Depends on how well this one does. Then again, Final Fantasy Degrassi High IN SPACE!!! was never one of my favourites in the series.

I never did get a chance to try out FF 8. Might be alright.

It's a decent game. They may have gone a bit overboard with the Level Scaling, though, because monsters tend to take vast jumps in difficulty when you fight them at higher levels, and a Low-Level Run is not only achievable but significantly easier in many ways.

The card-playing side-game was too random for my tastes, and too easy to accidentally sabotage until it became overwhelmingly difficult. You had to do it to get some of the best items, as well.

The story was intriguing. I think (as do many people) that they overplayed Squall's emotionally fragile loner schtick, to the point where it became hard to care about him. The game of course pulls the mandatory twist reveal explaining this, which is supposed to whip you back around to caring about him, but it fell flat for a lot of players.

These quibbles aside, it's still an excellent game with a compelling story. Just not as epically epic as VII.

I'd still like to see it on Steam, maybe along with FF 9, or even Xenogears if they can wangle it in some insane way.

8 actually has a PC release, so it's certainly possible. 9 and Xenogears, not likely at all.

It does? I may have to check that out. I never got it on PC. I wonder if it's Win7/8 compatible; that was the problem with my old copy of VII.

Xenogears would be good IF they finish the game, do a decent translation and actually put some effort into it. Otherwise I will pass. I have the original Black Disc version in my spare bedroom.

One of the many reasons why I hate Degrassi High IN SPACE!!! is that it sucked more than half the budget away from Xenogears because it went way over what Squaresoft thought it would cost and they made the criminal decision to cannibalize what would have been their best game on the PS One.

[up][up] It's not. That's the big problem. On the other hand, they actually kept the lyrics for Liberi Fatali.

The soundtrack patch for VII on the PC does restore "One Winged Angel", at least on the Steam version.

I swapped the music out for the PSX stuff anyway

I'm sure they'll find a way to slap FF 8 on there. As long as Cloud Saving behaves itself this time.

I wouldn't mind seeing VIII or IX come to Steam; preferably IX, both for the overdose of references to previous games and because I like "Melodies of Life" better than "Eyes on Me"...

Somehow you know that the time is right.

I don't know if PS2 games can be easily ported to PC, but I'd love to revisit FFX just for the sake of beating it this time.

So, I beat this game recently.

Literally the only Final Fantasy game aside from the Tactics series that I've actually played and enjoyed (possibly because the combat system reminded me of Chrono Trigger). Good job, Old!Square.

I have to say, though, the "hints" on where to go next in this game are really terrible, even by the standards of the fact that it's an old game.

[up][up] Shouldn't be too difficult provided the developers know what they're doing. Sonic Adventure 2 was ported to Steam pretty well.

@Mukora: I played it with a GameFAQs guide close to hand, not because I needed it to progress in the main plot, but because I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. 100% Completion is impossible in FFVII without a guide.

Sure feels like it.

Also Aeris in this game is funny, especially when she's picked by Corneo.

Sorry for double post but progress report:

Got Yuffie and Vincent. I'm surprised beating Lost Number gets you so many good stuff like the Odin summon and Red's final limit break. But hey, its good. Gonna try to get Aeris' last limit break too so I can get THAT achievement out of the way

Lost Number is supposed to be a very hard fight at the point when you can first encounter him. If you wait to do the fight until after the Northern Crater events, it's easy. It's also somewhat unlikely without intense level grinding that you'll get the limits for any character except Cloud trained up to the point where they can use their Level 4 item before Disc 3.

In fact, the only character that you have to do it with on Disc 1 for 100% Completion is Aerith.

Well I did it on Disc/Part 1 with a level 20 or so Cloud, Tifa and Red. It was a slight grind but I got there and had Vincent with me early.

Which reminds me I replayed Tifa's piano but no limit break came out so does that only happen on Disc 2 or later?

Yes, you can only get it on Disc 3, and both Tifa and Cloud must be in your party.

Makes sense to me. Well I did the whole Shinra ansion thing

Oh my god you know when Sephiroth throws that Materia at you and flies out like a loon? What the shit, Square I know technology was limited then but jeez.

And then I said "Oh hey free materia thanks Seph. That Seph is such a nice man I can't see how anyone would hate him"

The graphics can be laughably dated at times, yes. grin

Destruct is an interesting materia but its uses are very limited, thanks to the Useless Useful Spell phenomenon.

Oh, and a bit of advice: anything you want to do with Aerith, such as level grinding or working on her Limit Breaks, must be completed before you enter the Temple of the Ancients.

I got the Demi materia too. I might level it up for when Emerald Weapon shows up.

Otherwise, meh. Just meh on it. I've already gotten into teh habit of rotating materia sets for when I swap members out. I put an All Materia on Tifa coupled with a Cure materia for a neat heal.

You want to level all of your magic, command, and summon materia so that you can get access to the Master versions in Disc 3. It doesn't matter so much for the basic ones like Fire and Cure, because they level up so quickly that you'll have a half dozen by the end of the game, but it matters a great deal for the most powerful ones like Shield, Ultima, Comet, and Full-Cure, because of the massive quantity of AP needed to master them. Those are, naturally, also the ones you get latest in the game.

Along the way, make sure to keep your mid-level materia like Destruct equipped so they can gain AP as well; you don't want to neglect them and discover the hard way that you still have a bunch of AP to earn. Oh, and Debarrier is a very effective spell to use on some bosses, including the final one.

You absolutely want to equip as many All materia as you can, though. The reason is that when they reach Master level, you can sell them for 1.4 million gil apiece and never have to worry about cash again.

If I can find a few All materias. I forgot that Yuffie was pretty funny too so I'll use her a fair bit often.
