That's what I've always said about Islamophobia in North America, go back about a hundred years, and people said the exact same things (foreign religion, too many children/they'll outbreed us, inherently violent, leach off the system, you name it) about Irish Catholics. Bigots aren't known for original rhetoric.

It's a bit shocking that the Irish get that reputation for violence when it's the English that opressed them with an iron fist for centuries, and in really spectacular, over-the-top, cartoonishly villainous manners, too.

Like, currently, my mental construct of the kind of person who has been running England for the past few centuries is a jovial homicidal maniac shouting things like "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR! UNLESS HE'S TURKISH, IN WHICH CASE KILL THE BASTARD!"

But violence in English culture (and their relative ability to breed as much as anyone else) is a bit off-topic, I suppose.

Well, to be fair, the Turks have spent a good deal of their time waging wars of conquest against Europe and later in the medieval equivalent of a cold war (which occasionally flared into bloody skirmishes).

... Then again, the English were nowhere near the European border with the Ottoman Empire, and were far enough that the Ottoman Navy could not hope to pose anything remotely close to being a threat to them.

Yeah race is a silly and arbitrary social construct, and because Islam is tied to race in the minds of many (in America) they often have silly and arbitrary views of what makes someone a Muslim.

As a white ex-Muslim whenever I revealed my faith to others they always reacted the same way like clockwork.

1) Wait you're a Muslim?

2) Then someone else inevitability points out the obvious that Islam isn't connected to race.

3) The first questioner sheepishly accepts it.

Rinse and Repeat forever.

Wait, Turks are not white? We are talking the same WW 2 ideas of how there "types of whites"?

Here in Latin America, we just think of Americans, europeans and euroasians as "white" (our beautiful white overlords, the only ones that can save us from ourselves...yeah, Latin America had some self loathing issues).

White like all racial classifications is a social construct, and as such Turks are white depending on the society and the racial constructs it employs.

I mean, there physical differences between human comunities, so the concept of race still had value.

The issue is when people treat race as if actually mattered in a intellectual way. The classic "black people is more violent" myth.

Yeah, that about sums it up. We should have a thread to discuss grudging admiration of white people, colorism, only respecting degrees that come from Europe or the US, all that trash that we choke on daily.

Yeah, It could be good. What about "White worship and other internalizated racism". It could be a good name?

But every racist that I have met considerate the turks white (of course, is also for the white worship in Latin america, the popularity to turkish soap operas in Peru is causing some serious damage, not because the soap operas themselves, but because it helps to the idea that people with white skin is "more civilizated")

I’m pretty sure that the early US had some people arguing that Italians, Greeks, Iberians and even the French weren’t white, so yeah it’s a social construct.
