Beyond Discworld, also oddly reminds me of the Magical Diary game — "Spells are classified into five colors; make sure you've got a broad palette!"

Regardless, expressing tentative interest.

I'm interested.

I'm considering a character with no ability to use magic and is, instead, forced to use their wits and skill to survive. Basically, I'm thinking of playing Tavi from Codex Alera, when it comes to the central premise of the character.

Been a while since I saw you around, sunny.

  • Name: Glen Niteray
  • Race: Human / Geig
  • Gender: male
  • Personality: Glen is a rather odd individual; he seems rather unused to the world as it is, and does not know about the wondrous devices and such present. This hints that he's been amnesiac for a little while; he only remembers stirring awake and then going on with his life. Glen is an extremely friendly sort, though a little bit of a doormat. Chances are, if you approach him, he'll happily help you out. While he is a doormat to his friends, it is evident in his behaviors that the same does not extend to everyone - once he gets his mind on doing something, he'll never give up on it. One of these things he's put his mind to is finding out his identity. He might play at being an Idiot Hero, but its evident there's more to him than that. Much of it is simplicity in the course of action, not actual stupidity - he's just likely to take the simplest course of action. He also has a tendency to be a bit more smart alecky in his head than when he's speaking.
  • Appearance: He looks pretty intimidating for someone that friendly - he resembles a Black Knight, clad in heavy black armor with blue and red tinges, a wide shouldered, muscular form under the armor, and a number of scars on him he doesn't remember obtaining. His face, however, shows his nature - he's actually rather pretty for such a big guy, though not to an exaggerated degree. He has somewhat disorganized black hair and bright blue eyes. He always has his sword on hand, this being a BFS, though again not one so large to be impractical, more in the vein of a Scottish Claymore, though with some stylistic choices evident.
  • Magic Color: Black; his specialty seems to be more in the Deathly direction than raising the dead. There's also Power at a Price in some of his spells.
  • Bio: Glen is an amnesiac Geig - this being a sort of super-empowered magical soldier, the creation of these being very highly frowned upon. Glen himself was created by a singularly powerful Necromancer. The process resulted in Glen losing his memories of his human life, and then, somehow, Glen The Geig lost his memories, resulting in his awakening in a lodging facility. He does not know who or what he truly is aside from his name, and doesn't understand his magic very well at all.
  • Anything Else?: The most identifying factor about a Geig is its glowing red eyes, hence why he can simply pass as a knight or warrior wearing black armor.

Might as well stick what I've got so far here for safe-keeping.

Name: A'idah

Race: Sand Giant

Gender: Female

Personality: A’idah tends to be a bit of a Silent Bob, at least upon first meeting, preferring to let everyone else talk and use her actions should input be required. She has quite a stubborn streak and fiercely loyal to those she considers her friends, very selfless in her defence of them. While generally friendly and helpful the giantess tends to be a little distrusting of strangers until they prove they can be trusted. A’idah adores new technologies and is very curious of the world around her in her own discrete way.

Appearance: Like most of her people A’idah has dark olive skin with light freckling from the sun and jet black hair, almost crew-cut short except for a swept fringe at the front. Her features are somewhat sharp but her kind black eyes and perpetual smile gives her a warm and friendly air despite her naturally imposing stature. As a Sand Giant A’idah stands at approximately ten feet tall, smaller than other species of Giant but impressive by most standards nonetheless. Needless to say, she never wears skirts around human cities instead wearing simple workman’s clothes, improbably large boots and a patchy leather apron. When travelling she often keeps a Great Sword at her side, able to hold it one handed with ease. She has a few long scars down her back in a semi-crisscross pattern and under her fringe a circular symbol has been branded. A’idah’s body is in proportion to her height if a bit lanky and with unusually long fingers, toes and limbs. She has an athletic, muscled build and like all giants possesses superhuman strength.

Magic Color: Grey

Bio: Up until recently A'idah lived in her clan's settlement on the arid plains, a promising student of earth and metal magic. She had always been a strange child amongst the pragmatic, ritualistic Sand Giants and time did not temper this. While magic was a trusted and respected tool few of the giants experimented with its uses and were not overly curious of outsiders. A'idah, however, was creative and would often stray from the settlement to find new objects of interest. She had little in common with her peers and became somewhat of a loner, even more so from her reluctance to observe the traditions of her people or their leader's advice.

However, learning magic required their leader's blessing and input, hence choosing to feign concern for such matters. A'idah was a hardworking student but much of her learning came from passing traders or her own experiments. A year ago she was banished in disgrace from her ancestral lands for reasons she has never discussed, not that most she meets realise she can even speak human languages. For the last 12 months the giantess has been using her magic and skills for various odd jobs, construction works and the occasional blacksmith.

Anything Else?: while A'idah once had a last name it was taken away when she was banished.

Actually, I had a better idea:

  • Name: Elise
  • Race: Automata.
  • Gender: Female.
  • Personality: Elise is cold and always acts calm. Whatever emotion she feels, she doesn't show it. She doesn't much know how to interact with people, but she gets lonely easily. She loves kids, though, and will often stop to play with them, even if she has other things to do. She is aimless and purposeless, feeling lost and alone. Anyone who treats her like a friend, she'll latch onto immediately.
  • Appearance: A picture is worth a thousand words. She sometimes wears clothes, usually when she doesn't want anyone to know she's a mere automata, but she doesn't have to.
  • Magic Color: Yellow.
  • Bio: Elise was made by a toymaker. He hadn't intended to create something alive. He just grabbed the wrong device, used a stored Green charge he had intended for a different toy, a toy he had planned as his magnum opus, in a wand-like device intended to animate a plant so that it could take care of children as they played with their toys instead of his Silver wand, and something strange had happened. What he had intended to be a toy doll that could perform some pre-programmed action, powered by Yellow magic instead got infused with Green magic. It was something that really shouldn't have been able to have happen. Realizing his mistake, though not realizing the consequences of it, he tried to use the right wand, but it didn't work. She didn't function as she should of. The magic just didn't work with her body the way he had cast it. But, on the inside, the Green magic her maker accidentally released was breathing life into her. Not motion, though. Just consciousness. Distraught at his failure and his wasting of his Green charge, he tossed her away to join his failed creations, and, in the process, her top and bottom popped apart.

There in his workshop she stayed. He forgot about her, like he did the rest of her failures. But she was awake. Aware. She could see, think, and feel, but not move. Decades past, and more and more junk was tossed back their. Her creator grew old and died. Her creator's son abandoned the workshop where she still lay. She was bored. Lonely. Until, one day, a rat that had found its way into the workshop knocked a pile of stuff over, and a tattered Silver wand her creator had kept as a spare fell on the bench she was stored on and rolled over until it touched her. There was a zap, and she jolted up. Finally, she could move. She reached down, and picked up the wand. A charge went through her, and she felt electricity crackle over her skin and a connection to her disconnected body. She was able to rise and stand and look around. She was dusty, as was the workshop, and it was dark. Carefully, she walked to the door, and looked outside. It was night time and the moon was high in the sky. With that, she left the shop, no looking back.
  • Anything Else?: She needs to make contact with a Silver wand about once every 48 hours to continue moving. After 48 hours, she begins to slow, and loses her ability to move entirely within 24 hours.

Comic relief Necromancer, GO!Also

  • Name: Veneficus
  • Race: Human
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: Veneficus isn't terribly smart or sane, he believes that he has been prophesized to overthrow the Kingdom of Fife (which probably doesn't exist) with a mighty army of the undead (so far he has a skeleton). Other than that, Veneficus is relatively harmless and goes out of his way to make sure that his undead companion doesn't scare innocent bystanders too much. Veneficus fancies himself as a force to be reckoned with, when in reality he's just a guy with some dark robes and the ability to raise fairly harmless creatures from the dead.
  • Appearance: Some men just want to take over the world with an army of the undead, is that too much to ask? Veneficus always keeps his hood up, he thinks it makes him look mysterious.
  • Magic Color: Black. Veneficus likes the idea of raising interesting creatures from the dead, though he's only managed to raise a skeleton so far.
  • Bio: Veneficus was a force to be reckoned with years ago, raising entire armies without breaking a sweat. But ever since he got knocked on the head a few decades back and lost a good chunk of his memory, Veneficus has mostly been wandering around and trying to find the Kingdom of Fife. His search has been fruitless so far. In his travels, Veneficus managed to find a skeleton by the name of Gregory willing to be raised from the dead and wander around aimlessly alongside the Necromancer. Veneficus mainly gets by in life by temporarily raising people's friends and relatives from the dead so they can deal with their emotional baggage and get on with life (or death in the case of the raisee).

[up]That's fine! I'll start accepting things when I'm not in class.

EDIT: @deathpigeon: Sorry, but you'll need to rework that slightly. People with Yellow Magic wouldn't be able to tap into Green Magic. But I like the idea!

[up]Well, for the most part, it varies based on power level and personality. Someone who grew up reading high fantasy might summon a Griffon to aid them, or a troll. Someone with an interest in Tarot might summon a Chariot-riding warrior, pulled by two lions or could risk a spin on the Wheel Of Fortune.

[up][up]So he's basically the Dr. Doofenshmirtz of this RPG?

Anyway, here goes:

  • Name: Narak Tun
  • Race: Orc
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: Very against stereotype, he's basically a hippie, more officially a Druid. He generally dislikes violence although on the rare occasions he does lose his temper it's best to be out of the blast radius.
  • Appearance: 6'6", with grey-green hairless skin and the typical orcish features. Usually wears white robes with green trim at the hem and sleeves and carries a staff with which he's quite skilled when he has to be.
  • Magic Color: Green
  • Bio: Contrary to popular opinion not all orcs are bloodthirsty berserkers. Okay, to be far Narak's parents used to be. In fact they were so good at it they lived long enough to get tired of it and for a mutual admiration to turn to love. Sensing that their attitudes were not welcome in their tribe they left, looking for somewhere that would accept them. Which they found in a Druid sect in which they raised theiir children and in which Narak become not just a member but but a skilled magic user of the Green persuasion.

[up]Well, there are some Brown Magic Users who can summon, say, weaponry instead of creatures. And most creatures aren't the real thing, instead created from the sheer magical potential of their user. So whether they're summoning a mounted machine-gun or The Kraken, they're summoning a magical clone of it.

Here's my character. The backstory is kind of dark but hopefully that's OK.

  • Name: Avenir (Formerly Ambrose Wake)
  • Race: Human
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: Outwardly, Avenir is loud and boisterous, seeming confidant in his own abilities and wanting to entertain. He's prone to tricking people and hurling insults if he doesn't like them but is normally kind and will help people with no reward if he thinks they really need it. Inwardly, he has never got over his past and is still emotionally scarred, feeling like he can't trust anyone and considering himself somewhat weak and inferior, constantly afraid that he won't be powerful enough when a threat comes.
  • Appearance: Avenir is a fairly young human, in his early twenties, and is an average height for this. He is fairly thin but most of his body mass is muscle. His skin is a dark olive colour but is covered in burn wounds and scars over most of his body. His hair was once a dark brown but he cuts it off so there is normally little or none of it. His eyes are dark brown but the left is non-functional and has a long scar stretching either side of it. He normally wears a brown cloak with a large hood and gloves, covering most of his body and hiding his deformity on first glance.
  • Magic Color: Brown. His normal summons represent the major arcana of the tarot. He can normally only summon one at a time and has never managed more than three.
  • Bio: When he was a young child, his family was poor and his parents simple farmers, using magic to help their plants grow. One cold night, an injured man came to their house, saying that he had been ambushed and looking for shelter and healing. Ambrose's father, who used green magic, healed the man but during the night he let in a band of outlaws who he was really a member of, looting the place before setting fire to it. His parents tried to fight them off but failed, being only farmers against trained fighters and his mother was killed. Both he and his father survived but were heavily injured and close to death. As his last living act, his father managed to heal some of Ambrose's wounds, allowing him to live, albeit permanently scarred.

At first, the boy swore revenge and tried to find the men but as years went on he started to recognise that it was hopeless. He took a new name, Avenir and discarded his past life, setting out to find a new purpose. On his journeys, he was given a pack of cards when he won a bet against a mysterious old man and found a book which taught him how to use them. These were Tarot cards, cards which some superstitious people thought could tell the future if used right. He never believed that the cards could create prophecies but he became fond of them and started basing his summoning magic around them, learning to summon mystical creations based on the Major Arcana. With this power, he set out into the world, attempting to find excitement and adventure.

  • Anything Else?:
    • Damage to his scalp means that very little hair grows and he thinks it looks silly so he cuts this off.
    • He lost his left eye in a fight.
    • He has an accent that sounds French.

[up]Well, yes, there are ways to purchase temporary "Charges" of a type of magic. Theoretically, this toymaker could gain access to it. Of course, it's rather expensive. Though I suppose that could add a reason to why the Toymaker left your character alone for so long. He was saving it for his Magnum Opus, and "wasted" it on your character?
