That game reminds me of all the bad control mechanics that used to plague a lot of games back then, and it was considerably worse in that game since a ton of the enemies were the speedy types, not shambling zombies. The way the story could branch off was annoying too, because there was absolutely no clue as to when or where the plot points could be at.

'Parasite Eve' Trademark Filed Under Square Enix in Europe Looks like we might be getting a new Parasite Eve game.
One that doesn't suck raw egg like TB?
Mileena MadnessThird Birthday is an amazing accomplishment.
Sleazy, infantalizing, and craps on canon all at once in a game which had previously been sexy, empowering, and reasonably consistent.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Actually didn't know this existed. Cross-posting from the Chatterbox thread:
Don't freak out, but...
Gematsu has just learned that Square Enix trademarked the term "Symbiogenesis" on October 13th, 2022.
According to Wikitionary, symbiogenesis is "the merging of two separate organisms to form a single new organism."
For the crowd thinking "yeah, so?": It just so happens that the concept of symbiogenesis is the basis for the story of Parasite Eve, the horror novel made more famous due to its horror JRPG adaptation from Square Enix.
Parasite Eve remaster or remake confirmed?
But since PE has some trademark thing going on (hence why the third game on PSP couldn't be called Parasite Eve 3 and they had to improvise by calling it The 3rd Birthday), it might have to be called Symbiogenesis so that it gives people some hint that it has to do with the PE games from PS1?
New stuff from here on out:
AestheticGamer, horror game Tweeter extraordinaire, has chimed in about this, suggesting that while Square Enix can't use the Parasite Eve name without getting the okay from the book's author, using Symbiogenesis might be Square Enix's way of bringing back PE without having to jump over legal hurdles. (A bit petty, but what are we supposed to do?)

If they do plan to do a new game, they should do themselves a favour and pretend game three never happened.
Start from scratch and all that.
Or maybe churn out the cash to get back the book licence again.
One Strip! One Strip! What are you talking about. There WAS no third game.
The first Parasite Eve is still up there with Square's greatest masterpieces, so here's hoping a revival is around the corner.
Of course Square's been throwing everything at the wall lately (We got a new Valkyrie game! And a new Star Ocean game! And a Live A Live remake! And whatever the hell Diofield Chronicle is!) so this is actually pretty believable.
Bleye knows Sabers.I don't know how much stock to put in this.
I mean, as far as my research goes, Parasite Eve is a licenced property, and as far as I know Square lost the licence in the early 2000s. That's part of the reason that The Third Birthday turned out the way it did, because Square could only use the parts they had created and thus owned.
I mean, maybe they got the licence back somehow? Or maybe they'll do their own legally-distinct version that they own outright?
"If you are going through hell, keep going." - Winston ChurchillGetting serious, brings up a good point. Would they be willing to get the license again? Is it particularly expensive?
Like, are the Parasite Eve novels even a big deal anymore? Maybe they could just buy the rights whole hog?
Of course, they probably aren't willing to do that, otherwise that non-existent third game would have never been a thing....even though there is no third game.
One Strip! One Strip!I mean if you go back to what kicked off this topic again the name of the new game (Remake?) Is like to be "Symbiogenesis" not "Parasite Eve" which kinda sucks because Parasite Eve is a fucking awesome title.
And the thing is Square did make up most of the stuff themselves. Very little from the original story was used, all the characters, monsters and events where 100% Square. The novel was just background lore basically. The name (Such an awesome name...) was really the biggest take.
Bleye knows Sabers.I was under the impression that the bulk of everything was SE doing and only the name and a few details came from the novel.
I've also read that Square renewed the rights to the name in the American market earlier this year, although that could just be to stop anyone else from using it.
They also renewed the Parasite Eve name in Europe back in 2018, but who knows if that accomplished anything.
Man. All this discussing over a title. I almost wonder if we should start a campaign to push Square to get the Parasite Eve name again. Because Parasite Eve: Symbiogenesis sounds really kickass for a remake title.
But seriously, if Symbiogenesis ends up being the new name for Parasite Eve, I think we'll grow to accept it. Like, how did we react when Sega announced that future Yakuza games would be using Like A Dragon from here on out?
Incidentally, I know there was no game called The 3rd Birthday, but I noticed that the entry for Aya's sister Eve doesn't mention Yvonne Strahovski even though it turns out Eve was Aya the whole time in The 3rd Birthday. Should we change that or leave it alone?
I mean Like A Dragon is objectively an awesome and more appropriate title than the generic Yakuza.
But if title discourse doesn't help you can always argue about whether the shift from JRPG to Survival Horror was appropriate or not

Bleye knows Sabers. It helps that Like a Dragon was always the Japanese name for the franchise.
I'm of the opinion it should have toed the line between without leaning too far in either direction, as we really don't have many Horror RP Gs.
Sanity is the Lie, there is only Madness.Like a Dragon is not bad but feel weird as a title, it feel more suit for a martial arts game or something like that.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"That's pretty much what it is though... its the successor to Shenmue and instead of the Chinese martial arts theme its Samurai and the traditions that are/were part of the Yakuza.
Also the Tattoos on the the backs of the leads are of a Dragon and Dragonfish (think Magicarp from Pokemon.) respectively and fit their theme.
If anything its more thematic than 'Yakuza' since well Yakuza 0 was the only time the lead was ever actually Yakuza for more than the length of the intro chapter.
Turns out we were all wrong about Symbiogenesis.
It's NFTs.

it can't be worse then the third birthday
New theme music also a boxYou'll probably think I'm blasphemous for saying this, but I think I'd rather have The 3rd Birthday instead of NFTs.
Didn't the market for NFTs die already? Or am I thinking of bitcoin?
Some people either got too slow at jumping into the fad and are releasing stuff in a pretty dead market or just are deep in the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
Wake me up at your own risk. Are you fucking kidding me.
I'm heading over to Square's HQ to throw a brick through their window.
Bleye knows Sabers.
Out tomorrow on PSN.
Get ready for some goofy dialog!
