He was simultaneously a tyrant and a business visionary. He had his faults, but let's not forget his human side - don't forget that Shigeru Miyamoto was hired as a favor to Miyamoto's father, a friend of Yamauchi. And he took the various shots Nintendo programmers would slide at him in games with grace (count how many times his name appears in the credits oh-so-coincidentally at the same time as Bowser or Ganon are on screen).
Also, he saved the Seattle Mariners, despite deep-seated racism on the part of many then-owners of MLB teams. As a sports fan, I can tip my hat to that as well (not to mention that also led to the increasing globalization of American baseball in general, as their signing of Ichiro Suzuki was a watershed moment, and that arguably was due to Yamauchi's involvement).
For better or for worse... you were a Magnificent Bastard, Yamauchi. For better or for worse, thank you.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.Rest in peace Yamauchi.
You are a big part of what made Nintendo what it is now, and that should not be ignored.
One Strip! One Strip!Rest in Peace Hiroshi Yamauchi.
You did a lot for gaming and also did a lot of good for Nintendo as a whole.
Batman Ninja more like Batman's Bizarre AdventureRest in peace, Yamauchi. You will be missed.
Aww... :C
My condolences goes to his family and friends. He was a pretty cool guy.
GO AHEAD .... MR. JOEHSTUR .......For bringing the systems that some of my favorite games of all time would come out for..
Thanks, man :(
Well that sucks. He certainly brought gaming to new levels. May he sleep peacefully.
Now's it's Shulk Time! It's unfortunate for him to go out with Nintendo in the state it's in now. If only he and his peers made better relations with outer parties before things went to shit. Perhaps the industry would be different...

He was a great businessman and a great man in general. Rest in peace, Mr. Yamauchi.
I didn't really know Nintendo under him. I joined the Nintendo Fun Club around the time Mr. Iwata became the top guy.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatAmong other things, Yamauchi was responsible for Nintendo's forage into videogames, ensuring Shigeru Miyamoto's rise as a creator of videogame figures we all know and love, getting the Donkey Kong arcade game out in the world, asserting Nintendo as a prominent player in the world of videogames and turning it into the legendary videogame powerhouse it is today, getting the videogame industry to where it is today, and choosing Iwata as his successor.
Basically, it doesn't matter whether you're a Nintendo fan, a Sony fan, a Microsoft fan, a different company fan, a PC gamer, or a mobile gamer, and it doesn't matter whether you love videogames in one form or all its forms: You all owe something to this man.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!He did what he had to do but unfortunately anyone else who tried to do some of those things today would get lynched whether by fans or shareholders, even if it was himself.
R.I.P. Thank you for making my childhood more entertaining.
Srg. Dornan: Troper, what are you doing here?! Get back to your post!!!The key turning point was in Yamauchi's promotion of Gunpei Yokoi.
RIP Yamauchi-san.
He will surely be missed. The video game industry would be a very, very different place without Mr. Yamauchi's influence, so he's a figure who definitely garners that kind of acknowledgement, if not respect.
"Oh no, Sanji's Chronic Simprosis!" - Kou The MadA cunning businessman and an entertainment visionary. May he rest in peace, knowing that his hard work has given the world much joy.
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia! Why was my last post deleted??
Anyway, again, I knew a lot about Yamauchi from N Gamer. R.I.P.
DumboWhy does this man not have a Trope page yet?
So long, old friend. Thanks for all the childhood.
Dakota's blog An odd agent of justiceProbably because he was primarily a businessman, and did not have a direct hand in actually creating any of the big Nintendo characters or franchises.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)R.I.P.
Don't Press Your Luck too many times in life. You'll just get whammied.Wait, what were the supposedly negative/nasty things he did? Was he ruthless towards employees or was he just a hardass to work for or was it something else?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Wellllll I heard once he had an affair with one of the workers in Nintendo's Love Hotels. May have been slander though. Also, I think he was not fully paying their taxi drivers?...
Those aside (and I don't have sources, I read them.....somewhere long ago), nothing "negative/nasty" about him. Occasionally arrogant and hostile, like when the Sony partnership fell through. But that's just like quite a lot of CE Os. He was a smart CEO, and philanthropic when he retired.
Dumbo
The man who made Nintendo the giant that it is has passed away. note
While I'm not the hugest Nintendo fan, I will gladly give this man a nod, as gaming would not be what it is today without him. Fare thee well.
