Typing this at 4 AM so expect some incoherency.

I've been trying to find some old gaming magazines for years now—but I have no idea which ones they were or what year they were made. All i remember is my cousin had 'em. I remember walkthroughs/previews for Spike McFang, Aero the Acro-bat, Whomp 'Em, and I think Tomba. These were PROBABLY split across issues/series. XD

Then i remember a Playstation focused magazine, or at least a couple articles were, where it detailed a walkthrough of Mega Man X5—including showing the ending. "With his last burst of energy, Zero destroys Sigma." I THINK the same ish also had a Lunar 2 Eternal Blue boss guide. "Smash Zophar in just 4 turns!"

I also remember a Tiny Toons walkthrough, and the Death and Return of Superman walkthrough, and the first Wario Land. These were all Gameboy games, but no idea what magazine it was.

I also remember a Nintendo power letters column which featured gaers talking about what they consider to be the best video game endings of all time, and someone mentioned Earth Bound. Another ish had a Shantae walkthrough, leading to a moment I kick myself every day for—I begged for it every day, and I finally got a copy of Shantae, with box instruction manual, everything—and either lost it or got rid of it because it was too hard. :(

Mna, gaming magazines were/are awesome. x3

EDIT: I also remember, i THINK it was EGM, having a thing where they pitted 2 characters against each other. One was Pikachu vs Darth Maul, another was Ash from Pokemon vs Nemesis from Resident Evil, and still another was Mega Man vs Samus. (Pikachu, Nemesis, and Samus won.)

I remember my first issue of Nintendo Power, because it had a letter featured from an extremely overenthusiastic Donkey Kong fan who was singlehandedly trying to turn him into Chuck Norris. I remember about halfway through he ran out of powers DK actually had, and starting making things up, leading up to "...he can shoot fire and ice, and he can DO DONKEY FLARE AND WIPE OUT THE WORLD WITH HIS MIND!"

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great

[up] That is awesome XD

One of the NP issues I do have had a letters feature about what you learned from video games.

"WWF Wrestlemania 2000 taught me it's a bad idea to get hit in the head with a steel chair."

There was also someone named Mr. Immortal who said whenever they played Castlevania II, every time they tried to jump over a lake they'd fall in the water. So when someone threw their keys across a pool, rather than risk certain death they walked around the side and grabbed it. NP then wondered why someone named Mr. Immortal was worried about certain death.

I think the funniest one was someone who claimed to have been in a plane when it started to go down, ran into the cockpit and hit the button they saw in Perfect Dark. The plane leveled out and they saved more than 250 people in flight.

I have fond memories of Video Games and Computer Entertainment. I was kind of sad when they went to just video games, though.

Ah, just remembered something else! This was in the letters column of a magazine asking what video games readers would like to see made. Someone wrote in saying Capcom should make a Mega Woman series, an all-new series spun off from mega Man. "The enemies would be different and a lot harder."

Some Robot Mistresses proposed were Spear Woman, Volt Woman, and I think Nuke Woman. "Instead of fighting Dr. Wily, you'd fight his daughter, Weaseletta, and her terrifying teddy!"

...Also, I just remembered being steaming mad about a comment in Game Players Magazine on Sonic The Hedgehog 3, saying it was better than Sonic 2. At the time my only exposure to a Genesis was at a friend's house, and he had Sonic 2 but not 3—so Sonic 2, especially the multiplayer mode, became special for that reason.

It didn't help that they said Sonic 2 was disappointing. :P

"After a disappointing Sonic 2, this one really blasts onto the scene. Detailed modeling and amazing animation make it even better than Sonic CD! Blue lightning strikes!"

I remember the Resident Evil 4 review in the Official Playstation 2 Magazine had a picture of Leon fighting Chief Mendez's millipede form with the caption "Look at me, I'm a millipede! Look at me!" That caption is equal parts Crowning Moment Of Funny and Nightmare Retardant.

Anyone remember Nintendo Power's Project M?

One April Fool's Day joke had Nintendo talking about Warp Pipe technology being experimented on and utilized in real life. Months later, two people wrote in to ask how the project was going.

Favorite NP letter moment: The issue after a debate was held about "are video games better or worse now than they were twenty years ago", a overthinking reader sent an incredibly long letter on the subject. So long, that part of it ran the length of the entire page until was interrupted. What was it interrupted with? A picture of a NP staffer reading the letter and his head exploding.

Also, the "Cooking with Chris Hoffman" article. Still alive octopus indeed.

I remember seeing Star Fox 64 in a gaming magazine ten thousand years ago, I also remember around 2004ish, there were rumors of Star Craft 2 being created, they had an image of a 3d terran vulture and some other stuff, I was excited, unfortunately while the rumors were true it would take them 6 more years to actually release the game.

It's interesting to see what magazines either got wrong or had changed later on. Amy the Hedgehog's name was Rosy for a long time.

"I just beat Jet Force Gemini last night, and it was incredible! I've learned that if a huge arachnid tries to destroy my planet I should just bust out the Tri-Rocket Launcher."

"I was playing my favorite game, Ogre Battle: Person of Lordly Caliber, when I noticed a sword was named "Sum Mannus." I thought it was a Latin phrase, so I looked it up. Sure enough, it means "I am a pony."

"Has anyone noticed that a couple of characters in Mario Tennis would actually have a very difficult time playing? I'm talking about Shy Guy and Boo. Neither of the characters has visible fingers, so how do their hold their racket? Is it stuck there with Velcro?"

"Shy Guy tells us that his racket is a custom model and it stays in place through the use of high-powered magnets. Boo, however, just muttered something about "sticky ectoplasm" and we'll leave it at that."

"I've heard speculation about a Play Station 3 that can play any type of CD—even a Nintendo Game Cube! Is this rumor true?"

"Seeing that Sony just released the Playstation2 (and barely at that) I wouldn't worry about an all-powerful PS 3 any time soon."

I remember owning a Nintendo Power issue with a one-page Animal Crossing feature that documented, among other things, a couple of players' towns that got sent in to the magazine.

I bring this up because one of those towns was Christian Weston Chandler's Cwcville (this was long before I actually knew about the guy, keep in mind).

I remember some NP issues that had the staff members documenting their life in Animal Crossing. The two players in Our-Town were Spiffy and Martha, and there was another guy who lived in a town called Crud.

[up]Nintendo Power, either March '08 or April '08. Either way, the cover story was Mario Kart Wii. The cover also had a little blurb about a new DS IP from Squeenix. A little game called The World Ends With You.

The five-page story about the game sucked me in immediately. Battles on both screens? Follow up a melee combo with a flashy pyrokinetic display? Originality oozing from the music and setting? Fighting bears with tattoos for arms? I made sure to buy that game as soon as I could.

Five years later, TWEWY is pretty much my favorite game of all time. The article didn't even touch on the hilarious writing or the characters. The story resonated with the mopey kid I was at the time, and the gameplay never got old. So for that, I thank Nintendo Power.

The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]
