It's also possible they do minor adjustments to the dialogue after learning that this season is the last, to make it feel more like a finale.

Considering that there was apparently a Thing with Beakley this season, this may well be a case of adjusted dialogue for her to give her arc more closure.

The show got a GLAAD nomination (which is about recognizing LGBTQ content in media). It's for the season 3 premiere.

Oh, the gay parents that got like one mention and a background shot. Yay...

It's a nomination, tho. I think shows that were willing to be more open about LGBT content in general are being nominated, that said Ducktales has done far more LGBT content than most duck media before (without making fun of LGBT people) IIRC

Penumbra being lesbian also counts as LGBT too.

Still not impressed. Show me an actual gay couple who aren't background characters and get actual dialogue, and then Ducktales deserves an award. No earlier.

[up] No one told you to be impressed, you're taking a nomination that is facing competition from actual LGBT-focused cartoons way too personally, honestly

Let's be honest, it's a wonder they've even gotten that far yet in a Donald Duck-themed mainstream series aimed at children, of all things. Did anyone ever expect this'd be a fast proccess?

Something like this is much more easily done with an all new IP.

They're not going to win, that's a given considering how the other cartoons have LGBT themes far more focused on than Ducktales (which is more of using it for one episode as one character's trait and as a normalized background deal). I honestly don't see the big deal in a nomination considering that nomination = / = awarded

[up][up][up] You talk like Ducktales getting nominated for an award is a bad thing.

It's not a bad thing, but I misinterpreted it as getting the award.

It'd be a bad thing if it had taken a nomination slot from a work that did more of a representative effort, but I have to assume that wasn't the case here.

What other shows are being nominated in the same category?

[up]In Ducktales' competing category it is: Clifford the Big Red Dog 2020, Fancy Nancy, Not Too Late Elmo Show, and Summer Camp Island. https://tvline.com/2021/01/28/glaad-media-awards-nominations-2021-full-list-tv-nominees/

It's odd that Ducktales is categorised as "children's programming", whereas Steven Universe, The Owl House, She-Ra, Kipo etc. are categorised as "kids & family programming". This way Ducktales actually has a chance of winning, as it's not running against shows with actual gay content (though I don't watch any of the four shows it's running against, so I can't tell for sure).

Of the 4 other shows, 3 of them are for preschoolers (Clifford, Fancy Nancy, and The Not Too Late Show With Elmo). One of the characters in Clifford has 2 moms, but the only appeared in like 1-2 episodes. Fancy Nancy doesn't have any LGBT characters, but the nomination is for the short called "Nancy's Dress Up", with Nancy, her cousin Jonathan, and her friend Lionel all wearing feminine clothing (like ballet outfits). As for Elmo, there was that one episode with Jonathan Van Ness. As for Summer Camp Island, I think one of the characters has two dads. Summer Camp Island and Duck Tales are the only non-preschool shows in that category.

So it's unearned and humiliating if they win? grin

Though arguably it would be worse if they lost to Elmo and his ilk.

Maybe the distinction between "children's programming" and "kids and family programming" was actually based on the extent of LGBTQ representation? "Children's programming" only has a few minor LGBTQ characters or other forms of representation, whereas "kids and family programming" has at least one major gay character?

I doubt the distinction is made based on LGBT representation. But I don't know what else it would be. This show doesn't exactly scream kids only. Quite the contrary, actually.

It's worth mentioning that the American rating system has changed its meaning towards ratings over the years when it comes to what material is put in kids shows that's audience appropriate. The original Duck Tales series was rated TV-Y back when the rating meant "appropriate for all ages". Over the years, the TV-Y rating changed to be seen as for preschoolers. The current 2017 series is rated TV-Y7 like all non preschool shows involving the classic characters, meaning at least more of a chance to be somewhat open with LGBT content. Though I want to bring up Samantha King's tweet again.

So does anyone want to go through the other nominees to see what Penumbra and Violent's dads are up against?
