Yes, the original movie was not as good as the book.
But I must debate one thing: Grover's actor was cast for his acting ability. He auditioned for the role of Percy to begin with.
As someone who never read the books, the movie was just kind of...blah. There wasn't much all that good about it, but there isn't anything offensively bad.
I just wonder why no one tries the A Series Of Unfortunate Events method where they move away from fidelity in favor of skewing closer to the intended feel of the books.
A friend of mine complained about the satyr being black, but my response was just that he's a satyr. Considering what they were like in the mythology, it's not really a problem.

Not Three Laws compliant.Having read the whole book series, this is looking a lot more faithful.
Plus after The Perks Of Being A Wall Flower, I think Logan Lerman can pull off Percy a lot better this time.
Yes. Oh, yes.
RISEI'm a fan of the original book series who had no fondness for the first movie, but this trailer does make it seem like this will be a lot more faithful to the books than The Lightning Thief was. And the additions of Nathan Fillion and Stanley Tucci as Hermes and Dionysus, respectively, can't hurt either.
"And every life is a special story of its own." —The Stargazer, Mass Effect 3As someone who never read the books, the movie was just kind of...blah. There wasn't much all that good about it, but there isn't anything offensively bad.
My thoughts as well.
I've been in here saying i liked the first one cuz i liked the book, yes? Well, this trailer looks about the same, in a good way.
Thoughts before seeing trailer: Cautiously (very cautiously) optimistic.
Thoughts after trailer: ...Holy crap, this looks really good!
Clarisse! Kronos! Oracle! BLONDE ANNABETH! It's like an apology for everything they got wrong in the first movie! I'm...I'm actually seriously excited! This could be really good!
"We're home, Chewie."Seems like a solid trailer (though my comparisons are skewed after the awesomeness that was the Man of Steel trailer). I'm glad that they're finally introducing Kronos.
I just wonder how they're going to introduce the Great Prophecy and Thalia, especially because of the age change. Ah well, a stronger story arc for the film series can only help.
They've actually cast Thalia in the film which means the cliffhanger ending of her coming back to life is intact.
But yeah this is looking very good.
Despite the trailer I still don't have much hope for this. The changes to the story for the first movie are too big and retconning them would just confuse viewers.
At this point, I'm just hoping they spin it as a Two Part Pentalogy: they don't need to necessarily retcon The Lightning Thief, just downplay the odder aspects (which sadly include Uma Thurman as Medusa), maintain the series story arc from here on out, and introduce all the necessary plot points in this movie... which already seems to be the case.
The only problems off the top of my head are the missing Ares duel, and Luke's apparent competence.
How are they going to do this after not even mentioning Kronos in the first film? It's like Eragon, where they cut out so much stuff that they couldn't actually make a sequel (and that movie was awful, so who would want them to?).
"Steel wins battles. Gold wins wars."Considering how much they seem to be adding from the first book into the second movie, I think I'm just going to treat this movie as the "real" first movie and disregard "The Lightning Thief." Let's take it as one of those times when people combine the first few books into one movie, like in the Cirque Du Freak movie or the Series Of Unfortunate Events movie.
...Actually, wait, forget that I said "Cirque Du Freak movie." "The Vampire's Assistant" never happened, okay?
"We're home, Chewie."New Trailer
Hmm...yup, that furry thing with the scorpion tail definitely the Manticore. I suspected as much from the first trailer, but it was blurry and I was hoping against it. Seems they're still making a habit of adding monsters from other books into the wrong movies.
Still, I don't see anything necessarily bad so far (except maybe Dionysus being way too helpful and a distinct lack of the Princess Andromeda), so I'm keeping optimistic. And I still really love the way the bronze bulls look.
"We're home, Chewie."Okay, a book purist has arrived!
It took me 45 minutes to read the first book. I loved it and the rest of the series.
Lightning Thief pissed me off beyond belief. The ages especially. And Pierce Brosnan annoyed me, though that is partially because my mother was obsessed with him. I hated the age of the actors for Percy. Hell, I could probably have gotten past Annabeth's hair and Grover.
But the ages and the way they did everything pissed me off, especially the Ares battle. I can't even begin to list everything I hated. So I have VERY little hope for this one.
I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously. To which are you referring? To the Percy upset about the Manticore in a movie about Greek Mythology, I'll have you know that Age of Mythology had the Manticore as a unit for the Greeks so its okay by me (also the fact that Hellenic culture extended quite far into Persia so there was mixing of myths and such) I like how this series is basically in fact like Age of Mythology, Rick should have made that game's story canon.
Oh, you mean that one that diDN'T FRAKKING HAPPEN GODS OF OLYMPUS I HATE THE FIRST MOVIE TOO.
I'm kind of upset that they're using the Manticore since it wasn't in the second book, it was in the third. That seems to be a theme now: Take an obscure monster from the book (Echidna, seemingly the Agrios twins) and replace them with a more commonly-recognizable monster (the Hydra, the Manticore) even though that's entirely pointless because they're just going show up later in the series anyway, so you're just making more problems for yourself down the line.
...On the bright side, pictures have confirmed Grover in wedding dress will happen. For this I am eternally glad.
"We're home, Chewie."Plus they threw in Everybody Hates Hades for no good reason. Damn, I hate that trope...
Exactly. Which is why I said it. I just phrased it the wrong way.
I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously. To which are you referring?Today's the day, guys!
Wait, what's this? 26% on Rotten Tomatoes? Yeowch.
On another note, anyone else here want to bet that AWOLNATION's "Sail" is featured at some point in the movie?
Peace is the only battle worth waging.
Maybe I'm exaggerating, because of the fact that I actually let myself have expectations towards the Lightning Thief, while by the time Last Airbender came out, I didn't have any expectations at all.
Still, as Maridee said, although I haven't watched the Twilight movies, from what I've heard, they at least adapt the books reasonably well, which is much more than can be said of Lightning Thief.
