Is weird, most od discussion about shonen are about who is more powerfull that who and asspulls and overpower protagonist, none of those complain I have seen in RWBY.

RWBY doesn't have a "scaling/battle power" system, and the fights usually end up being more tactical than flashy, so those arguments never really develop. Anybody who would seriously argue "oh but Raven > Cinder > Glynda > Qrow etc etc" wouldn't really have any ground to stand on.

ex:

  • Cinder beat Raven but it was a pretty close fight.
  • Neo whooped Cinder in H 2 H but Cinder's maiden hax turned the tables.

  • Maria walked all over those bandits but one of them got a lucky shot on her.
  • Torchwick managed to stall Blake and Sun but it's clear he's no match for Blake when she's focused.

etc.

It's pretty nice.

Also stop calling RWBY a shonen before it catches on and I have to loose the hounds.

and the fights usually end up being more tactical than flashy.

Or at the very least what passes for tactical in a standard animated action series. The kind of stuff where someone can point out that the enemy's arm is a weakness that isn't protected, and then conveniently forget that fact later when being choked by that same arm and within reach of at least three different ways to cut it.

And meanwhile giants robots are made of paper mache and have a big "shield generator: please don't shoot" sign on their backs.

Also, RWBY is a shonen. Sorry, dude, it's just the facts [lol]

I wouldn't give RWBY the benefit of calling its fights "tactical". They're just nonsensical half the time, which is enough to make the other half seem nonsensical as well.

I mean the series was made by Monty, who style is "realism is a bitch, fuck off"

I will said more that fight feel like a sequence, while most of the time shonen or most anime battle are somewhat slow because it invold the chararter doing stuff and the narration explain stuff.

Wait isn't this the same show that has Blake's sword-whip-gun-sheathe used as a serious?

How is it tactical, I thought it was 100% Rule of Cool?

I wouldn’t say it’s exactly shounen because its power scaling or whatever doesn’t resemble one. Salem, even Cinder, seem out of our protagonists’ league right now.

Those are more narrative tiers which it happen more or less in every story, which is kinda diferent of power scaling.

How about we just change "tactical" to "strategical?"

RWBY tends to have strategical battles where stats don't usually determine the victor. We can't say Adam >>>>> every member of Team RWBY solely because he beat Yang, their arguably most powerful member/tank.

"Strategical" is even worse. It implies that the characters use high-level planning to achieve victory, while in reality they... don't.

[up][up]Well, Adam need to people to defead him and there some stuff like suddenly is hability to KO with one hit beint absent and forgetting is gun(like Yang) at the last moment but that is already beating a dead faunus so whatever.

It's almost like Shonen is a demographic full of stories with different genres.

TheLovecraftian Since: Jul, 2017
#62090: Nov 8th 2019 at 4:54:53 PM

It's kinda hard to define RWBY within any of those genres, though. It's kinda actiony and kinda adventurey, but it's not really either thing anymore, but then it's not a regular shonen either, if only by the merit that it's story isn't really coherent or well-thought out enough to qualify for any of the stuff we're used to seeing. It's kinda like Fairy Tail, only it hasn't gone that far downhill yet.

Really if your gonna call RWBY a shonen, at least call it a battle shonen to be more specific.

Cause Act-Age is a shonen about a girl in an acting class acting while Death Note is about a maniacal teenage genius with a God Complex killing people with a notebook.

Shonen as a demographic is varied.

...wasn't Death Note a Seinen?

That said, I agree with your point.

Nope Death Note ran in Weekly Shonen Jump right with One Piece, Naruto, & Bleach & whatever other manga that ran concurrently alongside it

So I can only imagine the magazine covers that had Light Yagami hanging with the likes of Luffy & Naruto.

I will said RWBY dosent much a shonen because the pacing and other stuff feel more western than japanise, most japanise work really A LOT on taking and character analysis, in part for older work about samurai need to wait for the perfect strike and such.

Meanwhile RWBY fight are more action sequence were everything happen at once and you are just carry away, for example a more typical Anime would have Adam unleashing a secret technique against Yang for example, and probably she pulling and asspull at the last minute.

Like Adam pulling out his Moonslice, but then Yang blocks him by just catching the blade without seeing it?

Sarcasm aside, RWBY does pick up a lot of influence from anime, battle shonen in particular, but I find it doesn't fit the mold exactly, precisely because it pulls too much from western influences to fit. But then, I don't think it's different enough to merit a different classification either, so it fits uncomfortably in a spot where it "might be a battle shonen, might not be a battle shonen" depending on the episode.

At least Avatar could be classified more easily.

[up]Yes, but it look fancy as hell.

Is pretty much a action influence Shonen which is weird to said and pretty confusing really.

in fact I said RWBY is a good exercise in what tropes belong to shonen and what belong to western shows, Cardin is a good example.

I mean, anime is clearly a massive influence on RWBY, but it's also an influence in every American family animated show this century; in turn, anime is massively influenced by American cartoons and other Western works (cf. Honest Axe).
