Full disclosure - I’m planning to pitch an RP plot where the intro would be impossible with the Room in space and I can’t think of an alternative way for it to start. But it isn’t just that, I also just feel this is really limiting in general.

I have to say I'm against this idea, now that Random brought it to my attention. I was sort of indifferent, but wary, before that. Random's point made me realize that it's not the best idea as far as I can tell.

Not to mention that, thinking about it now, I don't really think it's necessary? Most of the events in the RP aren't even confined to the Room and the city. It's all about the plots, so it feels unnecessary to change (or more accurately, erase) a setting that's more of a waiting room in practice than a real place our characters deal with most of the time.

The RP's different enough from the FG as is, IMO. The FG is for interaction, and the RP is for plots. And we just went through all of the trouble to change the FG, so changing the RP as well feels a little overboard to me.

I mean... I guess, in the end, if more people vote for the RP to have that change then I can't fight it. I just think it's a bad idea, and that it's limiting plots, interactions, characters' lives, among other things as Random said.

The bold is for emphasis (and to make sure my opinion's clear). I'm not upset, but I'm pretty concerned about the idea.

Also, I was bottom-paged, and I wanted to make sure people would be able to go back and check.

I mean, on one hand I love the idea fo the room becoming a flying spaceship traveling universes.

But on the other hand What Random said might be limiting on some stuff.

Also what Crystal said too.

BTW, shouldn't we bring this up in the Discord? A lot of people might not be aware of this discussion.

I didn't even know until I happened to see that the thread had a new post in the my thread watch list.

wao space not even linking it in the discord wao

But for legit counterpoints, I also raise legit counterpoints:

  • We're in space for, like, roughly two weeks at a time in between plots, and I don't see how interactions would get stifled given how short of a time that is
  • If we want city interactions, I say it would be much easier to just try them in the FG, since again we're down on the ground for roughly two weeks so any particular subplots don't last for very long
    • (i also do not know who bolo is im sorry, but i feel [up] that point still stands)
  • Being in a cramped, closed interior would help everyone get close to each other again quicker, which is kinda of something which would be helpful for in a straight along plot. Sometimes we do get rest moments to get closer, but we don't always get the proper chance to build in character bonds as naturally
  • If you need the plot to start on ground, again, I already suggested that we just handwave that the roomship plain crashes back down for everything to start

It might feel a bit contrived to say "oh shit, now the room is on a TARDIS spiral back down to earth, oh shit now the plot's starting," but it doesn't really feel that farfetched to me. Anyone got any other issues?

OK, fair enough for the first three points.

But I still can't really agree with the idea of contriving the crashing thing. Plots are meant to have some form of reason. To contrive something like that would be cheap, and in the FG I'm more OK with it because of the nature of it.

Even when I had the Room end up on top of Card Capital (Which looking back at it now, was a horrible idea), there was a reason it ended up there (Not that I ever got to tackle it).

It's just something I honestly don't like the idea of, and it would sincerely screw up potential plots.

i feel as if putting everyone in constant travel would work better if this was like an ongoing story thread, but the way it's set up kind of makes a Cramped Hubworld in Space more of a hindrance than a Boone , as said before

Also... I admit, I have a character I hope to use in the future that wouldn't be staying in the Room (Or, well... I don't think?). Their interactions would be extremely limited because of this...

As in, only sucked in with a plot. And I wouldn't be able to do things I had planned with him in between arcs because the Room would be in space, and he'd have no way to get there.

my opinion is probably the least valid here but since i was in the rp for like half a day, i think any kind of big change is a bit unnecessary? i don't think the current way was stifling any kind of creativity the way the old fg used to be. if anything, the new rp thing would probably do that, actually. if its gonna make it harder to start plots, even a little, then it shouldnt be used

I kinda like the idea of limiting the rp area. We could always say the roomship need to land planet side to get new supplies.

They can't for the life of them understand why nobody liked being ruled by a group of manic depressive demigods - 4chan

i'm on the fence- on the one hand, it is a bit limiting as a location in terms of it being a flying ship.

You can change how big the ship is, but it does limit the creativity of how people get to plots.

However this isn't to say that I'm against the idea entirely.

Considering how short the time frame between plots is, maybe the answer really is just to nuke the rp's town.

It allows for approaching egg carriers, or trains, or what have you- without first stipulating "oh we had to land"

it shortens the amount of space inbetween rp plots for characters to be around to try and foster those bonds, but not too much as to be 'claustrophobic' i guess?

sort of operate on the same assumptions as s1 fg.

Certainly for me, i have felt in my time in the rp, that it was hard to build those character bonds between plots after all.

[up] Are you sure it'd still allow for that sort of thing in space while constantly moving? Like Random said, his plot idea's absolutely stuck if we do this. There's apparently no other way for him to get it started than what he has.-

A lot of arcs might be lenient enough on how characters get involved, but others just wouldn't be able to work in the new format. Not to mention that people have plots they've been sitting on for a while. To make them have to suddenly change it in the event this happens is rather frustrating, and I can imagine it causing problems.

Not to mention, as I said before, it'd also potentially cause problems getting back to the Room.

And, once again, it'd completely kill my ideas for a certain character unless the person I'm working together with to make him possible figures out a workaround...

...Which I'm thinking won't really be possible.

Plans included my character showing up, trying to steal something, and then fleeing. Being in space as a ship makes it harder for him to have the advantage of surprise to actually get in and steal something.

i'm not saying turn the room into a spaceship.

i'm saying, keep it as a room in the middle of a forest, on flat ground.

[up] Oh, oops. I'm sorry. I guess I got a little carried away... ^^;

In that case, I think I can agree a bit more. Still worried about businesses, but that's better than going into space.

We effectively get the same bonuses as what people were talking about, without making plots more difficult.

I would be in favor of this IF they stay in the same place on the ground. No space travel.

honestly thats fine with me as a solution, i'm not interested in It Being In Space as much as i am It Being In A Way That Differentiates It From The Fg and Fosters Closer Char Interactions, which is more important for a team that does stuff than for a city

Hmm... I totally get all these counterpoints against the roaming roomship, but I'm still in favor of at least a more dymanic room. If not constantly flying through space, then at least something that keeps jumping around or something.

One of my main points for a moving Room is that it's a lot easier to digest plots starting up IMO. I don't know if this is just me, but "something sucks up people from the Room to the plot's world" seems a bit old. Something like a roaming Roomship would shake it up for the better, since it provides other ways to get to the action.

#509695: Jan 22nd 2019 at 10:40:25 AM

[up] Maybe I'm not understanding, but I'm not really sure how it'd make starting those types of plots any easier?

Honestly, doesn't the Room end up moving around anyway? I don't know how Random started Fun is Infinite (As I joined a bit later on having Aichi grabbed from his dimension), but I don't think it was anything as random as "popping up in another world"? And actually, wouldn't moving around just basically do the same thing?

And yes, I admit I had the Room do that with We Are Vanguards! but there was a legitimate reason it was brought there. The entity that brought them there wanted Aichi and his friends because it was lonely, and Aichi was the one person that was nice to him during that dream vision he had during the plot pitch (I just realized that you never actually saw that document I had planned out for that whole thing, but Daisy and I actually had a lot planned out...). On top of having gained the Phantom Ruby's power (Yes, it got a shard of the Phantom Ruby after Fun is Infinite), it gained the ability to do stuff like that.

I'm digressing, but I feel like as long as there's a reason for them to show up there, then it's not a problem.

I mean I guess I haven't really been in enough arcs to really see a pattern of how plots gets started up, but I don't really see the problem with that unless it's completely random.

Thinking on it now, like... this just seems like kind of an unnecessary change without too much benefit? Especially with so much disagreement.

Also I like the style the last few RPs have had for starting better than just teleporting, just saying.

oh no sweat!

imo how people travel to the new plot is more of a matter of, the plot gm's personal preferences, rather than a function of where the room itself is at

its always gonna be at least a little bit of a contrivance, but that's just necessary to get to the actual meat of the plot

[up]the benefits have already been stated, tho. and we've found an agreement that satisfies the concerns... i dont really see how its unnecessary.

Rando's plot taking place on the same planet as the Room wasn't a bad touch. But IMO it sort of makes it difficult to suspend disbelief if other plots start doing the same thing, since it sort of feels like "man, what are all these evil organizations and different worlds doing touching borders?"

Though that does give me an idea for a more dynamic Room. Like, it might not necessarily be flying through space 25/8, but if it ends up sitting on different planets between plots it'd be easier to kick off such plots like Rando's where hostile forces approach the Room and you have to pursue them across this brand-new world.

Heck, we could have fun with the biomes involved in each planet. It doesn't have to be set ahead of time, we could build it up the same way we built up the forest and then the city. And if we like where it's gone, we could agree to keep the Roomship landed there for the next plot or two.

(sorry if i'm rambling, i'm vomiting all the points i can think of since i was doing morning routine/commuting during the meat of this actual debate)
