Talk about Sony stuff that isn't Hotel Transylvania here.

Really I'm starting this thread so I can continue talking with Kyun about the upcoming Harold And The Purple Crayon movie without driving the Hotel thread off-topic.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Fine.

I'd be glad to share my own treatment of a CG Harold here!

I still think Cloudy is Sony Animation's biggest hit to date. Compared to...... the Open Season movies... there isn't much to go by except the almost-as-good Surfs Up.

-wikis-

Holy crap! It's being produced by Maurice Sendak and Will Smith!

[up]Not sure how to feel. On the one hand, Maurice Sendak. On the other hand, Will Smith.

And I'd love to hear how you'd handle Harold.

I think Will Smith wants to handle the business side of movies now. Not sure how well he does that...

In a nutshell, my take on Harold is an expanded storyline where Harold is about 8, has an older brother, and a few problems- he doesn't relate well to kids his age and draws most of the time. Instead, Harold tries to bond, and be just like, his older brother, who has a similar interest in animating, but doesn't exactly understand him because of how young he is, and it doesn't help that his brother thinks he's annoying. He's depressed when his brother also goes on a middle-school trip to kick off his high school years. One night, Harold wants a moon to appear in the night sky, so he just draws one from his imagination in the air. ....... the drawing comes to life and he goes on the many adventures from the books. His powers turn out to be tangible AND are seen by his parents AND brother, who is impressed with him now! But the drawings eventually form ambitions of their own and wreck havoc in the city downtown...

[up] Pretty good idea.

Now that Sony has let the Open Season franchise die, it seems like they're quickly becoming a studio to watch out for. And the fact that they've treated my beloved Aardman Animations so nicely automatically earns them points in my book. grin

They're moving forward with that Popeye movie, having attached Tartakovsky as director.

This article also hints that the studio is very happy with Hotel Transylvania, which is probably a good sign for that film.

GENNEDY TARTAKOVSKY? POPEYE?

It's like two of my favorite things came together all at once.

Yeah. I like Popeye, but I'm not entirely sure how that's going to work.

Okay. THAT sounds like a great idea. Ghenndy making Popeye! Finally. I think we finally have a CG cartoon studio that does right to the cartoony nature of their subject matter.

I'm trying to picture CGI Popeye.

I think my brain just broke, but so long as he's not played by Robin Williams again I think I'll be okay.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

If they stick with the animation from Cloudy, I WOULD BE SO SOLD!

Count me as also being intrigued by Tartakovsky doing the Popeye movie. I hope they drag out all the old forgotten Popeye stuff (the Sea Hag, The Jeep, The Goons etc.) for it- it was just more than just Popeye, Olive and Bluto, you know!

I think they'll expand on it. Entertaining as that dynamic is, it can't carry a feature film all by its lonesome.

I'm reminded of the Samurai Jack episode where Jack, having lost his memories (because of three sirens) becomes a mild-mannered sailor, and his pal The Scotsman had to help him find and defeat them. If the Popeye movie is like that, it would be awesome! cool

Looks like Sony will be Genndys home for a while. Since the deal includes Genndy doing his own concepts, this is a good thing.

[up]Someone should tell Sony that it's best not to make anything official until after you get out of your happiness phase. Not everyone can be William Joyce.
