I know we have a thread for The King Of Fighters series, but what about other SNK franchises or games on the Neo-Geo Platform, like Fatal Fury, Art Of Fighting, World Heroes, or spinoffs and revivals like SNK Arcade Classics and Neo-Geo Battle Colosseum?

This is the topic for anything that has to do with SNK or Neo-Geo.

So: Art Of Fighting 2, hardest fighting game ever: yay or nay?

Samurai Shodown has its own thread, right?

I get the feeling this is going to be one of those more obscure threads.

But yeah, I've never played AOF2, but I've heard it's no walk in the park.

Does Samurai Shodown have its own thread?

I have the AOF Anthology. At least on that version, AOF 2 is hard as nuts. I even kicked it down to Easy mode and I still had trouble with just the first opponent.

First time I ever beat a guy, I was playing Yuri, vs. Ryo. Then after I beat him I fought... imposter Yuri.

Pet theory: Yuri had already freed herself by the time Robert and Ryo got to the place she was being held in the first AOF game.

Yep.

You even commented in it.

It's more likely that Takuma revealed himself to Yuri and let her go.

That probably is what actually happened, but I like the idea of Yuri secretly being so badass.

Man, six posts and this topic is already dead? Sheesh!

So... should I get a Neo-Geo console or not?

Well, there aren't exactly that many SNK fans here. Or elsewhere for that matter. It's kinda the underdog company in terms of fighting games.

I dunno. Would you really be getting your money's worth buying something like that after all these years?

Also, did you hear about the new Neo Geo handheld?

It wouldn't be the first time I got a console years after the fact. I'm a huge retro gamer.

Yeah, I saw that topic. It's kind of interesting, but if I'm not able to plug a custom controller into it*

, I might not see much of a point, except to legitimize the downloading of RO Ms.

Still, here's hoping oldschool SNK gets some sort of revival.

You mean as in the older IPs? Unless Metal Slug, SamSho, KOF, and their pachislot games manage to rake in some serious dough, I don't see it happening with some of their older franchises.

Eh, I'm basically just hoping the majority of their back-catalogue comes out on a compilation of some sort (preferably an actual disc one and not just as a download, though that works too I guess). Franchise revivals rarely interest me, unless the Happy Video Game Nerd tells me they're good.

Well, they've already done that (for the most part) with Fatal Fury, the Fu'un Series (Savage Reign and Kizuna Encounter), and SamSho (I think), as well as a few KOF compilations. Not sure about the rest, though.

There are collections, but they mostly consist of their fighting games. I'd like to see some of what they made besides.

I know they made Crystalis, which is awesome, and Athena, which isn't so awesome (even if the character herself became kick-ass)

Not a compilation or physical media, but they've released quite a few of their pre Neo-Geo games as Playstation Minis. With Hal 21 on the go, how the hell did the PSP not win???

So... should I get a Neo-Geo console.. or not?

If you have two kidneys to spare, absolutely.

There are many ways to get into the Neo-Geo scene, with the prices varying quite a bit. This article provides a good overview. (SuperGuns are another option if you want to go the MVS/Arcade route.)

What's a "Playstation Mini"?

I've read that some of the games they released as downloads were available on disc in Japan*

. Maybe I should hit up ebay.

What's a "Playstation Mini"?

It's a brand of cheap downloadable games for the current Playstation consoles, mostly PSP. As you can tell from the post above, Sony did an awesome job promoting it.

basically, SNK took the games featured in the physical compilation you mentioned (though there's also an handful of games that weren't featured in the collection) and released them individually for 3$ each. they can be played on PSP, ps3 and Vita.

Ah, okay. DLC isn't my thing but its nice to know these games are out there.

Wouldn't mind playing the Ikari trilogy sometime, though I somehow doubt Ralf and Clark are as badass as they are in King of Fighters.

So, what all SNK or Neo-Geo games do you guys own? My own collection consists of:

Crystalis for the NES
Garou Densetsu 2 for the PC-Engine
Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition for the Playstation
Fatal Fury Battle Archives volume 1 for PS 2
and both the Garou Densetsu Battle Archives for the Japanese PS 2

Then there's what I own on the Neo-Geo Pocket Color: Fatal Fury First Contact, King of Fighters R-2, Picture Puzzle, Pac-Man, Samurai Shodown! 2, Dark Arms: Beast Busters 1999 (a Zelda clone that's a sequel to a light gun game... whodathunkit?), and both the Metal Slug games. I think I just named half the North American releases.

The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match, The King of Fighters XI, The King of Fighters XIII, The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2, and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. All for the PS2, barring KOF XIII.

Oops, almost forgot. I do have KOF '94 on my Wii's VC.

SNK-wise, I only have The King Of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match, KOF XI, KOF XIII, and the Orochi Saga collection, all for Sony products. Kinda want NGBC, Garou, and something Metal Slug, though.

NGBC is decent enough, but it's not for everyone. That being said, I bought a used copy that was very cheap, so I didn't really waste money.

If you're going for Metal Slug, the Metal Slug Anthology for PS2 (or Wii, if you have on) is always a good start.

I'm just putting out here that Yuki of NGBC has overtaken Rock Howard as my third favorite character in SNK history (Rick Strowd and K' being the other two), which is something that I find more amusing than I rightfully should.

If you would've told me a couple of years ago that I would find a dude in a nylon one-piece jumpsuit and scarf to be cool, I would've kicked you in the face then and there.

I'd say Chun-Li. More range (taller, long legs) and more power (again, the legs), not to mention that she has more experience and seems to have an advantage in ki manipulation and speed.
