You know I think I have an idea to simplify the loot system: the loot monsters carry are actually equipment, generally giving something like immunity to a certain status effect, but they can only be used by monsters. You steal them and can equip your own monster with them or turn them into humanoid gear.
Has there ever been a "proper" fan-translation of the first game in the franchise? I love it to bits but it is really horribly messed up in the script department. And since it never got released in the UK (thanks, Square!), it didn't get localized and sorted out over here either.
I don't know about a fan translation, but Square itself re-translated it for its PSP re-release. It replaces a terrible translation with a strangely Shakespearean translation, but at least it's consistent and the spell descriptions etc make sense.
I played War of the Lions. I felt its English localization wasn't up to the standard of the one that Alexander O. Smith did for Vagrant Story, and was thus shit. Changing the character names instead of just fixing the mistranslations was a cop-out. For example, Ramza Beoulve was originally meant to be Ramza Beowulf. Beoulve was something that would never have got past a proper UK English localization.
Spell and item descriptions may have made sense, but it would have been better if they had sung.
Given that there was another character named Beowulf, I'm not sure how that makes sense. Although I admit I haven't looked at the Japanese text.
I mean, they turned "Bracelet" back into "Breath" and you no longer are asked to kill Dycedarg's Elder Brother, so all is right in the world as far as I'm concerned. The spell names never "sung" in the first place.
The family name being Beowulf was a shout out of sorts. That thanks to an awesomely pish translation fell on deaf ears. There may have been another entirely different character called Beowulf, but that was yet another screw-up.
And the spell names and item names not singing means effort was spared. Which sucks. As far as I am concerned, Alexander O. Smith's name should have been on the remake director's speed dial.

The family name being Beowulf does not fit with the romanji. I don't see where you get the idea that that is the proper translation.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerAlso, not sure how the name Beowulf would fit into any themes of the game. I believe Beowulf is known mostly for monster-slaying? I don't see how that fits their family. The character named Beowulf on the other hand is introduced hunting down a dragon.
Monster slaying? Er, I call that simplification. Beowulf fought evil. Like the family of the hero protagonist should have done. Like his father actually did do. Unlike his brothers. one of whom poisoned the man. As for the romanji not fitting? Meh. Just say the name aloud and hear what it sounds like.
As a certain meerkat of my acquaintance would say: "Simples!"
His father didn't fight evil, his father fought in the war. He was an honorable knight and all that, but I wouldn't call the war one between good and evil. IIRC, it was just resisting the invasion of a bigger empire. I would call it one of the themes of the game that humans are neither good nor evil.
...come to think of it, the Zodiac stones weren't either. So Ramza wasn't fighting evil either.
I just restarted playing FFT (PSX version) after about 2 years of not doing so, and I have to say that Algus is possibly the biggest ass I have ever met in a game. I mean if he was an enemy and such a dick, I'd understand to some extent, but as it stands, I just have my Wizard deliberately nuke his face off with a boosted Bolt spell. I mean I know I get to kill him later, but really, I wish I could do so now because he just makes everything worse the whole time. I mean in every conversation that pertains to people who aren't nobility, he grabs the Conflict Ball and smears it in dickishness. And on top of being a classist dickwad, he steals my kills.
I usually just unequip him and use him as a meat shield. If you teach him Wish he'll gladly sacrifice himself for the good of the team, mostly since he has nothing better to do other than throw rocks.

Eh, he already left. Still, the thing I hate most is that I had to work with that douchenozzle. Every third word out his mouth is something or other disparaging "commoners".
Ah, the PSP remake brings him back from the dead to kill him again.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI wonder if I should try playing Tactics again. I made it to the 3rd chapter last time, but the roster had gotten too bloated for me to grind everyone and I just couldn't bring myself to dismiss my bros that have been there since the beginning.
You are not alone, and you are not strange. You are you, and everyone has damage. Be the better person. You don't have to use everyone. You should have enough space for all the uniques (including the pseudo-generics) and a full party of generics as long as you're not overflowing with chocobos.
That reminds me, frak Chocobos and their party clogging antics.
Who needs Chocobos? Anything Chocobos can do, humans can do better.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...Reference FF 5.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerSo, great things: One-shotting Algus with a giant fucking Fireball (Fire 4 to the face at Zeakden Fort). On that note, hooray for the scroll glitch.
Oh, and I love the Auto Potion reaction ability.

Everyone hates Algus don't they?
"We are just like Irregular Data. And that applies to you too, Ri CO. And as for you, Player... your job is to correct Irregular Data."
Depends on how hard the game is. If you're incredibly unlikely to lose, then yes people are going to reload if anyone dies. On the other hand, if the battle itself is something you've been pounding your head against for a while, you might be tempted to take the loss of the unit in order to accept the hard-won victory. I know I lost a few units on my first play through of FFT. Same with the Fire Emblem series.
