What...happened?

-listens quietly-

-digs the heels of his palms into his eyes- Reality hit again.

Fast-forward to two years later. Still in the infantry, Shinra empire's still going strong, and we get a mission to Nibelheim. I would have refused, really, but you don't refuse jobs at Shinra. It counts as dissent. I kept my helmet on the whole time, afraid they'd see. Saw my mother... I don't remember her much, but I think she was glad to see me. Avoided Tifa. We went up to the reactor on the mountain.... Tifa was our guide. I had to wait outside with Tifa, but Zack and Sephiroth went inside... found these things in pods, creatures that used to be human, that the company was experimenting on.... They look a bit like me.

Don't ask me how I know things I wasn't there for, I'll get to that later.

So, as you can imagine, Sephiroth and Zack are mortified... and then Sephiroth starts questioning things. Says he'd always known he'd been different, and now he might know why.... Then he found a library in an old mansion-turned-lab on the outskirts of town... and he stayed in there for four days, not sleeping. Just reading. And reading.

He read too much.

-takes another deep breath- This is so much harder sober....

He went mad. Read that he and Jenova were Cetra, a tribe that died out saving the Planet from some cataclysmic force, and that humans had stolen the Planet from him and his Mother. Which, as luck would have it, was stored in the reactor.

-looks at Lancelot- You know the next part, of course....

Burned Nibelheim to the ground. Killed every last man, woman, and child there. I... I found my mother in our house, she — she burned to death.... I... Zack had to drag me out, and I passed out from smoke inhalation... everyone was dying....

Then Zack went after Sephiroth himself.

Shirou...he's remembering his past. His hometown was burnt to the ground as well. He's the only survivor.

Had a few more than that....

I followed them... Tifa followed her father to the reactor, but he was dead, too. Masamune stuck in his back. She picked it up, but that went about as well as you'd expect it to.... He gutted her like a fish, and she started bleeding all over the reactor steps... Zack... he decided to confront Sephiroth. That also went about as well as you'd expect it to, General and strongest Soldier alive that he was... And Zack... he told me to finish him off.

I picked up his sword. He was inside with Her. Jenova. She looked... she looked vaguely humanoid, I guess, but she... -sighs- ...more on that later. He was distracted, anyway, so I gutted him like a fish, then went to go find Tifa.... She was bleeding so bad, I thought... I didn't know if she would make it or not, and I tried to stop the bleeding.... And then it turns out he wasn't even dead yet. Came back holding Jenova's head. I followed him, but he turned around and — -shows them the scar- Right through the heart. So I clawed my way down the blade. Pushed it all the way in, just to get close enough to kill him. I figured I was going to die anyway, from a wound like that, so....

I overpowered him, I don't know how, so don't ask. What I did could have only been pulled off by someone enhanced, never someone weak like me. Threw him and his damn sword into the reactor, killing him. Then I passed out from blood loss, and....

-shudders-

I... the company... they found out Sephiroth was dead, but... they wanted a replacement... and as luck would have it, there were two handy samples bleeding to death in a reactor, one of which nobody would miss, and the other who could easily be declared killed in the line of duty. And...

-takes a few deep breaths- ...Woke up in a hospital bed... tied to a hospital bed. That should have been my first clue. Nobody would talk to me but Zack.... Then they started to... there were two parts; mental conditioning, and th-the physical.... For the first year, they focused o-on... mako enhancements and... surgery. Sometimes they gave us anesthetic. Sometimes they didn't. An important part of an efficient weapon, after all, is high pain tolerance, and what better way than to....

-takes another deep breath- Mental conditioning and physical conditioning, they merged into one exercise after the first year. They wanted puppets. After the first year, they started doing something else to us, we didn't undrstand what at first, but... they wanted another Sephiroth. Zack was the puppet the company wanted, but I... I was the failure, the one they lost control of to an unforseen variable. Jenova. She started whispering to me, she said she could make the pain stop, I-I didn't....

Zack was there the whole time. For four years —five, really — he was all I had in the world. I... I had no home, no family, the only person I really knew who was my age, I presumed her to be dead... and he was the only one who used my name. He meant the world to me, and not just because of who he was. If I had anything else taken from me, I didn't know what I'd do.... It was too much, I guess.

We... we had tanks they kept us in, after we tried to break out of the cells... this thing was written on the outside of mine. -shows them the tattoo- Says "Property of the Shinra Science Department". For four years, that's all I was to everyone but Zack.

...He wasn't just the only thing I had, he was everything I had.

Not really. It gets much better. That was just a rough spot. I'm fine.

They... after the fourth year, they... DNA phase from Jenova was pretty much complete. I was in a vegetative state. A combination of mako poisoning and her trying to take over. That was... that was when I unofficially became this thing. -gestures to himself- I still looked human, sure, but... well, later.

They dropped the security on my tank after I became a vegetable. It's not like I was going anywhere, and the systems were getting expensive, due to recent budget cuts. Zack broke us out a month later, and he spent an entire year dragging me around. I wouldn't wake up, and he... he could have left me and started a life of his own, but he... a case like that, there was virtually no chance of recovery. And he talked to me for an entire year as though I could hear him. It killed him inside, but he just flashed that stupid grin as usual, talked about how when I woke up, I could see the sky again.

-rests his head in his hands for a moment, then looks up-

We almost made it to Midgar, you know. We could have hidden there. We... there was a truck. Hitched a ride. You could see it in the distance, even though it had started raining. He kept talking to me in the truck ride over, about how...how when we reached Midgar, we'd be mercenaries.... I-I... he was so enthusiastic about it, I must have heard him... I don't know....

It started raining. We were ambushed. They were waiting for us, and he just dumped me by a rock, he went to fight them, he knew, he had to know he was going to —

In the end, we almost made it. Just three of them, but they shot him so full of holes he shouldn't have even been standing. They unloaded their entire guns into him, and I... I woke up, then. I couldn't see the sky, it was raining so hard, and I could move and they kept shooting him and I should have saved him a-and — -bites his tongue-

They left... declared him dead and me missing.... And he — he couldn't even speak, he was so full of holes, and neither could I, it had been an entire year — he just looked at me, and I couldn't even say goodbye in time, he.... I picked up his sword... that damn sword, he was always so proud of it.... I realised that bit of him was all I had left, and at that moment, I would have given anything for it to have been him that lived, because he was everything I wanted to be, all I had, I couldn't lose him... so I didn't. I made myself someone else, because I hated myself so much. I made myself into Zack.
