While I did like the movie, some of the jokes did fall flat for me.
I groaned when he admits he was a "poorly disguised hedgehog" during his Dennis Hopper from Speed impersonation at the bar scene. There is a time for meta jokes and this was not one of them. It just takes me out of the movie. Luckily, it is followed by Sonic failing to break the bottle over the tough guy's head. "Watched too many action movies" indeed.
I also felt the same way when Tom stops being sarcastic about Barbados and admits he is watching traffic and Wade wonders how he got back to Montana in a few seconds. That makes the latter come off as way too stupid, even for a Barney Fife-like comic relief deputy. In the rest of film, he never comes off as that idiotic again, just naive.

I was looking on Youtube for the Sonic trailer set to Gangster's Paradise and stumbled across this Sonic AMV which is set to Gangster's Paradise... and was made in 2007.
The comments are quite the goldmine too:

Typically, once a sequel thread exists, divergent conversations will take place until eventually one of the threads dies off organically.
I see no reason not to allow that to happen here. I don't think trying to artificially confine the conversation to one thread matters overmuch.
