Remember how Pixar was doing a program for indie CG animation called SparkShorts and one of them was about a sentient ball of yarn named Purl?

It just showed up on YouTube!

Careful, it's a little more mature than Pixar's usual material.

[up] Still has a great, and very welcome message though, I think. Good to see them branching out a bit.

It's a pretty great analogy for equality in the workplace.

Someone at Pixar apparently REALLY expressed their feelings in this short. The ending is sadly a little bit unrealistic.

[up][up][up] It’s well-executed, but if you ever felt ostracized at work, you may feel twinges of “oh man, that’s so me...”

I see a lot of comments on social media about the commentary not being subtle.

And I get frustrated with that as a writer. Not that subtlty isn't good; Its REALLY good. I like subtle storytelling.

But the problem with subtle storytelling is that it either goes over people's heads, thereby missing the entire point, or it gets too specific and circumstancial where an audience could dismiss or out right not get it because what was shown doesn't apply to their view of life for x, y, z reason.

Unfortunately, the reality is that its probably better to drop an anvil than miss the target all together. And since this is STILL something we have to talk about in the real world, the possibility of someone just not getting it isn't a price we should pay.

Here's a fun little bit of Disney history for you guys. The day that the the Disneyland Monorail was dedicated in 1959, Bob Gurr accidentally kidnapped the then Vice President of the United States, Richard Nixon.

Since the ceremony was only supposed to consist of a dedication of the monorail, without actually carrying any guests, Bob Gurr, the head imagineer behind the project, was given the honor of being the first to captain it for its debut. That morning, he pulled the monorail up to the station, to find Walt and Nixon and his family and a secret service detail, already waiting at the platform, and Walt immediately invited them inside, to show off the interior. It wasn't long before Walt told Gurr to take everyone for a lap around the track, and since you don't say no to Walt, he did, leaving the secret Service behind on the platform! Once they had just about finished the loop, one of Nixon's Daughters asked for another ride, and Walt, of course said, "Bobby, give them another ride!"

Nixon apparently found this whole thing to be hilarious, but all Bob Gurr could think about is that he had accidentally kidnapped the vice president on a monorail, which had given him nothing but technical problems, and had completed it's first successful run around the track literally the night before. (Walt, of course, only had eyes for his Monorail)

The power Walt held over everything and everyone is always shocking to me. After he brought back designs and schematics for a monorail designed by the ALWEG Company he had seen on a trip to Germany, he gave them to Bob Gurr, who developed a new sleeker, and less boxy design in about an hour, and presented it to Walt, who loved it, and the decision was made, right then and there, to build a Monorail for Disneyland. The cars and a lot of the mechanics were completely designed and built by WED, since ALWEG turned the project down, only providing the rail, and serving as advisors on the project. They were running on such a short time scale, that it only had its first test run a few weeks before the the big debut was scheduled, and the engine caught on fire and exploded. That turn around time hasn't been replicated before or since Walt, and may well be impossible today.

Lol about the part with the German engineer freaking out...but he was completely right. That was incredible dangerous and they are lucky that nothing happened.

Speaking of Nixon, though most people don't know it, the Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World was the scene of one of the most famous moments in American history.

For it was there that Nixon proclaimed to the world "I am not a crook!"

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."

[up][up][up]How much did Walt actually notice the chaos going on around him, I wonder

The way he describes how the process of building this thing, it’s absolutely incredible that it was finished at all.

I doubt that they had a chance in the first place. I got the impression that JKR was from the get go of the opinion that Disney wouldn't treat her property right.

[up] To be fair, it was the late Eisner era, when Disney was pushing out such enduring classics such as The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management, Journey into (Your) Imagination, and Superstar Limo (or really, the entirety of Opening day California Adventure.).

Do you really blame her?

[up][up] Well, if there is something I really blame her for is that she is so adamant about not wanting an animated adaptation of Harry Potter. And that she keeps supporting the hack Yates.

Understandable, she probably felt she had more control over a live action film then animated one, which is understandable because it's her intellectual property

I dislike Harry Potter so this doesn't exactly bug me. but it'd be very profitable for Disney if they could make animated films (or even something else, like face characters) for the series. I don't think there's any other YA series that can hold a candle to HP. I'm not big on popular YA literature, but most aren't as accessible as Harry Potter.

Random thought: anyone else get the impression that Herc and Meg are one of the few (only?) Disney couples where the girl's a good bit older than the guy? Despite how huge he is, Herc's explicitly stated to be only eighteen, while Meg's having been in at least one serious relationship before and just her general world-weary personality makes me think she can't be younger than mid-twenties.

The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."
