Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

You've talked repeatedly about movies that interest you.

We've shown them.

Even if you are there, you don't participate in the riffing.

Not to mention that it shouldn't matter if a film interests you or not. The loyal members of the coven show up regardless because they contribute to the experience. We watch whatever, it doesn't matter.

The point of the matter is that there's no point in riding in the back of this coven. It's not like the other vapid glorified circle jerks where people just talk about things that may or may not pertain to the nature of the coven. No, in this coven we actually get together and do things.

Good. I'm glad we've come to an understanding.

Just participate in the chat and make fun of the movie. We won't bite, trust me.

As long as you come to the actual sessions, we'll gladly take you in.

As long as you come to the actual sessions, we'll gladly take you in.

Just to add to this... One doesn't even have to come to all chat sessions, either. One can come late, leave early, skip certain nights entirely; it's fine for anybody to prioritize other things if they have to/want to.

We just prefer that anyone regularly visiting/posting in this thread has some actual interest in what it is we're all about (the chat and the videos). Otherwise, if one has no interest in our activities, what's there to get out of just posting in the thread?

Yeah, you don't need to come all the time. A lot of our members are infrequent attendees. I'm okay with that.

I like it better when people consistently show up, but something is better than nothing.

If you have a busy schedule, you can pick a few days of the week or so that you plan on coming. Some people only come on Fridays, for instance.

Okay, time to start the fun stuff. First up, we got more cutscenes from Limbo of the Lost, Shmorky trying his hand at making an LP video without Lowtax, a surprising find in the form of an old episode of Ghost Stories that ISN'T the one about the woman with the fear of flying, & more.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, what you want is what you get! Ben & Arthur is our featured item of the night by popular demand, and it is SO going to be worth a second look.

Why didn't you people want to watch Foodfight again?

That was awful. I now feel like I've lost the will to live...

On the plus side, you people were pretty funny.

It's all differing tastes. I hated that movie myself...

And yet I was the one to bring Foodfight to this place's attention.

I don't know what's so hard to comprehend. It's probably the worst film we've ever seen. We don't exactly want to rewatch it. I've seen it twice, Sean has seen it three times, and all those times were so ungodly to sit through.

I weep for the noble soul who stole the original hard drives that Foodfight!'s animation was stored on back in 2002. This mysterious do-gooder and stalwart champion of justice was doing humanity a tremendous service... and, still, he failed.

This still makes Foodfight the movie-equivalent of a cancerous tumor, once surgically removed, that grew back and finally killed its host.

Keeping with my current .gif motif of people getting decked, I give you the reason Ben was my favorite character in Ben & Arthur. Other than the fact that he was like the only main character that didn't murderer anyone in cold blood just because he disagreed with them.

Also I feel like the guy who plays Arthur is almost as good at comically faceplanting as Brad Sherwood. Which is pretty surprising considering the fact that he wasn't even trying to be funny.

What do you mean about the hard drives with Foodfight!'s animation being stolen? Was there actual sabotage behind-the-scenes?

[up] Yes. The story of Foodfight's production is far more interesting than the actual film.

Ben and Arthur would have been more interesting if it had been about the brother and the Christian-ish cult, which would turn out to be a cover for a secret society of assassins (which would explain their bizarro doctrines). As it is, it's a movie about some minor side characters from a better (if only slightly) film.

4x[up]Nice one. I'll be sure to add it to the Archive after tonight's movie, along with the rest of the day's new creations.

Speaking of, the first Robowar .gif of several more to come turned out really well. A true work of art!

[up][up][up]Yeah, it was originally planned for a Christmas 2003 release (possibly theatrical, given the name talent and the millions upon millions of dollars poured in by product sponsors), but the hard drives were stolen in 2002, and the entire project had to start all over. It's certainly one of several factors why Foodfight!'s budget ballooned to an insane $65 million without anything actually showing that value in the finished work.

In any case, tonight's movie was on the Suggestions List under the name Demon Island, which is also the title registered with IMDb; however Piñata: Survival Island is a commonly seen alt title.

IMDb's entire synopsis: "Teens trapped on an island are haunted by a demon hidden inside...a piñata."

Sounds like a real blast!

'The AV Club'/'Onion' article on Foodfight! is a pretty good read. I think somebody got to linking that in a discussion on Foodfight! last February, when it was first published, too. It's about the most in-depth critique of everything wrong with that movie on every possible level that I've ever come across.

BTW, I forgot to bring this up earlier when I announcing tonight's feature that for pre-show, I'm thinking of finally going with the next episode of Space: 1999 that we've been holding out on since Saturday. Unless there are serious objections to that, expect tonight's pre-show to kick off 5-10 minutes earlier than usual.
