Finding and making avatars to be smaller than 20K is really surprisingly hard. What about changing the limit to 30K?

You can resize images yourself using any editor. The reason for the size limitation is that pages full of avatars suck up the site's bandwidth more than almost anything else.

I personally use picresize site to handle image cropping. When there's an image size limit on a site I use, it was often the memory size rather than dimensions that were more restrictive. Though picresize allows you to convert the .png (which is often bigger in memory size) to .jpg or .gif without much difference in quality.

I use Paint, which comes with every version of Windows. It's not really that complex.

Paint is useful for cropping and basic editing, but it doesn't do so well when you want to resize a portion of an image to a zoomed out resolution. That's when a resizer website comes in handy.

We're talking about forum avatars here, right? 100x100 px doesn't carry a huge burden for image quality.

Nobody does their avatars at 100 x 100. I edit them at 350-400 and they resize automatically when you upload them here. The only thing you really have to adjust when uploading an avatar is the 20 KB file limit.

I resized mine down to 100x100 before uploading it, as I recall. I think the file may actually be on my other computer.

Huh, I forgot that the size resizes them for you. Does it fit proportionally, or does it scale down to the maximum of 100 x 100 even if you have a nonsquare, like 300 x 350?

EDIT: Disregard.

I tried uploading it as 300X300 but it still says the file size is too big.

File size is in kilobyte, I assume. The maximum image size is in pixels. Two separate limits.

It's smart enough to get the appropriate proportions, so it won't turn into a deformity.
