Oh, thank you for letting me know. I'm more of a shoujo fan anyway... maybe I'll put it off a little bit longer.

Why were you born in such a cruel, violent world?

Jeez even Hisoka's punch to Gon during the hunter exam was more violent in the 99 version.

Gon gets flown back like 20 ft in both versions but his face has this look like he was just castrated.

Yeah the violence thing is going to change later on. Yorknew has the Phantom troupe after all.

/glances at that scene where Hisoka inexplicably turns some guys' arms into flowers; despite the fact that in the manga and original anime he just cut the guys' arms off.

I felt the vanishing arms was kind of in-character with the whole magician theme though.

The hisoka vs Gon fight was still done well although I kind of liked how Gon's beatdown was portrayed in 99 more since it the hits were more fast paced and Hisoka's expression more pained looking. 2011 was somewhat better paced and had some neat little touches added to it though. Both are highlights of that arc and one of my favorite fights in anime.

Gon, look to your right

-thwack-

Sorry, I meant my right.

And how did I completely forget about Canary? She was pretty awesome and is a lot cuter 2011 than she was in the 99 anime/manga. And yeah looking back at 99 that was another fight that was more violent. Gon starts spitting up blood at one part.

Huh I noticed 2011 killua's mom's eye stays the same color while in 99 it changes depending on her emotions. Feels like such weird detail to overlook.

I don't know how to break this to you, but both anime series were independently based on the manga, not each other. While it's reasonable to compare them, the 2011 series is generally more faithful, except for censorship in the first half. The 1999 series changed things up considerably, such as Killua's entire character arc.

Also Kite. I know they're based off the manga but since the manga is black/white there's no way to tell if Kikyo's color changes. It was a nice detail they added that 2011 didn't bother with(although they kept the fuzzy screen part).

I feel like both do some things better than the other. I'll have to watch the mafia arc from 99 again but 2011 did an excellent job on it and still remains the best arc of the show till that point. I did sort of like feitang's old voice more as he sounded more cocky.

But yeah the censorship is a bit annoying sometimes. In retrospect while the Hisoka/Gon fight was cool the heaven tower arc was probably my least favorite one. Sometimes Hx H seems like it would've been better without nen and had people just doing cool crap because that's the kind of world they lived in but I understand why the author put it in and he did at least do a good job implementing it.

Hmmm watching the Ubo vs shadow beasts and yeah 2011 York New's arc seems to be the more graphic one this time around, as opposed to the earlier arcs where it was the opposite. I preferred the 2011 version of this arc up till Pakunoda's segment(seems like that was sort of rushed at the end of 2011) where the older OVA kind of does better since it gave us Hisoka's hump.

Is the Phantom Troupe anyone else's favorite anime villain band? They're quite varied in appeal and design yet mesh together so well.

Just about finished Greed island, which is where I stopped in the manga.

You know conceptually this is one of the most interesting arcs but I really can't say the execution was as good as it should've been. The bomber thing was cool(the climax fight was pretty awesome) and Razor was pretty awesome but I kind of wished we got to see more of Greed island's game world instead of Biscuit turning it into a training arc and boring the hell out of me. Hisoka checking out gon and Killua's butts is still HILARIOUS, though I missed the little moan he gave in the old version.

But yeah Biscuit...ugh I really wished she never showed up as she kind of hindered the arc a lot for me. Her training segments were just boring, the 50+ year old bodybuilder takes form of loli is pretty dumb in concept(and even dumber looking) and her personality was kind of obtrusive to Gon/Killua's dynamic too. Not to mention her name is nonsense. Her outfit seemed really out of place for the arc too...felt like Greed Island would've been a lot better without Krueger gumming up the pacing and dynamic. I understand they wanted a female presence to balance out Gon/Killua and truthfully Hx H was kind of overdue for one but they should've just saved that role later on for Canary or something.

Jeez I can see why Chimera Ant arc is so divisive...it's so horribly paced at times and easily the most inconsistent arc in the series. You get an episode of absolute hype then next time gon goes on a date or an episode focus on the narrator explaining crap in the most long-winded way possible dragging down the show's pace to negative levels. I mean jeez, I get CA arc is like a love letter to DBZ but I didn't want DBZ's pacing for it either.

It's a fine example how manga faithfulness can actually make the show worse because this arc could've used a lot of trimming and better use of medium adapting. Slow mo freeze frames work much better in manga then they do in anime.

I feel like in some ways this is Hx H anime's worst arc and in other ways the best. Can't really decide how much I like it so far. I can tell you had i been watching this show on a weekly basis I probably would've dropped it though :/

And shiapouf is such an awful character. One of the worst villains on the show.

[up]York Shin exists, so you're mistaken.

[up][up]Hating Pouf? Thems fighting words, I'm afraid. He's easily the most interesting Royal Guard. And, like, there's that whole dynamic where the King's stronger and more important to the plot, but Pouf's the real threat.

All Royal Guards are great. Pouf is amazingly interesting to watch villain thanks to his campy mannerism full of Narm Charm and his really well-crafted servant-minded Blue-and-Orange Morality; Pitou was really badass, despite not being as interesting as the other two; and Youpi's Character Development made him earn my respect despite being the character I usually dislike (The Big Guy / The Brute) and protagonized the best fight in the entire manga.

[up]I found Pitou interesting if only because she was the only Royal Guard that clearly cared what the King wanted. Combined with other things I don't want to talk about now because I don't know were Vertigo is at.

I'm currently at Gon being mad, seething with rage, but waiting for pitou to finish playing operation. Am really looking forward to Gon wrecking her HARD but i kind of already know he loses his nen abilities thanks to a certain someone in the other thread :P

I can't blame Gon for wanting to go MADHOUSE on Pituo although I felt Kite's late introduction kind of hurt the impact of his fate a bit as having the audience more aware of him from the get go would've forged a stronger connection with them.

I forgot to mention Shiapouf is about to evolve(THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!!) and hopefully he evolves into an actually interesting character who isn't an overdramatic unfunny bishie that wastes time with his jelly sandwich. He's my least favorite of the royal guards definitely, with Pitou being my favorite but honestly I like Cheetu(despite the freakin booty shorts) and the chameleon bro over any of them. Leol sucked though, so glad he's dead. Felt like he overstayed his welcome. Zazan was cool too but man the chimera ants' designs are just -_-: at times. At least the King looks awesome, one of the coolest designs in the show by far. Better looking than Cell IMHO, who he was based off. The wolf guy has got to go though.

Really the whole subplot with Palm is feeling like extra nonsense that could've been left out and just drags the scope out too much to where it hinders. She and Knov ended up disappointing. The little octopus guy is another "joke" character who kind of annoys me but admittedly kind of works in a way too, I just think his VA is annoying and the OHOHOHO ARCHETYPICAL COOL OLDER GUY HEROIC SACRIFICE :_: Madhouse played up a bit too hammy which gives a bad impression of him somewhat. Why doesn't he sing anymore? He was cool as the sniper.

Knuckle I don't know, he kind of annoys me in a way since he's so obnoxious, but his ability is one fo the most clever powers I've seen in fiction ever. It's hilarious.

My arcs from fave to least would be York Shin > Hunters Exam > Zoldyeck > Greed Island > Heaven's Tower > Chimera Ant.

Though Nigg? Lol couldn't they have picked a better alias? It's kind of narmy if to have Gon in a wifebeater with a gold chain and headwrap yelling HEY NIGG!!! I always thought that was a silly scanslation thing but apparently it's legit lol.

So, I was just watching the 2011 version of Hanzo vs Gon. I caved, I mean, I liked Black Lagoon, I should like the new HXH. Hanzo vs Gon was one of my favorite fights from the 90s version.

The 2011 version... has a lot less fighting. That's sad. I don't get that how works. Remakes like FMA Brotherhood, Hellsing Ultimate, they usually get more animation, more fighting, don't they?

Prolly cause there following the manga more closely. Also I think its more realistic cause Gon who's completely reliant on his natural physical abilities, senses & experience in the wild is going up against a highly trained ninja warrior, he has no chance in hell. I always thought though that the point of the battle was Gon trying to pass through not giving up instead of through simple combat.

He does get clobbered in the early version though, it's just a bit longer, more animated. In this version he gets struck in the back and that's it.
