That would be an interesting approach to a Sentai/PR season, have something so radical that the Rangers are fighting across time, space or dimensions to keep it under wraps. Then 3/4's of the way through the season they have to deal with a Broken Masquerade and that is an active hindrance to their mission.

Actually, SPD didn't necessarily let people know who the rangers were. Some did, some didn't. It wasn't outright public like Lightspeed Rescue. It seemed more like only the aliens know who the rangers were at best. It was pretty inconsistent at times, especially considering the Stakeout episode which implied that humans don't automatically know which person is a ranger. Some may, some may not. My guess is the regular Police force does, and obviously Piggy and some aliens do(if it's not common knowledge for the aliens at that point).

I don't recall any such inconsistency. It would be especially difficult for such things not to be public given how often the Rangers morphed in plain view. Plus, why bother keeping who is a Ranger a secret?

That SF Showdown movie was pretty good, this time Gia wasn't a damsel in distress and we got to see her go Super Mega, also Ninjor

Rangerboard provided this concept art for Divatox. Or should I say Darvia as she was originally going to be known.

Too bad it would never fly past the censors.

I don't really think the skull was an issue for censors when Rito was a mainstay of the show for several years. Similarly the outfit in the concept art isn't much more revealing than the one that got picked. I assume they just selected something different. That or the giant horns on the skull could be very annoying for the actresses so they decided to avoid that.

I'm actually more interested in the lore included with the image. A big issue with the Turbo movie is that it doesn't bother explaining anything, previous adventures took them to other planets or other dimensions, but it never clarified where the island of Maligore was. That text implies it was on Earth and that Maligore might have been some sort of Elemental that could shift tectonic plates.

The costume itself is cool, looks like D&D art, but probably too stripperiffic for a kids show. Certainly better than what we got, as the asymmetric mask with psuedo-fish find was just weird. I briefly met Hillary Shepard Turner at a Star Trek convention (she had a couple of bit roles on DS 9) and was actually surprised how pretty she is in person. The Divatox costume was just not that flattering. It does make me think how the show was careful later on to not obscure the faces of the actors, as why cast attractive actors only to cover then up (at least with those not wearing full-body costumes).

So I finished Super Ninja Steel (minus the Christmas episode obviously) and... well, my expectations were pretty low anyway. Haley and Calvin's relationship stuff could have been interesting but the acting felt a bit too wooden and there was just artificial drama from the previous episode. And the comic relief duo defeat two generals and blow up the enemy base. Ugh.

[up][up]Didn't the movie say the island was in the Bermuda Triangle?

Have you ever looked at Divatox? The only difference, exposed skin wise, between this and Divatox is she has a skirt. Otherwise, cleavage? Both have it. Exposed stomach? Divatox has that too (Her corset is opened down the middle) Exposed thighs? Same.

[up] It's the "Nemesis Triangle", which is like the Bermuda Triangle except eviler?

Then again, the t.v. show did ditch the cleavage.

She still has it, just less so. Point being, I don't think the amount of skin showing was why they ditched that costume concept. Theres barely any difference with the final product.

KJMackley Since: Jan, 2001

It was the "Nemesis Triangle." Like I said places like the "Desert of Despair" was clearly another planet and the "Island of Illusion" was a pocket dimension, and so not saying where exactly this place is contributes to the overall meaningless feel of the movie.

The concept art looks comparable to Starfire in that it is trying to show as much skin as possible. It's a weird phenomenon where a tank top and leggings with strategically cut-out sections looks more racy than a standard bikini. The final Divatox design was definitely still made with an eye towards being sexy, but toned down from the concept art in a similar way Starfire has been (the series also covered up a stomach window the movie had). In reality there is very little in common between the two besides "scantily clad female." That rams skull helmet is really the more striking thing about it.

I despise the comedy duo in Ninja Steel. Not even Bulk and Skull took out monster generals.

When Samurai came out, I really wanted Bulk and Spike to get involved in the main plot in some way. The whole time they just did their own thing and never had any real interactions with the Rangers and their fight. There was one episode where they went to the dojo to train, but that was it. I would have loved to have them help out during the last stretch of episode in even some small way. Now in Ninja Steel the comedy duo IS involved in the endgame, but I don't care because they were never anything but obnoxious. And then they took out the entire freakin ship with slapstick.

I guess I don't hate the whole comic relief duo thing (it's looking like Beast Morphers will have one too) but I don't really want plot interaction without some degree of heroism and Victor and Monty so failed on that. I guess either push them to the side and shoo out the clowns or give them something resembling character development.

I also feel like the scene on the ship could have been an 'have to reveal identity to save people' kind of moment as opposed to giving glory to the comic relief characters

Disney Brain reviews The Turbo movie.

Why do they need new Turbo powers when they should still have their Zeo powers, which should be super strong?

Obviously Alpha accidentally broke the Zeo Crystal while vacuuming.

Also, I feel it important to note that this time Jason is brainwashed and evil, while when Tommy first appeared he was a brainwashed ranger. And they don't do anything with it. This could have made for great juxtaposition and really added a new dynamic to the Jason/Tommy relationship, or at the very least been a great callback. But we don't get anything like that, and that's a shame.

I feel Divatox should have injured Rocky rather than have him be taken out of commission while practicing for a martial arts tournament. This would accomplish three things:

  • Sets Divatox up as a major threat.

  • Gives Rocky a more dignified send off.

  • Gives a good explanation for why the Zeo powers are no longer considered adequate.

Re: Tommy vs Jason. Honestly, Power Rangers has gone to the "lets fight because mind control/possession" well so often (especially in the Zordon years) that I'm not sure any significance could have been gleaned from Jason fighting Tommy due to mind control. Oh a Ranger is fighting the others because one his been brainwashed? I guess it's a day that ends with "y". This wasn't even the second time Jason and Tommy fought because one or both of them was under a spell.

Also, while not a call back to Green With Evil, I think Turbo may have had one to Zeo. When Kim is under the spell, Tommy takes off his helmet thinking that seeing his face will snap her out of it like how the Rangers powered down in front of Tommy to make him remember them in "King For A Day". Except in Turbo, it didn't work.
