Tekken 7

Really happy Ganryu is back. Even if his personality is obnoxious/abrasive, his sumo style is actually a lot of fun. Surprisingly fast and tricky at times, and hard hitting too. One of my favorite moves to do in 6/Tag 2 was a jump into his sumo sit and then into the sumo roll. Just hilarious. His outfit is the same overloaded, inharmonious junk that plagues Hwoarang and a couple other T7 redesigns though. Woof.

Fahkumram confuses me. Why this guy? Josie is already in the game, and Bruce exists, so why create another kickboxer? Just looks like a tatted up Sagat, including the weird Street Fighter-esque exaggerated proportions.

Ah well, I was hoping against hope for one of the Roger characters. That's probably the most unique style that isn't repped by anyone in Tekken 7 at this point, and I've always enjoyed using it.

Here's hoping for a Season 4, I guess. :\

They did reveal him in Bangkok. I think they did something similar with Shaheen somewhere in the Middle East?

Though even there the crowd didn't seem all that enthusiastic.

There are differences between Muay Thai and Kickboxing, then looking at how many entries Bruce has missed, how many of his moves got passed on to other characters and how the only time people cared to play as him more often was during Tekken 5, it is pretty safe to say he is not a priority in roster decisions, and unlike a similar unpopular character, Ganryu, he doesn't have Harada himself being a fan of his.

Whelp, I guess I'm just not gonna be a fan of Leeroy in general. At least his combo videos are gonna great. I always love watching parry montage with Jin so I can imagine Leeroy's will be even better.

Poor Bruce, this new guy just basically took all his chance to return. Unless they really revamp the guy, but he was never the most exciting guy unless he was with Kazuya & even then he didn't stand out all that much.

Only 7 in recent times. 3 and 4 before, but a lot of characters missed those. 3 was a big roster overhaul, and 4 is one of the smallest rosters in the series. He'd been back on the train since Tekken 5, along with most of the current Tekken 7 roster (Roger Jr., Wang, and Baek are the only other style omissions from T5DR, not counting the offline-restricted Jinpachi).

As I understand it, Gigas got some Marduk moves, but he came back. King got some Armor King moves, but he came back. I think there may be some other examples as well, but it's been a while.

I don't know of any public usage stats (you could estimate based on tournament entrants, but a lot of that is determined by tier, as Bob demonstrated in Tekken 6), but—anecdotally—he was far from the least common character I'd see online in 6 or Tag 2, and I've noticed a fair number of folks advocating for his return, dissatisfied with Josie.

While it's nice that the Tekken team appears to be trying to represent more nationalities within the roster, I think it's shitty for the fans of Bruce for them to reintroduce a Muay Thai practitioner but then invent a whole other character to use it instead of the guy who has been using it since Tekken 2.

The Thai crowd also seemed extremely excited to see him come back, and that calmed down once his replacement was revealed to be the character, instead.

Not sure if it's just Leroy's coolness eclipsing everything else but I honestly couldn't care less about Ganryu or Fahkumram.

watches Leeroy's vid solo... lol anna, katrina and Chloe as the dancing girls... and chloe actually has a decent none catgirl costume!

They should have led with this character.

Feel like I'm the only one who likes Fahkumram. :V Kinda wish he actually was 10 feet tall in gameplay, though, but there's probably some kind of technical concern there.

I know people have been saying that he's too similar to Bruce because they're both Muay Thai fighters, but I dunno... to me, Bruce was all about speedy charging flying knees, whereas this guy appears to be more about range and technical shenanigans. I hope he has cool throws, though. For me the best part of Tekken are the throws. :V

They do tend to put a lot of love into the throw animations.

I think there's room for both Bruce and Fahkumram in any case. We have at least 3 different Mishima Karate fighters in any given game, sometimes even more than that, and Tekken's been extremely good at diverging its characters movesets over time.

Yea, I'm still ok with that. I don't think Tekken should ever take itself too seriously.

I've been seeing people responding very well Fahkumram's revelation. I'm not crazy about him, but if you ask me I think he looks better than Bruce & so far I like him more Leeroy.

Speaking of which, why did it take so long to have a Wing Chun fighter in any fighting games?

I guess it just wasn't on the development team's radar. I don't think Wing Chun is a fighting style that appears often in fighting games.

Yea, that's why it's so weird that Leeroy is (more or less) the 1st Wing Chun fighter.

I guess some people didn't think it was all that different Shaolin Fist or something. IDK my martial arts.

Heihachi returns as Cyber-Mishima in Tekken 8.

If you wanna get technical, Wing Chun was one of the styles 'represented' in Mortal Kombat: Deception and Armageddon, except it was very much In Name Only since it, like all the other styles, was just some random stance that doesn't match up with the actual fighting style, and I wouldn't be surprised if the stance itself had nothing to do with Wing Chun and they just slapped the name on because it sounds 'authentic'. You know how it is with late 3D-era MK. :V
