounced on their doorstep. "Y-you're... you know. You're the Mortiest Morty and all that."

"Oh. Huh. Uh. Great." Morty closed the door on his grandfather, who was industriously drooling on his pillow, and stared for a moment at the machine Rick had been working on, then to the pile of ash, then back to the shattered lightbulb. The barest outline of a deduction slowly bubbled to the surface of Morty's brain.

"... I mean Rick's smart. I dunno what will happen." Morty shook his head and jolted himself back to the present as the huge blue sight of Brother Marcus interrupted his memories. Marcus was concerned about... something, no doubt, something big and noisy and probably the size of an ocean liner coming to kill everyone, if Morty knew the Author's usual methodology.

"Okay..." he said, looking from the 300-year old ice spirit to the jetpack-wielding genetically-altered supersoldier and feeling very, very insignificant in comparison, "... s-so what do you want us to do about it? C-can't you just, like, go underwater and fight it?"

Plague Knight's explanation of the challenges wasn't reassuring. Lucas was alright at fighting things but the uncertainty the knight expressed about the amount of challenges they passed so far was disconcerting. Lucas was intrigued and asked "Can anyone t-tell m-me what the challenge is t-today?"

The man asking for help with communicating home did raise some good points, but Lucas didn't know what kind of challenges were normal around here. Without knowing that, there was no way to know how difficult the challenge they would face would be. Lucas sat quietly and thought about his response until coming to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the risk. He apologised sincerely "I'm s-sorry, but I d-don't think I can h-help you. G-good luck, though.".

Lune showed Lucas the tea she had reacted badly to. The side effects confused him a fair bit. He asked "W-Why would someone d-drink this? What would you do w-with the boost if you're in so much p-pain?". It was baffling that someone would be able to make use of the drink's effect if they were busy with sudden stomach aches right after drinking it.

Outside Library

Once she made it outside, Zelda walked around the perimeter until she wasn't near any of the doors before letting out a long sigh, looking out to sea again, and leaning up against the wall. Judging by the sky it was getting late in the day; even though she'd never left the library the whole time and it certainly wasn't as stressful as the wasteland day, it still felt like a long one.

So, what had she accomplished this whole time? She managed to set a goal for herself, and now she would hopefully be better equipped for future days, and she'd at least tried to help with the whole balcony business. Once again, however, she felt rather useless. What was worse was that today it felt like it was her fault that she didn't do anything. She could at least tried to find the anti-humans as opposed to just eavesdropping on their channel, but she didn't.

Oh, and now she also had to deal with this stupid, petty jealousy she had towards Sans and Caro, the whole reason she wanted to be alone right now to begin with. It was her own dumb fault that she didn't have any better friends than them; if she'd actually tried making some, maybe she wouldn't be feeling like they just stabbed her in the back. But she didn't, and look where she was now.

Some goddess you are.

For the time being she hadn't noticed that both Sans and Twilight had ignored her request for solitude, and she was too busy mulling over her own thoughts to pay much attention to anyone who might had followed her.

Sans looked back to see if anyone was following him and Zelda and lo and behold, Twilight decided to ignore him and go after them anyway, he briefly stopped to turn at her.

"wow do you not care for privacy at all? c'mon, i said we have to talk about some personal stuff and you have nothing to do with it," he said, then glancing at the tea party happening further back in the library, "why don't you go join that tea party going back there or somethin'?"

With that said, he got outside. Zelda didn't seem to take notice that he followed her out so he took opportunity to go to the borders and wash the ketchup off his face and hands since it would probably be a lot harder to be taken seriously with that ketchup make-up on his face.

Twilight went outside to find Zelda... and ran right into Sans. Who then gave her a lecture about privacy.

"H-Hey! I didn't know you were going to talk to Zelda! I didn't mean to interfere with anything!"

She turned away, but then just sort of... Stopped. She wasn't terribly interested in the tea party, and was still worried about Zelda.

Outside Library - I Vant to be Alone

On one hand, Zelda supposed going off alone for the sole purpose of kicking herself really wasn't going to make things better. On the other hand, she really wanted some time to mull these feelings over and maybe come up with a healthy way of dealing with them. Unfortunately, it seemed Sans was insistent on talking about it right this second.

She probably wasn't getting out of this easily, if at all. That didn't stop her from trying.

"I don't want to talk about it, Sans," she said simply, without turning to face him.

"This might be the only library I've been to, but I never expected a librarian to say her books were disposable" Curly chuckled at the thought and was about to leave the desk when Ben arrived to ask for something and help locating the Ruckus HQ, and then tried giving a short speech which sparked a little debate between them, apparently the teen had a rather poor opinion of Miss Tairiee.

Curly thought she should probably get out of the way since this new conversation had nothing to do with her, but Lucas didn't seem to be going anywhere, and she had to admit to being curious what they were talking about...

Outside the Library - Where's Cole When You Need Him?

As expected, Sans didn't budge. Well, if she wasn't getting out of it, she might as well try and get it over with quickly.

"Yes. Because you spend so much time together, and because you've been through a lot together," Zelda replied, "I'm not that unobservant."

She frowned heavily. "I fully realize that I've no right to be feeling this way. I haven't done as much with either of you as you have with each other, and after everything you two have been through together it's only natural that you'd be that close. And as a goddess I should be above such petty feelings."

She sighed painfully. "And despite all that it hurts anyway. You two have been my closest friends here. I...I've never really gotten the chance to get close to anyone else here, just because I'm not the sort cut out for the kinds of things this city throws at us on a regular basis. And if my world's lucky, I won't get to see or even talk with the only other person I've been really close with. And...now it feels like I never really contributed anything to our little group, and that you two would have been just as well off had we never met."

Outside the Library - wrong

"sure we hang out together and we've had quite a few trips down the trauma lane, but that's not just it, y'know." Sans sighed and shook his head before looking back at Zelda. "we talk. and with that i mean, whenever there's something bothering us, we talk to each other. we understand each other. we trust each other enough to open up and talk about our pains."

He paused for a moment to look at his phone's screen to see if everything was ready for what he wanted to do, which it was, so now he could focus on her.

"but you, zelda, you don't talk. numerous times i've seen that stuff is bothering you for one reason or another, but you keep bottling it all up and never tells us what you're thinking. how do you expect us to understand you, if you never talk?" he asked, looking genuinely curious, "i know everything that's going on with you. i know because i'm quite the secret keeper myself, after all, you two would never have had any clue of what i've been through if i didn't outright tell you. i've caused a lot of worry in my brother because i kept hiding stuff and now it's kinda late for me to do anything about it."

Sans paused again, slightly tugging at his scarf out of a newly created instinct, but he kept his calm composure through the whole thing even though he had some regret deep down, but he figured now was not the time to indulge in self-pity.

"you always want to help us, but you never let us help you, zelda, and you can't keep putting on a brave face and act like nothing's wrong. even the goddess needed her hero, y'know."

Outside Library - Poor Communication Kills

Zelda was silent for the entire time Sans spoke, and was silent for quite a few long moments after he finished talking.

"Well..." she started, "...I just don't like people worrying about me. It feels awfully selfish to trouble people with my problems when their own are so much greater. Before I came here none of my issues could compare to your own or Caro's, and even afterwards I still think they're not that great. Even back in Skyloft there were people who had it worse than me; there weren't many who pretty much had a free ticket into the Knight Academy despite not being cut out for knighthood, after all."

She turned to Sans fully, finally taking notice of the scarf he happened to be wearing. It looked familiar, and judging by the way Sans was tugging at it she could guess who it originally belonged to, but not wasn't the time to be asking about it.

"So I guess I've adopted the mindset that everyone else is worth more than me. That I should be worrying about them rather than the other way around, no matter how much it might hurt sometimes. Being in this city hasn't done a lot to change my views on that." She sighed and looked down at her feet. "But...you're ultimately right."

Outside the Library - virtuous flaw

"it doesn't matter if one's problems seem to be worse than yours. some people have big troubles and have already moved on, others have small problems that can become big ones if nothing is done about it. do you think i wanted any of what you and caro tried to do yesterday? you two were just so focused on trying to make things right that you acted behind my back, being so sure you knew what what the best for me despite that you didn't know me well enough to even be aware that you could freely talk about the subject with me and i wouldn't care."

Sans sighed, then opened up the dimensional box and pulled out a small giftbox identical to the one had given Caro the previous day.

"i got this for you and caro yesterday before things started blowing up, i've already given caro's hers but now was the only time i got to talk to you since that mess." He then handed it out to Zelda. "despite what you may have thought, i do care about you, i wouldn't be doing all of this if i wasn't, nor would i have been paying attention to your behavior to see if there was anything wrong with you like i've been doing pretty much since the second day we've been in this place. caro may be my 'little sister' but that doesn't mean i forgot about you."

Underwater tunnels

Brother Marcus' helmet slowly turned and looked down at Morty. "I don't expect you to do anything. I was thinking out loud" Brother Marcus said, and moved forward with heavy footfalls until he got to a part of the sloped tunnel that had windows looking out. "I do not think it would be so easy to simply go out there and fight this creature by hand" the space marine added, looking out the windows, then adding as he pointed out and downwards, "there."

Far down below, where the water was starting to be dark enough that one could no longer see through it, Jack and Morty would be able to see... Well, they couldn't really see what it was, but they could see that it was moving, that it dwarfed the buildings around it, and that they were probably only seeing a part of whatever it was. After a moment a very large tail ending in a horizontal fin sort of like a whale's swooped up as a counteraction to the thing diving down, and idly snapped off a piece of a tunnel like it offered no resistance before going down out of sight. After a brief delay, the sound of this happening caught up with the light; a deep, reverberating clanging of metal getting absolutely wrecked and crumpled.

Whatever minor comfort that this thing was staying down in the darkness might've provided was quickly offset by the fact that the light from above was slowly fading. The pitch black waters seemed to rise steadily, inch by inch.

"Get to the surface as fast as possible" Brother Marcus stated, looking over at Jack and Morty. "MOVE!" the space marine commanded them, then turned and started running back down the sloped tunnel, shaking it slightly as his footsteps thundered with the clangs of metal on metal.

"Damn it if you die from that now, your friends are gonna think we abusing you and get really mad and there's gonna be fighting and some Marvel Avenger is gonna after my ass thinking I'm the one to blame!" the militia member idly ranted, nearly hyperventilating as he quickly pushed through the door into the building.

"I need fresh water and some food, stat! It's an emergency!" Nails announced, startling and mostly confusing the patrons inside as he barged to the back area and started looking around for things. He returned to Cole with a large travel jug filled with water and a small loaf of bread in a bag. He stopped as he was handing them out to the spirit, starting to overhear what was going on through his walkie talkie...

Library

"W- Well, it's not supposed to be an insult, but I've always had a feeling that muggles might find it insulting- I've never really known any before" Thomas stammered in quick response to Ben.

Miss Tairee meanwhile, listened as Ben and Rex went on, her eyebrows lowering as Rex mentioned throwing Mary in jail, but with a quick huff she regained composure. "Are you ready to let me speak now? Good" Miss Tairee said, standing up and looking at Rex first. "If you ever see her again, then by all means, throw her in jail" the librarian told him simply, then looked to Ben and folded her arms.

"Now Ben, would you stop and think for a minute? I thought I already told you, the last time you tried this; if I were to break my boss' rules and help you, he would most likely punish me, by punishing you, by bringing something here even worse than whatever I helped you with, and use safeguards so that I couldn't do anything about it. So it's for your sake, the sake of everyone else in here, and especially the children, that I don't. Even so, I'm not just going to teleport you to their base because that is a shortsighted plan that would likely get you killed or captured; and even if I gave you directions, the shifting of the city would make them obsolete far before you get there" Miss Tairee explained to Ben at length, her tone becoming much like that of a schoolteacher telling off a student for a bad test score.

"Besides, saying that I am the only person able to do this is a factual lie. You have a plethora of alien forms at your disposal; you've met at least one person who could track Ruckus across the city; a lot of the people here in this very building right now would probably help you if you asked; the militia has patrols around the city trying to find Ruckus; and even the anti-humans don't like Ruckus and have agreed to help the militia against them, so they would possibly even help you too if you tried. You have plenty of assets at your disposal if you would just stop thinking of how to do this by yourself" Miss Tairee went on. Sometime during it, Rachel had come in from outside, listening to her walkie talkie and waiting for a chance to speak.

Finally she got impatient and let out a, "hey! Hero guys!" Then she held up her walkie talkie and pointed at it. "Something big and real bad is happening!"

On the radio channels

It started small, but after a few minutes the anti-humans' channel was rife with chatter and panic. Apparently many of the members with more sensitive hearing were barking up the walls, a few literally, about something they could hear out in the water; from the way they kept hearing it constantly, regardless of the city shifting, they were getting an idea that this thing was much, much bigger and louder than any of the other water monsters that had been around during the day.

There was also chatter on the militia's channel, as a few patrols kept calling in with reports of entire tunnel sections suddenly collapsing; one quick report even came in from a patrol that had suddenly died and regrouped with another after respawning, telling that the tunnel they had been in suddenly snapped off and sank, leaving them to quickly drown inside it. Then the chatter suddenly became more focused as a certain space marine's voice abruptly came in.

"Militia group, this is Ultramarines Battle Brother Marcus. There is a massive creature of some kind moving in the depths. I am uncertain of its composition or full capabilities, but I have witnessed it breaking sections of the tunnels with ease; I am now attempting to evacuate as many people as I can from the lower tunnels. We require heavy ordinance."

This sparked a lot of quick panic until Wells started barking some discipline into the channel, and set about orders for his people to do pretty much the same.

"Have we located any vehicles or tunnels with weapons?" Wells asked in particular once that was done. There were many negatives.

"Those pirate ships have cannons; that's all I know of sir" one of the few exceptions put in.

"I think I've seen a few structures underwater with what look like big turrets on the top, but I haven't confirmed what they are" another voice added in.
