Me? I didn't.
I even tried to stick to the unspoken rule of making sure my character is based on another character.
Generally, there are 3 canon precedents for ways to make a RWBY character (which applies to both the characterization and naming convention): gender-swapped historical/mythological figure, based on a fairy tale character, and 'not even trying to hide it' expy of a character from "The Wizard of Oz". It is SO sad that all most people tend to remembers is "their name needs to be a color". That's not completely true even in the show. See: Ozpin, Adam, Tukson, Glynda, James, Leo, Oscar, Ghira, Illya, Jaune, Nora, Ren, Oobleck (or 'Bartholomew' if you're going to be picky)...
PREEEEEEEETTTTTTTTY sure Oscar is gender-swapped Ozma of Oz...Which is all sorts of ironic because Ozma was first introduced as a boy...

Well, lemme go over my characters again:
Team HART
Harley: (Harlequin Green) The Mad Hatter / March HareAlice: (Alice Blue, actually her whole name) ...
Rufus: (Rufus Red) The wielder of the Vorpal Sword
Thistle: (Thistle Purple) The Cheshire Cat
Team RFTS
Rubeus: (Male form of Ruby) Rubeus HagridFaust: (Phosphorous, the white fire) Asura
Taupe: (Taupe grey) Bugs Bunny
Sunny: (...) An Imperial Commissar
Team um... this acronym doesn't make sense.
HelgaCrystal: (Crystals are a color reference right?) Cinderella and Chun-Li of Street Fighter
Lemon: (Actually has a pink and yellow thing going on) Rapunzel and Princess Peach
Forrest: (...) The Green Knight and the Doom Marine
Wasn't the rule something like needing to make color come mind? Which is why we have animal and season names. Some of the others are things most people won't get right away or twisted to fit.
Off the top of my head:
Adam - Red Earth
Oscar Pine - Evergreen
Ghira Belladonna - Nightshade
Jaune - French for Yellow
Ren - Lotus
Oobleck - Green slime
I think they miscounted the arrows.
Two teams I created:
- Team SCFR
- Schiefer Freischutz
- Cian Niakhan
- Fuksia Larrey
- Rufus Tesla
- Team BRNS
- Bruneis "Runya" Favrika
- Raine Fuchsia
- Nehus Parang
- Shepherd Slate
Very tempted to make Team TDHB (Tom, Dick, Harry, Bob) just to break the trend...
Honestly, I hate that restriction myself as well.
There are people who vehemently enforce that rule and I feel that those people are missing the point, seeing how the in the series the purpose of the color naming is to celebrate individuality and freedom.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. There's also the fairytale/storybook source in Ghira's name (I think). It seems to be a reference to Bagheera, black panther.

Ah, I meant to point at droy since they're the one who brought it up. My bad.
Yeah, the person you're responding to seemed to incorporate some of what I said, which I have to repeal because it misrepresents my stance.
I don't believe the color "rules" are all that restrictive for the aforementioned reasons. It doesn't have to be a color - you don't have to have Blue, Green, Red, Amethyst, Jewel, or Neon. In fact names like Taurus are clever - it's an astrological sign, and Adam has a bull-like design and a red and black color scheme, all while being characterized by his rage - and have little to do with colors on the surface level.
However, I do think the names of gems/standard and obscure colors tend to stand out more, and most are taken. I remember "Malachite Gordon" more than I remember "Steve Hairaglon."
And I do think that the "rules" should be followed somewhat.
- Ozpin was singled out as the only one who didn't have a "color-referencing name" by Monty early on, and that helped distinguish him as important.
- Imagine a Dragonball OC whose name is "Kyle" or a Naruto OC whose name is "Anastasia." In those series there isn't any particular rule about naming characters, but you can obviously see that those names wouldn't fit in those universes.
Anybody can write what they want and I can't stop them. But for the reasons mentioned I think you're betting off trying to create some kind of connection - be it a standard color, an obscure color, mythological, fantasy. If nothing else it stretches the creative muscles.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I have the post by Monty saved where he explains the colour naming rule. It says as such:
Characters in RWBY must be:
- A color
- Something that sounds like a color.
- Something that means a color.
- Something that makes you think of a color.
If a character is on a team, then the first letter of their name must fit in a 4 letter acronym that spells a team name that must also be:
- A color
- Something that sounds like a color.
- Something that means a color.
- Something that makes you think of a color.
Now, of all the names you listed that Cross didn't bring up (and some expansions):
- Ozpin: Stated by Monty to not follow the color rule, but still does. The Wizard of Oz, OZPINHEAD, is associated with? Green. What colour is Ozpin's suit? Dark green
- Tukson: Variant of the Spanish given name "Tucson" which means "black base".
- Glynda: The name "Glynda" is from the name "Glenda", which comes from the Welsh 'glân ("holy, fair") and da ("good"). Or in other words: Good, fair-haired woman.
- James: James Ironwood? What colour is iron?
- Leo: Lions aren't associated with yellow?
- Illya: Amitola is the word for "rainbow" in Sioux or Cherokee.
- Nora: Nora is the shortened form of the Greek Eleanor or Eleonora, meaning light, in Arabic, "Nora" is another form of Noor or Nur (نور), also literally meaning 'light'.
A LOT of people seem to forget most of the rules with the colour-naming, and only focus on the first two, and not the other two.

Read chapter 68 of White Sheep.
Oh my God, Ren gets kidnapped again.
With Cinder deciding to spare Pyrrha because the latter confessed her love for Jaune, ''making her a candidate of his harem, this fic is now bordering on a Crack Fic territory.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.BORDERING? Have we been reading the same fic? It's been there since Jaune was half-Grimm!
Not for me, it wasn't. That didn't make the fic seem cracky by itself. And the shenanigans that followed, well, I read Coeur's other fics. That's just only a slightly upbeat and exaggeration of his usual style, that being things spiraling out of control despite everyone's initial plans.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. So, the newest chapter of White Sheep.
Two sentences:
"So, we just pretend nothing happened, right?"
"NOW you're speaking my language."
Oh God, this fic. XD
Edit: So I made a typo and typed in White Fang instead and it still turned up a blue link. Huh, I guess there's a fanfic by that name.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. It really bugs me that Jaune gets so many fics like this. Ruby is supposed to be our protagonist and thus you expect to see stuff like this crop up for her but no, it's Jaune about 90% of the time.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! It's like how the Buffy fandom has a huge number of Xander fics. It's OP wish fulfillment.
Jaune is easier to latch onto because he looks like the biggest underdog in the show, plus he's treated more like a standard protagonist than whatever Ruby scrapped up over the past 5 seasons.

I have a feeling that sheer proportions of Jaune-centric fic is at least partially due to Coeur Al'Aran, the most popular fanfic writer of the fandom.
Seriously, go to RWBY section in Fanfiction.net and sort by reviews. All top 8 most reviewed fanfics are by that guy. And yes, they all center around Jaune.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Hey, you guys remember how I mentioned a crossover with Fate/stay night ages ago? Well, here it is! (On FF.net)
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Chapter 2 of "Remnants of Fate" is now up. (On FF.net) In it, Shirou uses his legendary cooking prowess to make some friends and then proceeds to fuck things up a bit.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Finished Chapter 75 of White Sheep.
Oh my God, the best chapter ending ever.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I'm up to Chapter 5 of Remnants of Fate now, by the way. I just haven't been bothered to post updates here. The latest chapter covers the events of both parts of "The Badge and the Burden." We're also halfway through Volume 1 in regards to its chapter count.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! After not talking about it for a while, I return to you with news! "Remnants of Fate" Chapter 10 is now up which means Volume 1 is complete! There's even a stat sheet for the characters if you want to check that out.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! Are there any fanfics of RWBY Chibi rather than the main show?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
Wait a second, I was spit-balling, why did you think RWBY was hard to make OC's for?
