Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Flee to a blue state
Oh really when?Probably this. I have what I kinda consider a "get out of jail free" card in the form of a Canadian passport and an unbroken chain of blue states from here to the border.
But besides, I find that unlikely. All-out war is pretty impossible, I think. I wouldn't worry too much.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonOn Earth-2, Hillary would've been hamstrung by a Republican Congress.
And there'd be less of a chance of a 2018 Blue Wave with a more unified Republican Party.
Still, I think I would've preferred to be on Earth-2.
"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."I just want to be prepared for ANYTHING. And "anything" includes a new civil war. If, ten years from now, we're all goose-stepping across the White House Lawn, I don't want to live in this country anymore.
As unlikely as it is, the civil war thing has been brought up so much I have given it some consideration.
First off, in spite of popular stereotypes that the South is a godforsaken red hellhole, it's not that way at all anymore. The Solid South is breaking up and the real conflict in America is Urban vs. Rural.
Which is the really interesting part, frankly. I am not a native Texan but my girlfriend and closest friends are. I've also read a bit about Texas culture from other Texans online.
For a Texan, their identity ranks as follows: Texan > Southerner > American.
If war comes, I am not at all sure Texas liberals and democrats would abandon their state and community. Such conflicted priorities are common in war from what I know.
Honestly, you can't be prepared for "ANYTHING". There's always going to be something that will catch people off guard. Regardless, I think you're being extremely paranoid.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.“Don’t fight in the North or the South. Fight every battle everywhere, always, in your mind. Everyone is your enemy, everyone is your friend. Every possible series of events is happening all at once. Live that way and nothing will surprise you. Everything that happens will be something that you’ve seen before.”
"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."But, for the sake of hypothesizing, let's say that we DO get another Civil War. Left vs right, city vs country, white vs black, Pepsi vs Coke— whatever it is, it leaves the whole country a shambles and sets back social progress a good century or so. And just to make things worse, China and Russia get involved, so soon we have World War 3 on our hands.
What would be the best game-plan for enduring such a scenario? Where would an American "refugee", fleeing prejudice in his own country in this hypothetical war, find the most safety?

I feel like this maybe isn't the right thread for that.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonMaybe this discussion would be better suited in a new thread like "How to survive the apocalypse".
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, what is then?
Just picture it, the American Refugee Crisis.
European Right Wing Talking Head That Was Saying We Must Protect Western Civilization From Muslims A Year Ago: These Americans aren't really even Western, you know. They're polluting our country with their un-democratic values.

The majority of Californian Democrats are tired of Pelosi and want her replaced.
The UC Berkeley poll found that voters between the ages of 18 and 29 and those who identify as “strongly liberal” have considerably more favorable views of first-year U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris than they do of her Democratic colleague, Dianne Feinstein, who is considering running for a fifth term next year.
tldr; California's gone through a leftward shift and Pelosi's terrible image among the country is a drag for Californian Democrats..

"You can't change the world without getting your hands dirty."Which is irrelevant as long as they fail to find someone better to replace her. Are they still sticking with that Jaffe moron?
Disgusted, but not surprisedIf Pelosi can do stuff like get Trump to make concessions to the Dems I'd be happy keeping her.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonI want to see a law with Trump's signature on it before celebrating.
Sex offender policies in the US are based on bogus science. Even supreme court judges fell for it.

Mystery of sonic weapon attacks at US embassy in Cuba deepens
Botched surveillance job may have led to strange injuries at US embassy in Cuba Read more Soon came the hearing loss, and the speech problems, symptoms both similar and altogether different from others among at least 21 US victims in an astonishing international mystery still unfolding in Cuba. The top US diplomat has called them “health attacks”.
New details learned by the Associated Press indicate at least some of the incidents were confined to specific rooms or even parts of rooms with laser-like specificity, baffling US officials who say the facts and the physics don’t add up.
“None of this has a reasonable explanation,” said Fulton Armstrong, a former CIA official who served in Havana long before America re-opened an embassy there. “It’s just mystery after mystery after mystery.”
Suspicion initially focused on a sonic weapon, and on the Cubans. Yet the diagnosis of mild brain injury, considered unlikely to result from sound, has confounded the FBI, the state department and US intelligence agencies involved in the investigation.
Some victims now have problems concentrating or recalling specific words, several officials said, the latest signs of more serious damage than the US government initially realized. The United States first acknowledged the attacks in August – nine months after symptoms were first reported.
@khohoho: I swear that my mind just can't comprehend how someone like Roy Moore, having made those statements, could be elected to any position of importance in this day and age.
Life is unfair...I remember immediately after 9/11, Jerry Falwell claimed that the attacks happened because of feminism. Yes, really.
Which says all we need to know about him and his ilk. They're reactionary pieces of shit that project their personal biases onto the ultimate rorschach test, god.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIt's interesting to note that it's always god sending disasters because of stuff those people don't approve of, never because of those people did themselves.

Of course, all those times that natural disasters have hit the South you never once here those motherfuckers talking about how white supremacy or racism caused gods' anger. Oh no, it's always because a LGBT person has the audacity of existing.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -Hylarn@209547 : Because that would mean it's their fault because they're doing something wrong. And that can't possibly be true.
"Yup. That tasted purple."
Again, let's say it DOES happen. Worst-case scenario and all that jazz. What would be the best thing for us liberal Millennials (if you're neither of those things, I'm not going to judge) to do?
