I know some profs in Canada who are "worried" that the tensions between Canada and India are a make or break kind of things with cooperation in the Indo-Pacific/FOIP.

[up][up][up]Unique as in? The conspiracies I am aware of tend to be general xenophobic or ultranationalistic shit like something something muslims and/or British destroyed/ suppressed ancient legacy/ monuments/ advanced knowledge hinted in religious texts, real origins( like the out of India theory nonsense), foreign nations/groups are trying to suppress India's potential, Nehru and/or his successors covering up legacy of rivals like Bose, or hiding muslim atrocities in favor of "anti hindu" activities etc. Nothing particularly different from other ultranationalist or ultra religious inspired conspiracies to my knowledge.

[down]No offense taken whatsoever. I just feel like Indian nationalists (or even moderate Indians sometimes) of all kinds have a tendency to exaggerate their "uniqueness", to the point of spouting complete nonsense sometimes about their culture and society.

[up] Well as I said it is to be taken with a grain of salt. So you can probably just ignore my babbling. I do not even remember it properly, it was just something that came in my mind when Indian conspiracies were mentioned. Perhaps it was a mistake to even post it. I hope I have not offended you somehow.

I don't see how it was offensive. It certainly is a uniquely unhinged form of ultra nationalism, probably has a lot to due to the fact that the Indian government has a lot of control over their news media. So there's a lot of propaganda and disinfo pushing Modi 's agenda.

Which has nothing to do with Canada except now some of these people are accusing Trudeau of conspiring with Sikh terrorists.

[up] I do not either, that is why I was asking instead of apologizing. Thing is that I brought up something that I remember reading on an internet forum. So not exactly a reputable source, even I do trust the people there somewhat. Combined with the fact that xyzt lives in that country, I was perhaps overly worried that it may come off as ignorant. Thought you seem to agree that it is uniquely bizarre. Anyway, as you say we are very much off-topic, and I'm only embarrassing myself here. So I propose we just abandon this line of discussion with this explanation.

House Speaker Anthony Rota apologizes after inviting man who fought for Nazis to Parliament. Apparently he didn't notice that Yaroslav Hunka was fighting the Soviet Union as part of the Waffen-SS.

Interesting stuff. CBC made a report that for Chinese operations against the so-called fugitives (some did commit crimes abroad and were wanted by other countries), Canadian law enforcement did assist their Chinese counterparts.

In recent years, some people began to question this as some of the wanted persons who got sent back to China were disappeared even after Beijing made promises that they won't be executed or tortured and sent to a black site.

There's a reported instance where a supposed witness (a woman named Tao Mi) contacted a Canadian attorney and swore that her son was being threatened with harm from Chinese agents (likely MSS) in the early 2000s in order to get a fugitive back. The lawyer said that he last saw the witness 20 years ago and recalled that he was told if the witness talked to him and if Chinese public security police found out about it, she'll be disappeared.

[up][up] The problem isn’t that the Liberals are “too far left” (they are not left).

The problem is that they’re failing to solve the country’s most crucial problems (a massive shortage of housing and a health care system that’s collapsing).

I do think that we need higher taxes on the rich (e.g. equalizing the income and caputal gains taxes, raising corporate tax rates after Harper cut them) in order to fund current spending. But blaming inflation on anything other than the fallout from COVID is silly; and COVID was an unprecedented situation that demanded fast, drastic, and not especially finely targeted action in the wayof income support. We literally slammed on the brakes and the gas of the economy at the same time, because we lacked other options; no surprise it had some consequences.

But housing is the heart of the cost of living crisis.

True. Heard from someone I know that Canada's in a recession right now(?).

Someone can correct me. Been applying for jobs in NATSEC in Ottawa for a while now.

Yeah, and there is a major problem with no-one is coming at it from the left much (Jagmeet Singh is pretty quiet) and Pierre Polieve keeps on pointing out the problem, and pretending like he has a solution (he doesn't, but unfortunately it seems to be getting him somewhere).

[up][up]I don’t think we’re in a recession; GDP has been fairly level for the last while (and GDP is what’s used to determine recessions), and employment remains high.

The problem is that prices have gone up - housing prices have risen hugely since the pandemic - while the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Been hearing about that. Not sure on arguments that Ottawa ought to step in to resolve the housing problem aside from limiting buying houses to Canadians or P Rs who are going to be Canadian.

[up]But...but...what about my five giant vacation homes in different parts of the country which coincidentally are making bank off the housing market? Where will I stay on the (hypothetical) occasions I visit Canada?

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the rich international businessmen?

Galadriel Since: Feb, 2015
#5798: Nov 13th 2023 at 4:47:59 AM

I agree; however, it’s not just an international-investor problem. There’s also lots of well-off Canadians with investment properties, plus a general shortage of housing stock due to lack of building of enough low-cost rentals over the last few decades.

Extra taxes on empty homes are essential. Vancouver’s had them for several years - they stabilized (but didn’t substantially lower) prices for a few years before the pandemic set everything wild again.

Lots of new building, and greatly cutting down on single-family zoning to allow more multiunit properties, is also essential.

We desperately need higher taxes on the rich, the problem is that inflation, inc. in housing prices, is driven by the incomes of the rich rising, while everyone else’s real incomes stagnate or decline.

I mean in terms of cost of living the price of food rising is also pretty serious like housing prices are ridiculous but food is also quite expensive for most people to manage. Of course that is happening pretty much everywhere and I'm not sure what you would do for it (so no "Just get rid of the carbon tax", would do very, very little, despite what Polieve insists)

Galadriel Since: Feb, 2015
#5800: Nov 15th 2023 at 3:19:07 PM

Food prices are going up in part due to extreme weather caused by accelerating climate change (also due to the increased oil costs in 2022 due to Russia invading Ukraine, which increased transport and fertilizer prices), so scrapping the carbon tax would be a move in the precise wrong direction. For example, apparently the hurricane a while back did a number on potato crops in the Maritimes, and the heat dome of 2021 hit the prairies hard.

They could stop letting the monopolists at the dairy board jack up cheese prices continually, though.
