I really think the idea of equalist ponies is very defendable. Why do they need just ONE princess to rule or any princesses at all? When will democracy start?
"We be we baby!"Perhaps Celestia is merely the Legislator of the House of Commons? Or a figurehead monarch like The Queen of England, who serves as an adviser to the Prime Minister? We don't actually know that Celestia has any governing power, so far as I recall.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Well they seemed to not have anything about the princesses, but rather, everypony being equal and having no special talents or Cutie marks.
Surprised they let them not dye their coats and manes the same colors.

I don't know, monarchies may not work that well in real life, but in a world where the leaders are both immortal and benevolent, they would probably be the better option.
I figure the princesses delegate a lot of the work and mainly protect the kingdom from threats too big for the guard to handle.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!I imagined it as the princesses handling national and international affairs, and the local governments handle the town/city affairs.
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkSo... any threat more dangerous then a jaywalker or two?
There are very few things in between petty crime and Tirek levels of evil in Equestria. That's the trade off, living there. Crime is low, but doomsday happens once a month or so.

Immortal, benevolent, and intelligent, and motivated. Leave out those last two, and you've got problems. Imagine if Pinkie Pie were princess:
"Are you sure imposing a 500% tax increase on vegetables is what's best for everypony, Mr. Lobbyist?"
"Absolutely, your majesty! The increased revenue will allow us to pay massive bonuses to the CEOs of Big Sugar, ensuring that they keep doing the best job they can to supply the country with sweet, sweet, lucrative sweets."
"Well, I sure do like sweets! Consider it decreed!"
Or Rainbow Dash?
"Your Majesty, we really need to go over the kingdom's annual budget today. The current proposal puts us five gajillion bits over the national GDP for the next decade!"
"Yeah, yeah, we'll get to that boring stuff later. I have a race to attend."

What matters in this life is much more than winning for ourselves. What really matters is helping others win, too. - F. Rogers. As old Winston supposedly put it, democracy is the worst form of government except for all of the other ones we've tried. It's just that we haven't tried monarchy/theocracy with Celestia.
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty. We need supreme robotic overlords.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.Oh shit, I was just thinking that.
Clearly, this mean that Celestia is a robot. That would explain her seemingly immortal status.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.I tend to assume that the Princesses do hold the highest level of authority (who's going to tell them "no"?) but they tend to let the ponies self-govern unless something really bad happens.
Reaction Image RepositoryLuna at least seems more concerned with helping fillies with nightmares than with doing any sort of governing.
She was trapped on the moon for thousands of years. It would take a while for her to be able to get back into doing things like governing again
Avatar by Pastel Mistress: http://pastelmistress.deviantart.com/Heard good things about that show. Will need to add it to my to watch backlog (now containing the rest of S4 of MLP, Space Dandy, Gurren Laggan and The Walking Dead).
Also, I am starting to think that Dr Whooves really is a timelord. Just saw the next episode preview image on Netflix (for S4 Ep16). It has him wearing the old red/blue 3D glasses while next to a pony with a rose cutie mark. So where has he been hiding the Tardis this whole time?

Luna subtlety jabs her reset button with her horn.

New teaser for the season... and so much HYPE!... just from one single quick scene.
Looking more and more like the CMC just might get their Cutie marks this season.
