Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd be surprised if they bring back the Jane/Thor romance. I'm pretty sure the "Love" part in "Love and Thunder" is referring to Valkyrie's plot.

I'm fully expecting Jane to become Thor in the first act, and the narrative is split between Thor hanging out with Korg and Jane-Thor's romance with Valkyrie.

So, they are airing a Spiderman Marathon, so both the Spider-Man Trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man Series are airing on Space.

Right now, the original Spider Man is on. Still a fun film. I'd totally forgotten about the organic webs oddly enough.

I still think Amazing's version of Electro was one of the more powerful versions (he was clearly cribbing from his Ultimate Spiderman incarnation.

When we also take Spiderman Into The Spider Verse into account, I'm reminded that Sony can make good Spiderman movies. I don't get where they seem to go pear shaped. How do they keep botching this?

Oh right. That dude wasn't Max Dillon (Electro is the only character from that show not portrayed by any version of his comic counterparts civilian identity), but damned if he wasn't a big deal.

Then again, Electro is one of those Almighty Idiot types. He could be ruling the damned world if he knew what he was doing.

The people who made Spider-Verse and the people who make the live-action movies are different.

Then they should have those people making the live action movies too.

Hell, maybe there'd have been less all of spidey's villains are Tony Stark enemies in Homecoming and Far From Home if they'd done that.

Yeah, one issue with the MCU's take on Spidey was that they were molding him to be a successor to Tony Stark rather than being a hero in his own right. To the point of changing the backstories of his rogues gallery to be Tony Stark enemies instead.

If things had kept going, they'd probably have made all of the Sinister Six be former rivals of Tony Stark.

Well luckily Tony's dead now & by the time Spider-Man 3 would have came out, everyone would be long over it.

So to continue the whole Tony's legacy is just writing at that point.

I mean it's not like their original backstories were particularly compelling. Them being mad at Tony Stark is more of a footnote to explain their motives than anything else.

I actually kind of liked how in the comics a lot of Spidey's rogues gallery were basically a bunch of losers who got superpowers or super tech or something. They were basically a foil to Peter Parker himself, a loser who got superpowers. Heck, Peter was initially about as self-centered as they were until Uncle Ben's death.

Mysterio for example was a special effects guy who dreamed of becoming famous in Hollywood. Problem was, he couldn't act for shit. So he decided to become a crook instead. Then his first outing was foiled by Spidey, and he's hated Spidey ever since. Pretty much every single scheme Mysterio has come up with after that has been a scheme to make Spidey look bad or kill him (preferably both).

I love Vulture and Mysterio in and of themselves, but that they were both just two more baddies who happened to have beef with Tony Stark is uh, a tad distracting and sorta undermines this version of Spidey. I think we've had quite enough of those.

In the grand scheme of things, however, they're pretty comfortably near the top spots of best Spider-Man movie villains.

I thought it was because he wasn't considered handsome enough to be a leading man. Did they retcon that?

He was basically a special effects and stunt guy who had a pretty good career doing that. But it wasn't enough for him because he wanted to be "A-list Hollywood actor" famous. His acting career never went anywhere, though.

According to The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe which first detailed his backstory, he got the idea to frame Spidey as a crook to replace him as a hero from a joke a friend of his made while he was whining about his acting career being in the toilet.

That really kind of says everything you need to know about Quentin Beck. He's willing to commit horrible crimes and frame and kill a hero for nothing more than attention.

That's the point of "Mysterio" - he's an attention whore. With the hologram tech he could have gone legit but being a crook is more fun.

I would've loved to see how they would do the Rino and the Scorpion.

Heck, he was already legit in the comics and had a successful career in special effects and stuntwork. But he wanted top billing.

Scorpion...hoo boy. He's one of Spidey's more pathetic villains despite still being a dangerous criminal, and that's saying something. About the only ones more pathetic are the joke villains like White Rabbit (though she's still pretty dangerous to normal people).

Oh, and Shocker. Nobody respects Shocker. And for good reason.
