[up] You wouldn't happen to have a link to a bigger picture. That's way too small to be useful.

Mhm, seems to be some kind of bug when directly linking to the picture within the wiki.

Here's the direct link tot the file: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/overlordmaruyama/images/8/8b/NEW_Overlord_World_Map_2_Borders.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1280?cb=20151015230320

/edit: seems like the wiki doesn't like hotlinking at all. Hope the link above works nonetheless.

I have watched Season 1 and read some of the light novel... and I honestly don't get the appeal of this series. I found it boring at best, and infuriating at worst, what with the author's apparent hate boner for anything resembling true heroism. How is it that it became so popular? I'm asking because I'm genuinely confused.

It's kind of amusing to watch normal people react to Nazarick, I guess. The important people in Nazarick itself just aren't interesting at all.

I don't know if I could really tell you what the appeal is. I mostly just think the series is okay.

[up][up] I would say that it's in large part a reaction to the current glut of generic "isekai" genre light novels and we're mostly interested in the author doing something different with the content (being the evil overlord as opposed to defeating the evil overlord) while the rest of the genre dives for the lowest common denominator and the bottom of the barrel.

I don't blame you if you run into a bad case of Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. There are times I have to space my consumption of the series out. But for me the novelty factor and wanting to see how this all ends is enough, at least for the moment.

I like the characters, the story and the world building. So, yeah....

[up] I the same.

I enjoy a good Villain Portagonist story.

Besides I don’t get the “contempt about true heroism” complaint.

I've always wanted to watch a World of Warcraft anime where Kel'Thuzad is the protagonist. I peek at clips from the dub version of the anime every once in awhile because the guy who voices Gero in Dragonball Abridged voices Ainz.

Also, reviewing the Shalltear battle, Ainz's use of RPG mechanics to cheese through fights is kind of hilarious.

[up][up][up][up] Yeah, I will agree with you that isekai shows have become tremendously repetitive and unoriginal, and I must at least applaud Overlord for doing something different with the premise.

That said, as you correctly pointed out, I have suffered Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. The world of Overlord is relentlessly bleak and good people constantly get screwed over. When being conquered and enslaved by a genocidal undead abomination with a serious case of Moral Myopia and A Million Is a Statistic is the best possible outcome, I tend to lose any incentive to see where the story goes.

I guess I have bad taste, but I'll gladly take Kirito over Ainz any day of the week. Or Naofumi, if I want an Anti-Hero.

Or, better yet, Shiroe.

[up][up] Yeah ya kinda do have bad tastes.

Kirito is inferior everyone. Everyone is automatically superior to him in every conceivable way.

To like Kirito is to like rotten diseased fish over anything..... well not rotten & diseased.

The alternatively of course, is try to find some of the pre-2000s Light Novel series to cleanse your palate. Would you believe that Crest Of The Stars was one such series?

Its interesting how FUNNY Overlord can be, considering how dark the series is. :D

Well it helps that the anime sidesteps some of the darker stuff, pretty sure we were supposed to get more info on some of Demiurge's "experiments".

Well, at the point this is in the novel (Around book 7) , it hasn't been spelled out either. Tho from what we know about Demiurge, we can assume it's fairly horrid.

Ainz grasping at straws to get details about "his" plan of world domination was assuming.

Interesting that they seem to be skipping straight to Volume 8 but the OP implies that we're getting the characters from Volume 7 at some point.

Wait, they skipped the Workers? Ha, they really are trying to downplay Ainz being an evil bastard as much as possible.

As pointed out [up][up] they're still in the opening, so they'll probably be covered after Two Leaders and lead straight into the "war". IIRC this part was before the Workers chronologically in the LN as well.

[up][up] I'm waiting for the official English releases so if the timing in the novels jumped around, that would explain why the anime is changing things about.
