Hey yes, just a curious question but who is your favourite PM of Great Britain/United Kingdom since Walpole.

Mine is obviously, Clement Atlee who created the NHS, navigated the UK through the post war period and expanded the welfare system.

[up] Mind if I ask why?

(I'm going for Clement Atlee on the welfare angle.)

I can only really speak of the three most recent, in which case Cameron seems quite good (dunno if that is the same domestically, but outside of that, I've found him mildly impressive).

Historically, whoever was PM in 1935 and whoever was PM in 1947.

Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...

Attlee for reasons already given.

[up] That would be Ramsay MacDonald (1924-24 and 1931-35), Stanley Baldwin (1923-24, 1924-1929 and 1935-37) and Clement Attlee (1945-51) respectively.

Although I'm biased as I don't care for the Conservative party at all, but his governments cuts are pretty shitty.

I thought Blair was fairly amusing and entertaining, but I know little of his actual ability to govern.

Whoever was PM when the American Revolution happened is a raging idiot. I don't specifically recall the guy's name, but...

Churchill, thought he screwed up in other areas of office.

Blair's honestly a quite a mixed bag, but in the end the bad outweighs the good imo.

Attlee.

Blair is one of my least favourites, as is Thatcher.

Whoever was PM when the American Revolution happened is a raging idiot. I don't specifically recall the guy's name, but...

Frederick North. You'll be pleased to know that he resigned afterwards following a vote of no confidence.

I don't know enough about the various Prime Ministers to say who was the best.

However, I think I'm going to throw in a vote for Neville Chamberlain. He did the best he could at a time when it being Prime Minister was a harder job than usual, and he doesn't deserve the bad reputation people have given him.

Oh, I'm not surprised, given that he lost a gigantic chunk of the Empire.

What a jackass. Not even for being vaguely dickish to the colonies (because we were also vaguely dicish in return) but for not doing the simple shit that could easily have won him the PR war long before it turned into an actual shooting war.

By the way, I'm not surprised the British Tropers are saying Atlee is their favourite PM

Clement Attlee for reasons already given. Although David Lloyd George deserves credit for creating the precursor to Attlee's welfare state.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)

Harold Wilson deserves a bit of credit, as well. Legalisation of abortion, abolition of capital punishment, decriminalisation of homosexuality, entrance to the European Community...

[up][up] Some would say that the credit for most of those really go to Roy Jenkins. But Wilson gets credit for keeping the UK out of Vietnam while keeping the USA in Britain.

Plus he helped popularise HP sauce.

Did Brits ever get a good one since Atlee?

'Cause all I can see looking back a fair while are union-busters, nanny-staters and Moral Guardians.

I said since Attlee. Churchill (the bits worth mentioning) was before him. Churchill gave great speeches and was an inspiring leader during wartime, but he sucked as a peacetime PM.

Churchill wasn't great during his second period of office and Godwinned Atlee in 1945.

Wilson did all he could to liberalize Brit society: He was an awesome PM.
