As per the cleaning up the glasses tropes discussion, I'm proposing that Nerd Glasses be renamed to Anime Nerd Glasses, since the current name is frequently confused to be about nerd characters wearing glasses. A new article that is currently in the YKTTW, Smart People Wear Glasses, is awaiting the name change of this trope and Geeky Glasses before being launched. For background information on this project, see the cleaning up the glasses tropes discussion. Any thoughts on the rename?

I believe I was the one who originally suggested this, so I'd be in favor.

Is it just limited to Anime, or is it a Japanese thing? Does it appear in Japanese live-action works? (I suspect the answer is no, but I just wanted to check before chiming in with my approval.)

As far as I can tell it's not exclusive to anime, just the majority of its uses are from it- the second sentence of the trope's description says "Glasses in anime, manga, comics and animation usually come in four forms". The trope is highly misused, and a lot of the examples aren't actually what the trope is about, so I think that most of the examples oustide of those four categories don't actually belong on that page; how many characters in live-action shows do you see wearing opaque glasses?

[up]Yeah and even western animation doesn't really have this, I don't think.

Hmmm... Maybe then we need something that describes the physical properties of the glasses rather than tagging "anime" onto it.

Considering that Western Animation examples are listed, I don't see how you can say that Western Animation doesn't have these. Consider poindexter.

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to think that despite what the first line says, this trope is simply about Coke-Bottle-Glasses. Maybe there is a certain amount of stylistic licence in depicting them, but it is still coke-bottle-glasses.

Basically these are (usually huge) white Opaque Lenses (sometimes with a swirly inside), giving a character a dumb look and used to indicate someone is a dork (sometimes it's a temporary treatment wherein the glasses look normal most of the time and only turn into this when the character is acting stupid). Honestly I think the description and picture on this could use some work here too. On the glasses thread there was a much better picture provided by someone showing "regular" and "dork glasses" on the same person.

Eh, there might be some instances of this in western animation but "bug-eyed magnifying eye glasses" is more common in the west, I think.

Incidently, a lot of the examples to be cut. Clark Kent's glasses most certainly do not qualify.

Yeah, now that I come to think of it, the stylized representation of these would be hard to do in a live-action work. Though I can't help but think I saw one once, somewhere. But even so, Tropes Are Flexible, so I'm good with the proposed name.

All the glasses trope have a lot of shoehorned examples. That was thanks to bad names and a lot of missing tropes.

Supporting the rename. I'd also be good with Opaque Nerd Glasses.

How long does this need to be up/how much of a consensus needs to be reached before the rename can move forward? I haven't spent much time in the Trope Repair Shop; I only made these threads because nobody else was getting around to it, so any guidance would be appreciated. smile

Honestly, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few nevers.

In this case, I don't think anyone is arguing that it doesn't need to be renamed, so the next step is to set up a crowner vote for picking the new title.

These images I posted in the last thread.

While the big circular glasses are a sign of being nerdy when they are opaque it's Super Nerd when clear it's Meganekko, notably they have to be this big to cover anime eyes [lol].

Another one who switches back and forth it's Tsubomi in Heartcatch Precure she only wears them at home (implied she wears contacts at school and in Magical Girl form.) They go opaque all the time like when she is flustered or in flowers nerd mode.

I don't know why you keep posting stuff on specific examples, Raso. Everyone here realizes that the opaque style is the one associated with nerds; that's why Opaque Nerd Glasses seems to be the favorite for a new name.

Do these really have that much presence in Western works? I'm not familiar with any that use them.

Edit: [down]Whoops, didn't notice that.

I think the Bug Eyed Glasses is more common in western works. they are coke-bottle thick, big and magnify the eyes to huge size, or only show pupil dots, the white taking up the entire lens. It's related but I think it's its own trope. Very rarely, if ever, are the pupils masked entirely by white in western works.

Yeah, now that I think about it, wasn't this supposed to be split into the western Big Hornrimmed Glasses version and the eastern Round Opaque Glasses version? Geeky Glasses is something else (being renamed to Geeky Glasses Plot). I'm not seeing where the Big Hornrimmed Glasses version (and examples) go?

I would just place the Big Hornrimmmed Glasses as a mention in the description of Smart People Wear Glasses.

If this type is pretty much unique to Japan, perhaps we should call it Opaque Anime Nerd Glasses as a mixture of both options?

Smart People Wear Glasses doesn't seem like the same thing to me at all. They can wear any sort of glasses, and being smart doesn't necessarily equate to being geeky (though I admit that many works treat them as the same thing). Scientists often wear small granny glasses perched on the end of their nose. The nerds wear the big, hornrimmed, super-thick glasses.
