I really think the idea of equalist ponies is very defendable. Why do they need just ONE princess to rule or any princesses at all? When will democracy start?

Perhaps Celestia is merely the Legislator of the House of Commons? Or a figurehead monarch like The Queen of England, who serves as an adviser to the Prime Minister? We don't actually know that Celestia has any governing power, so far as I recall.

Well they seemed to not have anything about the princesses, but rather, everypony being equal and having no special talents or Cutie marks.
Surprised they let them not dye their coats and manes the same colors.

I don't know, monarchies may not work that well in real life, but in a world where the leaders are both immortal and benevolent, they would probably be the better option.

I figure the princesses delegate a lot of the work and mainly protect the kingdom from threats too big for the guard to handle.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!

There are very few things in between petty crime and Tirek levels of evil in Equestria. That's the trade off, living there. Crime is low, but doomsday happens once a month or so.

Immortal, benevolent, and intelligent, and motivated. Leave out those last two, and you've got problems. Imagine if Pinkie Pie were princess:

As old Winston supposedly put it, democracy is the worst form of government except for all of the other ones we've tried. It's just that we haven't tried monarchy/theocracy with Celestia.

I tend to assume that the Princesses do hold the highest level of authority (who's going to tell them "no"?) but they tend to let the ponies self-govern unless something really bad happens.

Heard good things about that show. Will need to add it to my to watch backlog (now containing the rest of S4 of MLP, Space Dandy, Gurren Laggan and The Walking Dead).
Also, I am starting to think that Dr Whooves really is a timelord. Just saw the next episode preview image on Netflix (for S4 Ep16). It has him wearing the old red/blue 3D glasses while next to a pony with a rose cutie mark. So where has he been hiding the Tardis this whole time?
