We knew this from the beginning, though I wouldn't really say it's "not a spin-off".

It pitched itself as a prequel series focusing on Velma, ever the skeptic, developing her mystery solving skills and interest while dealing a murder before Mystery Inc became a thing.

In a past interview with former WarnerMedia YA CEO Tom Ashiesm, he stated that other members of the gang would appear, but Scooby and the van won't (for now).

Additionally, we have some new developments:
Hi guys! Great to hear your voices. Like you, Charlie Grandy and the writers LOVE Velma (as do I!). She’s a brilliant teen and leader. The situations she’s in aren’t horrible, we promise! They’re legit scary mystery stories where she’s the protagonist! She’s funny and real teen.

And her past isn’t troubled it’s sPooOoKyyy! We are so psyched about her and can’t wait to talk to real deal Scooby fans like you closer to release. Is it more adult, but real to authentic high school life? YES! That’s why is fun! But also why it is worth doing. We got you.

On the topic of Scooby shows that barely have anything to do with actual Scooby, this has also been announced.

We have another upcoming Scooby-Doo spin-off, this time aimed at the Cartoonito crowd for Cartoon Network and HBO Max: https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image002_1_2.jpg

Synopsis: As counselors at a lakeside sleepaway camp, Scooby and Shaggy don’t know much about canoes and archery, but they do know how to solve a mystery! In a summer filled with nature hikes, rafting trips and fireside ghost stories, the goofy, good-hearted and can-do duo will share their love for chasing clues with three young camper pups destined to become their own preschool version of Mystery Incorporated.

Featuring mysteries that will be more kooky than spooky, Scooby Doo! And the Mystery Pups teaches preschoolers about curiosity and the joy of discovery. The show will encourage the audience to solve clues alongside the collaborative trio of pups, exemplifying how much can be accomplished with friends by your side.

The series will join the Cartoonito preschool block in 2024.

“This show combines everything we love about Scooby — his humor, his loyal friendship with Shaggy, his mystery-loving spirit — all in an innovative and accessible format for preschoolers,” Amy Friedman, Head of Kids & Family Programming, Warner Bros. “Cartoonito parents and caregivers will get to introduce kids to their beloved childhood hero in a totally new way.”

Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, added: “We are thrilled to finally give preschoolers a version of Scooby to call their own. With plenty of laughs, fun, and clues to chase, this show promises to entertain the youngest of mystery solvers.”

Scooby-Doo veteran voices Frank Welker and Matthew Lillard will lead the cast, playing Scooby and Shaggy, respectively. Mark Palmer (Hello Ninja, Treehouse Detectives) serves as co-executive producer and showrunner with Erik Knutsen as supervising producer. Sam Register also serves as executive producer.

Obviously this concept mirrors shows like Puppy Dog Pals and PAW Patrol, but I also remembered What's New, Scooby-Doo? introduced the Secret Six pups with a similar premise. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the loose inspiration here.

This is yet another spin-off having Shaggy and Scooby being the returning Mystery Inc members, so there's that.

And it's really only picked up speed in the last 20 years or so. I mean, until the mid-90's there was a new Scooby series every couple of years or so, and most of the older ones aired somewhere in reruns, but they've really been pushing Scooby hard since WB acquired HB. Now, he gets at least 2 animated DTV movies a year and a new series every 2 years, seems like.

It started with the Zombie Island/Witches Ghost /Alien Invaders /Cyber-Chase quadrology, then we got What's New Scooby Doo, and after that, things just exploded.

Pup named Scooby was the first Scooby show I ever saw back when it was on cartoon network. Never got boomerang but plan to someday check out the Scooby shows on HBO max.

So which Scooby show's gonna be worse now: the preschool oriented one or the Velma spin off?

For me, when's the next DTV coming given it's all we have for classic Scooby now.

If I recall:

  • There's a Krypto the Superdog crossover DTV film in development, that was leaked with the Courage crossover listing.

  • There's also a prequel SCOOB! film for HBO Max called "SCOOB!: Holiday Hunt", which seems the preteen Mystery Inc solve a Christmas mystery.

  • There's another Halloween project known as "Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo" that was leaked by Snipple Animation.

Also, we just had an anniversary special on The CW, the aforementioned Courage crossover, two comic book runs, and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? was not too long ago. We're not exactly starved of traditional Scooby content.

On balance, it seems like a lot of animated projects these days are either aimed at preschoolers or are very adult. That might just be my imagination.

The Scooby franchise really has a really BROAD spectrum of fans. It’s like the Batman franchise.

[up]X2: That's moreso a recency bias of being aware of more projects aimed at either audiences, and maybe lumping or ignoring current/upcoming works aimed at pre-teens.

[up] Pretty much this. Plus the franchise is no stranger to experimentation.

... I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be dog biscuits, but people have been making the "edibles" joke since about the 70s.

Some adaptations have also leaned into the joke that Shaggy is a stoner who smokes pot.

And considering how they treat Scooby Snacks, it is really easy to make that joke.

I recall finding all the adult observations on Scooby-Doo funny when I first encountered them, like, 35 years ago. I suspect they're still funny to folks just getting to an age when they'd start noticing themselves.

I recall that Iwao Takamoto was pretty adamant that Shaggy was not a stoner, and that wasn't a joke that he ever intended (though he agreed that Fred and Daphne might have been sneaking off to make out).

Yeah, it never once occurred to me that Scooby Snacks were interpreted in some circles as a reference to drugs. (He said while also remembering that "Groovy Treats" from The Venture Bros. were literally drugs.)

So all this talk about it kinda makes me react with that expression where your face just morphs into one of shock because it's just now dawning on you. IYKYK.

Incidentally, since I mentioned Venture Bros., anyone think it's pretty funny how Patrick Warburton (Brock Samson in VB) was in a show that was lampooning Scooby-Doo only to end up in an actual Scooby-Doo show later on?

I have always thought of Scooby Snacks as bone-shaped graham crackers thanks entirely to the actual Scooby Snacks sold in real stores.

[up] They rebranded some Vanilla Wafers as Scooby Snacks for awhile, too.

But yeah, I think the idea was always that they were dog treats, and it was supposed to be weird and funny that Shaggy liked them so much.

As a kid, I once ate a dog biscuit on a dare (I was, like, 9). They, or at least the one I had, didn't really taste like anything. It was mostly just crunchy.

Some adaptations have also leaned into the joke that Shaggy is a stoner who smokes pot.

Really just the first live action movie, tbh. That was the thing about that film: it was ultimately based more on fandom jokes and memes about the series than it was an adaptation of the series itself.

Worth noting is that Stoner Shaggy is the one "mature" HB fan theory that Harvey Birdman flat-out said wasn't true. Even they're sick of it.
