Big Things Happening on TV Tropes

Go To

Here we go!!! After more than ten very productive years, Fast Eddie is stepping down as the administrator of TV Tropes. To Fast Eddie – Thank You! And on behalf of all of us here, cheers to a happy retirement.

Without further ado, the new Administrators are myself (drewski) and my good friend itcdr. We are youngerish TV addicts, movie lovers, gamers, web developers, and entertainment junkies with a ton of passion for the TV Tropes project and one general goal – to make this site insanely awesome!

So, what does this mean for the community and site?

  • Wiki policy: No policies are being changed. We share the values and commitment to an open, informal, breezy and fun wiki.

  • Forum policy: No changes.

  • The staff: The mods are staying as they are, including keeping all their current powers and authority. We will continue to work with the Mods and the Troper base as always.

  • The tech wish list and site development: Coding will no longer be a one-man labour of love, so more headway can be made on fixing bugs, developing new features, and generally polishing the wiki. This may take a little time to get going as we dig through several hundred thousand lines of code…thanks for that Fast Eddie…but we will get there!

Also, if you haven’t already seen the announcement - which is probably impossible - we launched a campaign on Kickstarter to accelerate new developments on TV Tropes. Check out the campaign - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tvtropes/the-tv-tropes-revitalization-project - to learn more about our plans and how you can contribute - and see the awesome rewards for your help.

Please share your questions, comments, concerns and love below.

Remember the messages we got at the top of a YMMV item telling us where to post them as well as where not to post them?

This index gets it right, and then randomly lists examples that DON'T have the warning.

YMMV flags won't work unless every appropriate warning unanimously agrees where YMMV is supposed to go. We can't have a bunch of dud instructions that leave new tropes in the dark about what to do.

You are talking about the various banners, such as the one on Abandon Shipping?

[up] Yes. One of the things I'm wondering is why they aren't consistent, even when they're about the same type of thing.

I just got a video ad, with sound, and had to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to kill it.

Excuse me sir, what on the name of this ungodly earth has been done to the site design?

I am not sure who thought this new design was a good idea. There is now a fat ugly bar on the right everywhere I go, and the actual page content is now left-justified in the worst sort of way. It feels horridly asymmetrical and compressed. My head is hurting just from looking at it. I cannot enjoy browsing TV Tropes when it is like this.

It is the single worst change I have ever encountered on any site, ever.

Sorry but I have to agree with the guys above, the ugly bars on the sides are just horrible and it honestly make my head hurt :(

I don't see what the point of these bars are, and since most tropers agree it isn't asthetically pleasing I think reverting this change should be considered.

Love the new page design. Looks so much cleaner and organized.

I can get behind this.

This is just terrible. What is with all this crap on the right? Why do we need a "trope of the day"? What the hell is Howland Illustration? And why would you remove the word "random" from the random page buttons?

Seriously, why would you ever think this is a good layout.

They changed the layout, now it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks!

And believe me when I say that was not sarcasm.

I agree that the "random buttons" should have the word random on them.

In addition, I am getting far more autoplaying video ads than before.

The wide load thing makes things better, but I still don't understand the need for this incredibly large bar on the right. Most of what is there is completely useless to me, and what is useful takes up more much more space that it needs to. I also liked it better on the left.

[up]There is work in progress on creating an option to both switch the toolbar back to the left and shrink its size.
