If anything I think having Sonic in theaters at the same time as Birds had no effect or maybe even helped, as I definitely noticed much greater attendance during Birds’s second week. Maybe there are more parents watching BoP while dropping off their kids at Sonic.

[up]I would personally assume that's more likely because of good word of mouth.

That and, well, holiday weekend. I'd imagine a lot of people skipped opening weekend in favor of saving their money for a holiday weekend. Plus the above good word of mouth.

I shudder to think what Tom Rothman would've done with this film had it stayed at Sony.

[up]Rothman was in charge during the Ghostbusters (2016) debacle, right? Guy was famous for penny pinching and trying to portray fan complaints under the harshest light possible.

Rothman would have made Sonic go mute, fire laser beams from his eyes, teleport, and killed Robotnik.

[up]x6 I mean, I didn't say anything that was wrong? A road trip movie with a character who's super power is 'I can run so fast that time is basically frozen' is kind of a dumb idea. To exemplify, replace Sonic with The Flash and see how that works out. I'm not asking much for a script to be coherent and if it's a standard that a script writing student would be held to, it's not unreasonable to hold an actual Hollywood Production to the same level.

This is a bad movie and exemplifies a lot of Hollywood's laziness over the last decade.

If you like the movie, fine. Go right ahead. There are plenty of movies that I genuinely love, but I can also admit that they're pretty bad. I adore Clue and it's my go to feel-good-movie when I'm having a bad day, but I will happily admit that all of the characters are paper thin with no depth and that's a fair criticism. I enjoyed watching Jurassic World, but oh boy does that film have a ton of really major issues if you think about it for longer than a second and a lot of particularly sexist ones too.

It only hit me recently in a thread that everything ever criticized these days has a fandom these days and will defend their thing as an exception to the criticism. If I criticize gay representation as a bunch of stereotypes who are clothing and make-up obsessed, speak with effeminate tones and lisps, never have their own stories/depth, and cite some examples, people who are fans of that example while rally to justify why that criticism isn't fair or the character is great anyway. Which, fine, it's ok to like a character. But that character is still emblematic of a larger problem? That it's a larger systemic issue that is bigger than that one character you like?

Look, you had fun with sonic. You liked it. It was a lot better than the dumpster fire that original design had you think it'd be (which occurs to me as a strange Fandom-Product 'Censor Decoy', if probably unintentional). But that doesn't mean the film isn't lazy and dumb and full of major problems that have plagued a lot of big budget movies for the last decade.

Problems that I'm frankly sick of so, yeah, I'm not going to pull my punches when I see them weather I like the film or not. Hollywood has a lot of problems with lazy and unearned scripts, major writing issues any draft or edit process would catch, and utter lack of development or lack of understanding of the things they're adapting. I love Harry Potter, but Crimes of Grindewald and Cursed Child are utter garbage and I will stand by that.

This movie actually opens up lots of interesting possibilities for the sequel. Here's what I want to see happen in the sequel:

Tails comes to Sonic's world to tell him that Dr. Robotnik has taken over Sonic's home planet and that Sonic needs to stop him. Sonic at first doesn't want to help because he wants to stay on Earth with Tom and Maddie and he doesn't want the pressure of trying to save the world since he's still trying to understand his powers. But then, he and Tails start bonding with each other throughout the movie. Meanwhile on Sonic's home planet, Dr. Robotnik manages to trick the Echidna clan into thinking that Sonic is a threat to them and he starts building a ship to get him back to Earth to take it over. The Echidna clan then sends Knuckles to Earth and he and Sonic started fighting each other. Later on, either Dr. Robotnik or Knuckles kidnaps Tails and take him to Sonic's world, forcing Sonic to go to his world to get Tails back. Meanwhile, Tom and Maddie decided to go to Sonic's home world to find Sonic and that's what I got so far.

Now, these are just some suggestions I have for the plot for the sequel and I doubt that Paramount would go along with this plot, but hopefully the sequel will have a better storyline for Sonic that would help progress his character a bit more.

[up]That plot looks nice but a) How does Robotnik get to Sonic's world? And b) What does he do to Tails when he kidnaps him? Hold him for ransom? Torture him for info on Sonic? (Which as I've said before would have to be toned down to meet PG standards)

Anywho, one under-discussed topic about the movie's success is how it could pertain to a new Sonic cartoon. Sega has been pretty vocal about wanting to do a new cartoon (since Sonic Boom is pretty much cancelled) and Paramount sister network Nickelodeon (who's been advertising the movie like crazy) will almost certainly want a piece of the pie. It's all but inevitable that future non-comic/non-game Sonic media will involve a Viacom-owned entity somehow.

Hmmm... I never thought about Sega wanting to do another Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. I wonder since the movie was so successful, would they want to do a TV series about the movie? It's a bit too soon to tell where this movie universe is going depending on how successful the sequels are. But I bet that Nickelodeon would want to make a Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon since they have been making cartoons about "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" since the first movie was released (despite the fact that the sequel "Out of the Shadows" underperformed).

[up]In an ideal scenario it would take place entirely in Sonic's world, with Robotnik being the only human character (and retaining much of Carrey's personality, though not voiced by Carrey) and blending various elements of all previous Sonic works into one, kinda like the TMNT 2012 cartoon.

It would amazing to see Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts back after so many years (and voiced by their original voice actors to boot) for at least one episode, but sadly I don't think Sega would allow those characters to be used.

"I mean, I didn't say anything that was wrong?"

Its called Opinion Myopia. You're trying to use your opinion to justify criticisms and saying they are right. But there's no objectivity here, all I see is an opinion, and trying to say its the only correct way to view the movie is dumb.

And anything else you've disagreed about with people on here in the past.

I also haven't seen the movie, and plan to, whether in theaters, or home video, but you really need to get off your high horse, and accept that people will disagree with you.

Oh and by the way, if Nickelodeon starts making Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons, then would this mean that Cartoon Network would no longer be making the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons? Sonic Boom aired on Cartoon Network, so would this mean that Paramount would try to get the rights to Sonic the Hedgehog in terms of making TV shows from Cartoon Network?

[up]Cartoon Network didn't produce Sonic Boom. Sega did it in-house with help from Technicolor Animation and Lagardère Group, both from France, with CN only having broadcast rights (and their treatment of the series left much to be desired). As far as I know CN and Boomerang no longer air the series.

I'm fine with people disagreeing with me. I'm not ok with people writing criticisms off as "You're just a hater" or "You just are mad it's doing well". It's dismissive, it's annoying, and it's also rather ironic considering the whole "Get off your high horse and let people have other opinions" if you're going to just toss mine off as inauthentic and 'mad it's doing well'. That kind of nonsense can fuck right off.

And I'm 100% ok with good movies doing well. Don't care where they come from. If it's a good movie, fine. But sonic isn't a good movie.

Yes, there are opinions. There isn't objectivity. But that doesn't mean there aren't issues and very obvious problems with this script. And dismissing that legitimately explained criticism as "Well, I think it's perfect and you're just a hater" just shuts down any conversation.

You saying that the movie is bad and not giving good reasons as to why is also annoying.

The road trip plotline is overdone, yes, but at least here it's justified because Sonic has no idea of where he's going.

I was wondering that once the sequel gets announced, is it possible that it might face the same mistake that "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" had made with its sequel?

What I mean by this is that the "TMNT" sequel "Out of the Shadows" had tried to put in so much fanservice for the fans (featuring Bebop and Rocksteady and Krang from the 1980s series and adding in Casey Jones), but the story ended up being too cluttered and it failed at the box office as a result.

So, is it possible that the sequel to the Sonic movie might end up being cluttered in trying to fit in so many elements from the games or has Paramount learned their lesson since Ninja Turtles?
