@Barkey: When I was in kindergarten, my teacher didn't like me, so she didn't punish other students for bullying me. I was seeing a therapist before I should have even known the word. For a long time, I blamed myself, but as I've learned more about the complicated circumstances I was thrust into, I've come to realize that at no point was I at fault. I simply suffered from quick judgment by, and a lack of professionalism upon the part of, an authority figure who was supposed to protect me.

I feel like I ought to press this point, because few things will drive away newbies from this site faster than a "put up or shut up" attitude.

I wish I had seen this thread/announcement yesterday.

I've been a moderator on other non-TV Tropes forums, so I will throw my hat into the ring. The important thing about being a mod is maintaining fairness and impartiality, which I think most of the mods do well at.

[edit] Wow, and I'm already negative in the length of time it took me to write the post.

I don't know your personal circumstances, but I'm very wary of people saying they were mistreated because they were disliked, as if they never had any instrumentality in how they were perceived by others. I buy that kids will bully someone for next to no reason, but not that an authority figure will spite a small child because she doesn't like him/her. I find the mentality that Barkey speaks of is conducive only to self-pity and aggravated feelings of victimhood and entitlement, not facing up to your problems and overcoming them. Perhaps Barkey's approach might intimidate some, but perhaps the lack of it alienates others?

Oh, how I wish. But I've heard enough stories to know otherwise.

Yes, that kind of thing can be used to fuel self-pity and so on, but you know, it can also actually, legitimately, happen.

If we're going to nominate banned tropers, who's willing to vote for Scrye? tongue

Actually on-topic, why do people keep voting in favor of the "duplicate, please ignore" spots?

[up] Coz people are voting him up for the lulz. Also, good job on ignoring a mod's request. And Deboss is explicitly asking to be voted down.

So good job making your point? Whatever it is?
