Brought up in the Trope Repair Shop, we need to take out the in-jokey Understatement references. People are using it to make any given example "witty" rather than actually using the trope.
It's is extremely excessive, by early calculations there is a 95% misuse rate in that regard. But don't worry, the actual number to fix seems to be less than 9,000 (about 8700).
{Note, as of 12:30 am September 19th, the tally is down to 4228; We've gotten over halfway.}
{Note 2: as of 8:37 pm September 29th, it's down to 2412}
{Note 3: as of 6:16 Am October 3, there are 1868 wicks remaining. If the original assessment of ~90% misuse turns out to be correct, there will be between 800 and 900 good wicks left when we're done.}
{Note 4: As of 2:50 pm, October 6th, there were 1079 wicks remaining.}
{Note 5: as of 8:58 am on October 10, there were 729 wicks remaining. The entire list had been scrubbed. 111 of that 729 are those that a software glitch counts even though the page it's supposedly on no longer exists.}
{Note 6: Fast Eddie has modified the wick counter so that it no longer counts the dead namespaces "JBM" or "Crowning *". This killed off 75 of the phantom wicks remaining, for a final tally of 655 good wicks remaining of 8700+ original wicks}

And here we are one year later. Only 2859 wicks to clean up... this may take a while regardless.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.X-Z cleaned up, except for the X-Men franchise because I generally don't touch Marvel stuff. I'd prefer if someone more familiar with the work cleans up any Marvel-related articles.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I went through the X-men occurrences; three were sinkholes, the others were legitimate listings in the trope lists or legitimate potholes in other trope entries.
So X to Z is done.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.What are you counting as a "legitimate pothole" here?
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.In this case, they were in quotes:
Character: "something about the situation"
Wolverine: "[pothole to Understatement] Serious understatement of the situation."
Wolverine's line was an Understatement in the work, not the editor commenting on something they added themselves.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Aa-Am cleaned up, except for the Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD pages and the AlexSora89 sandbox page.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.An-Ar cleaned up. One Marvel page (Ant-Man), but I checked and it's a legitimate usage of the trope.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.As-Az cleaned up.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I'll be able to restart this once I get moved into the new house a month from now.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Your ongoing efforts on this are greatly appreciated @bwburke. Is the new misuse slowing down at all?
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.It appears to be slowing down, but not quickly enough.
The problem is, I missed six months due to a real-life move, and there were still a lot of wicks, which made it appear to new tropers as if it were acceptable.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.~3000 wicks at present. I have nothing better to do with my time, so I'll do some work here.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica!A's are done.
Migrated to Chloe Jessica!(Two more months without any replies. This is taking a while.)
I'll go reverse-alphabetical to speed things up. X-Z redone, except X-Men which Madrugada already knocked out a few months ago.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Slooowly working my way through the Bs.
Edit: Done.
Edit 2: Wait, are we not supposed to remove potholes if they're in quotes from the work? Oops.

Fangs of the relentless thousandQuotes at the top of a page don’t get potholes. I don’t know if that’s the case for quotes in the body of the example/trope lists...I know I’ve potholed plenty of those.
Bumping this to avoid a New Year's purge.
Are we still going ahead with the cleanup?
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Reverted the addition of an Understatement pot hole in a page quote that seems to be a potshot at the show on CriticalResearchFailure.Game Theory Web Show:
Purge-avoidance bump again. Is this project dead?
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Hold on, this is live again? I should probably set up an alert for when this post gets new posts.
I've done it once, I've done it twice, and I can do it again. I probably won't be able to really get into a cleanup groove until November, but I'll throw my hat in once again.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.I'll get to work on the Cs.
Edit: Whoops, forgot to mention that I cleaned them up. I'm still a little unclear on what we should do when the pothole is in a quote from the work itself, so I just left 'em be.

Fangs of the relentless thousandIf the pothole is a) from a work, and b) actually understatement, then it's a correct pothole and should be left in. Note that b) is just as important - I've seen numerous cases where the line of dialogue is "This is an extremely bad idea" and someone potholes Understatement to it, when it very blatantly is not understatement.
EDIT: I'm going from the bottom up at the moment, so currently going through YMMV entries (side note: people love to use sinkholes to Understatement in regards to Internet Backdraft... there are some big problems there). One I hit on that's a bit questionable (in YMMV.The King Of Fighters) is how to treat people potholing it to anything that could be deemed Word of God. On one hand, the quote in question is properly using it and it's not simply the editor working it to be cute. On the other, it's the creator and not the work itself. Thoughts?
EDIT 2: Putting that above note to the side for now, starting from the bottom, cleared through YMMV.Stephen King. Next up is YMMV.Star Trek S 3 E 7 Day Of The Dove.

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.Cool, thanks for clearing that up for me. As for potholing Word of God stuff... My opinion is to leave it in unless it's being used as an insult or something, like in
I don't know if there's an official policy about it though.
Fangs of the relentless thousandAs a side note, you may find that there are ghost wicks here and there (for example, YMMV.Pink Floyd supposedly has a link to the trope, but I couldn't find it).
Taking a break for a bit; I've done YMMV G-Z; YMMV.Foster The People is next.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.
Oh, wow. I didn't realize this had stalled when I disappeared. I'll see if I can get it going again.
