Mind you, I do hope for the option of playing a seedy ladies man or woman since getting laid all the time is the kind of thing which a cyberpunk noir protagonist can do.

Witcher 3 dialed it back too much I think.

Well I have been hearing rumblings about a guy named Jakie or Jackie that you work with in the demo. He's apparently the guy you see in the trailer that is just trying to eat at a food stand when two guys try to mug him.

From what I have gathered he is a merc or solo thats your friend. He can lift cars and toss em.

I also heard you can screw him. Not sure if male V can but female V can from what I heard. The NP Cs have preferences on which gender they prefer or if they prefer both. I am assuming he may be bi

I wonder if we'll have the opportunity to harvest the woman's high tech organs ourselves.

Mmmm cybernetic organs.

Some more information provided by some gaming youtubers.

  • They said the customization is fairly deep. This includes being able to customize the jacket via what color it glows and how it glows.
  • You could pick your characters childhood hero. I am assuming Johnny Silverhands will be one.
  • You could pick why they came to Night City
  • You can pick a tragic backstory
  • When you are saving the hostage from getting harvested you discover a program in her brain that apparently made her invisible to the net. Once you remove it Trauma Team shows up to help her.
  • Apparently the way you hack into people is kinda funny. You take an USB cord or USB card and jam it into them while stealthing through areas. Definitely going to play a Netrunner or Techie (or both).
  • You are fighting the Maelstrom gang in the demo
  • You are hacked by a Netrunner during the demo and get infected with a lie detection program that effects you during your speaking portions
  • An unmentioned upgrade (cyberware) can be used as binoculars.
  • A whole lot of details were put in the city.
  • I was wrong. Jackie, the guy whom helps you during the demo, is the dude with the man bun in the trailer.
  • The gangs will try to kill you if you are on their bad side. In the demo the Scavs/Scavengers (?) attack you and Jackie when your driving through the city. You have a shootout with em in cars.
  • Spider bots. Likely a techie thing that you can get
  • Tech upgrades to your guns
  • You can get an autoaim smart gun apparently
  • You can riochet bullets. I can see a lot of people being very into that including me.

Gives me flashbacks to the neck hacking from Ghost in the Shell, I hope it's like that

So you'd have the option of backstabbing them with a USB card instead of a knife?

So, can someone fill me in? Is this game based on something? My original impression was that it was an original IP but it sounds like its not based on some of the descriptions.

Based on a tabletop RPG called Cyberpunk 2020. A direct continuation of its lore if I understood correctly.

[up] Apparently seems to sidestep the last iteration of the RPG, the contentious one.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but you can use those wrist blades to hang from walls as well. So yeah, you can go full Major / River Tam on people it seems.

It's vaguely frustrating it's another 2 years likely before we see this.

Some minor backlash against it "being cyberpunk" - I won't link, but a Kotaku article talks about it. I can see SOME of the points, but overarching the commentary feels a bit forced, jaded perhaps. There's some valid points but it does seem to be less a worry that "it's not cyberpunk" - more that "Will it be as in depth as Witcher 3 was" in terms of nuance and satire / not sticking to cheap stereotypes.

Notably, the reliance on flashy gunplay and "naked ladies" in the E3 demo. My argument'd be - it's kind of part of the genre. And not using nakedness as a "titilating" point, more to show the alterations to the human form and the commodifying of humanity.

[up][up][up]It's based on Cyberpunk 2020 which was one of the works that really shaped the Cyberpunk genre early in its existence. It wasn't quite as influential as Bladerunner though

From the way they described it sounds like what you guys are mentioning. You basically stealth through and jab people with an USB cord or something like that. It sounds like you can just use it to hack people but I imagine they will give you an option to use an hack that'll kill the enemy.

And yeah I have been seeing a lot of stupid accusations of titillation or not bringing anything new to the genre. From what I have heard about the demo the nude woman you save is not there for any sexual reasons, she was nearly hacked to death by a cybernetics harvesting gang and you just get her out so you can get Trauma Team to transport her. I don't see any fucking sexual exploitation in what pretty much is the fictional equivalent of catching an organ harvesting game in the act of mutilating their victim. Some idiots are even saying Oh it will just be for women only when the devs made it clear both men and women can be nude in the game.

As for not bringing anything to the genre....really? I mean did those journalists actually see the amount of idiots that act like day doesn't exist in the Cyberpunk genre? This game is bringing more punk and color into the Cyberpunk genre which I personally love as that while works like Bladerunner, Ergo Proxy, and others are good cyberpunk works in their own right they still have very drab and muted colors in their worlds to the point it gets very boring.

Lot of people tend to forget the Cyberpunk tabletop is very heavy on punk culture. If you check out the illustrations for that they have a very pulpy look to it.

I mean, there was a bunch of non-tittilating nudity in Bladerunner 2049 - it's pretty much part of the genre, and what I've heard of the nudity in the latter two Wichter games, it seems like that nudity was used in a mature manner in those games too. CD Projekt Red has earned my trust on many of these fronts and I'll be very surprised if they slip up.

Yeah, I still am facepalming at the thought of the few sexist idiots I saw saying that the women in the trailer look too punky and saying that somehow made them sluts or whores in their delusional minds. At least my faith in humanity was somewhat restored when some folks pointed out that the very genre was named Cyberpunk and that they were morons.

Reminds me way too much of the morons whom kept saying Sombra from Overwatch isn't a cyberpunk based character because her hairstyle looks too tumblerina esc. back when she was first revealed. This is despite how that hairstyle appears on a lot on the women in Cyberpunk works and her whole schtick is pretty much Netrunner hacking with some cybernetic implants she got. Hell the female V seen in the trailer looks very much like Sombra to me, just without the highlights in her hair.

Some nerds out there really need to tone down there Know-Nothing Know-It-All attitudes. Gets really tiresome to see.

I did a quick Google search for 'punk hairstyle' and I found ones that are very similar to Sombra's in the first five images. You know, not the ones on the image search page, but the previews under 'All'. Some people just have axes to grind and will grind them whenever they see a glimmer of opportunity to do so.

For something that has "punk" in the title they do seem to forget that. I think half of these "opinion pieces" are people trying to create a narrative half the time.

There's underlying concerns, yes, if a game was marketed out of nowhere with lots of gratuitous nudity. But CDPR are a known quantity and have shown nuance and a pretty good strike around including all manner of people. The end of that Kotaku article does have a bit of "But this is CDPR so it's probably me worrying over nothing" - but that feels like a disclaimer.

I do feel that gamers, for all of gamings intricacies at involving itself around other media forms, lack a lot of wider cultural knowledge or only have superficial awareness. Or at least the tribes that attend E3 seem to.

Honestly, that should have been the article's subheader. "People concerned about sexualityin Cyberpunk - but it's CDPR, so we're probably fine."

Well, the second half would have been the bit just below the headline in a different font and smaller size. But on the whole, with good journalism you summarise both sides as soon as possible, rather than going on with one narrative for the entire article and then putting the counter point near the end, or in the article's second half, where people very often won't even get to.
