That flag appears to be brown and white while the straight flag is black and white.

If it's not the straight flag, then what is it actually supposed to be?

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr

I checked it out, here there's at least 23 pride flags

And none of them have that specific combination of brown and white.

So either its a made-up combination or the brown is a washed out black.

Also the origins of the straight flag is pretty fucked up as expected, it was created to mock pride flags in general.

I want to believe that whoever drew that was unaware of the implications and was just trying to be inclusive.

The story is written by Devin Grayson, an infamously maligned writer who among other things had Nightwing raped by Tarantula and then tried to justify it saying it was just "non-consensual sex".......

Also that cape is getting absolutely shredded online, especially by queer people. It doesn't matter what the intentions are, it looks absolutely tacky and hideous.

[up]That's the guy who wrote that story? Yeesh. But he wouldn't have drawn the cape, right? Unless he specifically asked the artist to put it in.

Yeah the artist would be Nick Robles, hopefully it is a case of unawareness.

It should be noted that every creator in the book is queer.

Devin Grayson has written some good Batman stories (including a terrific Hugo Strange tale), I enjoyed some of her Nightwing run (not that story, obviously) and while her Titans run has never been reprinted, it's generally liked by people who have read it. (It's also what got Lewis Lovhaug interested in comics, for what that's worth). There's more to her than her worst bits.

The five best Superman writers are Dan Jurgens, Jeph Loeb, Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, and Peter J. Tomasi.

Devin Grayson is a fine writer in general, but the incident with Tarantula is a serious low point (as perfect an example of Double Standard:Rape, Female on Male as you're likely to find). I've actually read her stuff since before she was a professional, and the Tarantula thing shows a blind spot that goes all the way back to her amateur work. Still, that was a long time ago and I expect she's learned from all the criticism she's gotten over it.

I'd say though that she might be a little too fond of Nightwing to write him effectively. He comes off a bit like a Mary Sue in her hands. I've read other things by her that I think are great, but I remain mostly ambivalent about her run on Nightwing.

[down]Yeah, that goes back to her amateur days, too.

I did find this post delving into Grayson's Nightwing stuff.

She also ships Dick with Bruce bizarrely enough.

DDG: I’m writing a novel for WB right now that he’s in and I have one scene where Batman has to stop a fight before it gets out of control, and most of the people he can just yell or glare at, but with Dick, he just stands really close behind him and Dick freezes. That’s not supposed to be a sexual thing (though it is kinda hot! ::laughs::), it’s an understanding on Bruce’s part that his physical proximity will speak just as quickly and loudly to Dick as his voice, maybe even be processed faster.

DG: And now think about being a very physical and naturally gregarious and loving person and growing up with someone like Bruce. Then add in the confusion about his status - a “ward” is something you stop being the minute you turn eighteen. Having already lost his parents and then hurling into adolescence at the speed he did…in my personal version of the story, he develops sexual desire and social anxiety about the future at the same time, and this leads to tremendous confusion, on his part, about his role in Bruce’s life. He can’t be a ward forever, in the back of his head he knows he won’t be Robin forever…what is he to this man who is at once his best friend and personal savior, personal god? “Son” is what they eventually settle on, but I think when Dick was in his late teens, the idea of “lover” must have run through his mind (which means, really, as we’ve already discussed, it ran through his body).

Frederic Wertham would have a field day with this. Why does anyone want to ship Bruce with his son? EDIT: I just read the tumblr post you linked to, and wow. I had no idea.

On to some positive news

Actor Bruce Campbell to pen ‘DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead’!

DC Comics has revealed a new DC Horror is on the way and it features Sgt. Rock written by Ash himself Bruce Campbell! Titled, DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead, the series is by Campbell with art by comics legend Eduardo Risso. Given both of their backgrounds, it should be a ton of fun. Plus we know Campbell knows his way around zombies. In the case of this new DC Horror series, he’s fighting resurrected dead Nazi soldiers. Groovy.

The six-issue series starts and goes on sale on September 27th.

The story begins in Berlin, 1944. The Nazis are flanked on all fronts by the combined Allied forces, and defeat seems inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, Hitler and his team of evil scientists create a serum that resurrects their dead soldiers, creating an army of the dead even stronger than they were in life.

Sgt. Rock, hero of the European Theatre, and his Easy Company find themselves dispatched into enemy territory to face off against the strangest, most horrific enemies they’ve encountered yet: Nazi Zombies.

The first issue will also have a Duffel Bag Gore variant cover drawn by Frank Quitely, a cover by Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard, horror expert artist Francesco Francavilla, and another by Chris Mooneyham, Pia Guerra (Y: The Last Man), and the main cover by Gary Frank.

Sgt. Rock first appeared in June, 1959, in DC’s anthology comic Our Army at War #83. Sgt. Franklin John Rock and his Easy Company became a mainstay of DC’s popular war comics. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, Sgt. Rock was soldier of almost preternatural ability and grit, battling Nazis across Europe and Northern Africa during World War II. Now, he’s back, in a new, terrifying setting in this action-horror mash-up, updating a classic DC hero for new fans!

Groovy

Grayson was also the one who retconned Dick into being Romani. While some fans don't mind the retcon in and of itself, some have criticized Grayson's portrayal of Romani culture for being inaccurate and racist.

[up] Interesting. Has Campbell ever been in a DC adaptation?

[up] Yeah, she once did a couple of stories where a guy who was a walking pile of Romani stereotypes showed up and tried to pass himself off as Dick's long-lost grandfather. Not a good look. She portrayed Romani like a fantasy D&D race rather than an actual ethnic group.

I'll say that making a mental leap from a parent-child relationship (or even a mentor-student relationship) to a lover relationship because you're confused about your official legal status seems...weird. I don't think that's a route most people would take, regardless of their sexuality.

Though, Dick's supposed have been, what? Twelve or so when Bruce took him in? If you're already in puberty when you're adopted, I can see that creating a different dynamic than if they raised you from an earlier age.

Like, if a twelve year old boy were taken in by, say, Black Canary, would anyone be surprised if he developed a crush on her?

I kind of feel like Dick works better as a younger brother figure; he and Bruce aren’t far enough apart in age to be father and son, I don’t think.

Tim and of course Damian are the sons.

Great that Sgt. Rock is getting a new comic, always great when we get a new not-Batman title.

Dick's age when he became Robin has gone up and down over the years. Originally, he was eight, but they've aged him up over the years for various regions.

His age isn't actually specified in the very first story he appears in (I don't think), though he looks like he might be about 10 or so. Later sources put him at 8, and still later sources made him older than that. In the Young Justice animated series, I think he starts off as 13, and already at that age pretty experienced as Robin (he's supposed to be the youngest on the team, but the most experienced hero); I think DC's official word on it right now is he became Robin at 15.

I've gotten the impression that DC wants to make all their original/main superheroes start their career around the same time, but at the same time this conflicts with their desire for Batman to have a longer history

The New 52 was a real mess in many ways, especially with how they dealt with both Batman and GL, really.
