Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] This taking into account accents? Shakespeare is really off until you give it a historical northern accent. (You also lose a lot of the dirty jokes—hour and whore used to sound the same)

Calgary's one of the more diverse cities in Canada, the third-most-educated, and recently reelected their quite popular Islamic mayor, Naheed Nenshi.

They may be very conservative - especially economically conservative - but they don't seem as bad as people are (in jest) insinuating.

By conservative, do you mean conservative by Canadian standards?

Honestly, even if Jones loses, I think it's interesting that it's this close. I guess Roy Moore is just that terrible.

I shouldn't be stressing over the inevitable loss in fucking Alabama, but here I am, stressing out over a race in Alabama.

[up]I mean, Alberta's still Canada. Even conservatism is nicer there.

"Come to think of it, how many actually talented conservative comedians are out there anyway?"

Not that many. I guess Dennis Miller, but he's a post-9/11 convert, and he hasn't really been funny lately.

Moore’s lead just dropped to 0.1%...and as I was typing, it flipped to Jones! Still that razor-thin margin, though.

Yes, I'm using Canadian standards, since Calgary is in Canada. By Canadian standards, Calgary is very conservative - probably the most so in the country, at least in economic terms.

One can't judge any other country's politics by American standards, because America has two parties - one that's a mix of conservatives and centrist liberals (and a few social Democrats who, judging by this site, the rest of the party hates), and one that's composed of evil fascists. That is not normal.

[up] Most of us don't actually hate Social Democrats. We just hate it when they do or say really stupid shit. And even that wouldn't be a problem if it weren't really prominent ones saying that shit. Personally, I just wish they would think before tweeting or saying anything.

Well it depends on what you define as normal I guess. The political situation where I live (Brazil) is arguably worse than that.

Apparently Moore's writing just one speech regardless of whether he wins or loses.

The Moore campaign tells me he’s writing one speech and one speech only, calling tonight “an opportunity for the Judge to call America back to her foundational principles regardless of what happens in the election.”

Dennis Miller is terrible. He did this racist thing when Sonia Sotomayor was sent to the Supreme Court. He was on some Fox News show and he appeared with a rose in his teeth and he did some dance move, intended to mock Sotomayor's heritage.

Problem with a lot of conservative "humor" is that it all too often punches down. If you're going to punch in comedy, you gotta punch up.

Miller used to do some good work in the 90s, but he lost his damn mind after 9/11. I hoped that a little bit of time in the conservative stewpot he used to loathe so much would make him come to his senses, but it hasn't happened, and it doesn't look like it will ever happen.

Erick Erickson has suggested that if Jones loses tonight, it might be a signal to Democrats to be more open to pro-life candidates.

Honestly, not making pro-choice beliefs a purity test for Democrats might be a good idea. Pro-life Democrats will have much more street cred when calling pro-choicers out on their bullshit stuff (like the "abortion is reversible, and doctors are required to tell patients that" law) and won't actually be able to prevent abortions (because Roe v. Wade is settled law).

I really dislike the thought of throwing choice under the bus that way, especially because the people hurt by it are going to be some of the most vulnerable, and I'm afraid it might turn into Democrats slowly shifting rightward, but it's food for thought. My instinct is to be against it, though.

From 538:

What are we waiting for? We still have more than half of Jefferson County, Mobile County and Montgomery County out. That’s good for Jones. We also have all of Dallas County out. Also good for Jones. There’s still more than half of Baldwin County out. That’s good for Moore. The count at this time is very close. Hold on.

Jones is behind by about 6,000 votes with 81 percent reporting, but almost all the areas that are still outstanding are good for him. That’s probably enough to make him the favorite, but Jefferson County’s tally so far is very favorable to Jones. It’s possible there are still a lot of outstanding GOP precincts there. You’d rather be Jones right now, but it’s still too close to call.

Write ins are 1.5 percent, and the race is getting even closer with 87 percent, but still in doug jones's favor.
