[up][up][up] Last time I checked, the JoyCons were every bit as accurate as the Wii Motion+, if not more so.

I am indifferent towards Fortnite, but it's super weird to see a F 2 P get a bundle. Yes yes, premium currency thrown in, I guess. I can see how this is a clever marketing move though.

And here we go. OS 6.0 and Switch Online should be dropping anytime.

Finished with it. There's a controller update as well.

Online functionality is down, so you can't purchase online at the moment.

I mean the practical issues of how it would work is a question even if you like the game. It's designed around the Wii Motion Plus controls, and IDK if the Joycons can duplicate that.

They totally can. Skyward Sword's motion controls are based entirely on the gyroscope and accelerometer, and the camera isn't necessary at all. Joy-Cons can totally replicate that functionality.

I guess that since the Joy-Cons have more buttons than the Wii controllers, some motion controls could be assigned to buttons in handheld mode, but where's the fun in that?

So, those of you that've tried them out so far- what are the NES games like?

From what my friends have been saying there's very noticeable input lag, so I'm curious if you guys can corroborate that or not.

Why keep the motion controls when you can strip them and instantly make Skyward Sword infinitely better?

[up]x3 That's cool.

[up][up]I tried it with my wired controller, the joycons separate, and the Joycons on that rail thing and didn't notice any significant input lag on Mario Brothers 1 or 3, but than I'm hardly an expert.

Getting rid of Skyward Sword's motion controls would substantially change the game.

Besides, the motion controls weren't inherently the problem with Skyward. The problem is that they decided to turn half the enemies into a drawn-out "attack from the correct angle" minigame. Make the enemies less defensive and I think 90% of the complaints about motion controls will go away.

(Although I don't understand why they decided to do gyro aiming for projectile weapons when the Wii had a perfectly good IR sensor that worked wonderfully for every other point-and-shoot game on the system, but whatever.)

[up] Some people hate motion controls simply for existing for whatever reason. I don't get it but I don't really have to.

Some just don't like motion controls in general. Between Nintendo using every excuse to shoehorn them in (even if they work out ok) and 3rd parties doing a shit job at it, motion controls became a gimmick that overstayed its welcome. I got sick of the motion controls for the Ultra Space travel in Pokemon Ultra Sun and only by reading up on the game directly on this site did I learn that you can change the controls for it.

I honestly didn't mind the motion controls that much, although yeah, some enemies were obnoxious because you know what to do to beat them, but you have to wait for them to move to the right stance for it.

Also I totally forgot that the update was dropping. I'll have to download that tomorrow.

The combat issue in Skyward Sword reminds me of a similar problem in Return of Samus; enemies are very beefy, even when you get endgame weapons, because the devs really REALLY want you to use the counter system on them. So unless you can run past them, every enemy encounter is a slogfest.

I never really saw that problem with Return of Samus. Enemies generally go for their counter-inducing attacks as a first resort, and normal enemies just die to one charge shot when they're opened up.

It still kind of breaks the flow when compared to other Metroid games where you can just blast through pretty quickly.

I disagree, actually. From what I remember of ROS, almost no regular enemies took multiple charge shots after a counter from midgame onwards. I recall more enemies in Super, Zero Mission, and Fusion being hardier than that. Then again, I haven't freshly played any of these games, so my memory might be skewed, but my collective lasting impression of the 2D Metroids is that combat in ROS was much less methodical than the rest.

Speaking of Zero Mission and Fusion, I don't have a way to play GBA games anymore. It would be nice to get some HD ports of GBA games for the Switch - the Metroids for sure, but also the Golden Suns, Zelda Minish Cap, the FF Advanced series, and so on.

@Steven: Motion controls were also the main reason why Sonic Free Riders flopped. SEGA literally made it so that people absomother-BLEEP-inglutely had to use the Kinect and it actually made some people nauseous.

So GameXplain found an interesting trick regarding the Nintendo Switch Online NES games.

If you have a Japanese account on your Switch, you can download the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online and play Famicom versions of the NES games, which have substantial differences like a harder version of Super Mario Bros. 3 or a Zelda 1 with a more expansive soundtrack.

And since I'm here, I might as well ask, what's up with Toad lately?
