Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume the worse, mainly that he would likely want to cut off all imports (and possibly localization of media) and force America to become "self-sufficient". (with a media ban also being enacted for the Propaganda value).
With that out of the way. I want to ask where did the bizarre info come from?

That would start a trade war if 1st Amendment cases wouldn't kill it before it started. And its not like American entertainment is completely made in house either.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Trump attempting to pursue some American Autarky would be horrible, hopefully it doesn't come to that.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnAh, so he's going to shut down Ivanka's business then.
...
What?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.@Firecrawler: While I agree that Trump's statements today are stupid as shit, your pattern of commentary and specific stated concerns lead me to think you may be a little bit too dependent on things like anime for coping with day to day life.
Anyway, "predatory online sales" means precisely fucking nothing, what with how much American businesses also benefit from online sales as well. Rachel Maddow has stated several times: Don't pay attention to what he says, pay attention to what he does. Today's speech is a bunch of patriotic sounding bluster, but what we should be doing is waiting and seeing what this "American made" and "American businesses" theme weeks actually add up to in the end.
He's complaining about it killing American shoppers and shopping centers. The full quote is "It's absolutely killing our shoppers and our shopping centers...if you look at what's going with shopping centers and stores and jobs and stores it's been very, very tough for them...they've had a very hard time, closing at numbers and records that have never been seen before. So we have to stop that, the online predatory practices."
More like I am mostly a retro gamer and the only modern games I get are from Nintendo. Both retro gaming and Nintendo are Japanese-dominated, so it'll cause a huge problem for me if he starts banning imports from foreign countries. I don't even like very many anime, only comedy stuff.

Well, Trump managed to top his prior idiocy, as hard is it might be to believe.
Nonetheless, the way you comment on the matter makes your priorities seem incredibly skewed, to say the least. Especially given the, let's say, hyperbolic nature of the commentary you constantly use. In the end, I doubt very much this will stop the flow of games or other media. For one thing, we've already got massive amounts of it. For another, media is distributed through American channels once it's over here, I very much doubt that any American distributor of anime wouldn't put of a big goddamn fight over something that affects their bottom line.
In any case, again, let's see what he does after this. It's going to be more important than anything he says, given his tendency to verbally flip flop like a dying fish on land.
Also really? Shopping malls are dying because of online sales? Duh. But hoo boy, try convincing customers or the businesses that have benefited from the internet that this is a good idea. (Forest for the trees here, but again, American companies have benefited massively from this way of doing business.)

Yeah, even if Trump does attack foreign video game I think that's significantly less important than his attack on healthcare of millions of people. Both are bad but one is exponentially worse than the other.

"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnI bet Trump does all of his shopping online too. And it would not surprise me if Ivanka sells her stuff online too. Especially since some outlets do not sell her stuff anymore.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOn the other hand. this does add another motive To Trump's FCC choice. Thinking about it. the loss of Net Neutrality and the subsequent price gouging would likely make brick and mortal stores more preferable to online commerce for most items the layperson would buy if the price gouging is severe enough.
Here is a NY Times article on the subject.
https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/07/17/business/17reuters-usa-trade-manufacturing.html
The Master of âKompromatâ Believed to Be Behind Trump Jr.âs Meeting
It was made available to Russian state television in the late 1990s and authenticated in public by Yuri Y. Chaika, Russiaâs prosecutor general, who at 66 has a long and storied background in kompromat. Mr. Chaika benefited from the video, as it destroyed a predecessor as prosecutor general, Yuri I. Skuratov, who had been looking into suspicions of corruption by President Boris N. Yeltsin and his associates.
Mr. Chaika (pronounced CHIKE-uh) is also the man who is widely considered to have been the source of the incriminating information on Hillary Clinton that Donald Trump Jr. was promised at a meeting last June in Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer and a Russian-American lobbyist. And yet, oddly, the accusations brought to New York fell flat, by the accounts of those present, despite their having originated from such a seasoned master of kompromat.
Not much of a bombshell, but interesting nonetheless.
New Survey coming this weekend! The Orange House also wants to eliminate the NAFTA dispute resolution panels that Canada and Mexico have used to enforce the rules that the Americans love to violate. Ottawa probably considers this, and protecting certain state owned industries, as a red line they won't concede on.

Yeah, these aren't going to be good faith negotiations, our "friends" in the US want tributaries, not partners. I'll be amazed if this doesn't wind up ending in a trade war, or a bum deal because Ottawa and Mexico City blink (in which case I'll probably never vote Liberal again, I'd rather take the trade war).
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Basically Trump "merely" wants a more nationalized consumer market, correct?
He also wants to dump low quality shit into other markets, while denying access to the American market. All take and no give.

Fieldmarshal: of course crĂĄcked have defend into a "critic for critic sakes" with the ocasional good article, Trump think like a sitcom chararter because more often than not they have inĂșmintity in their pranks and jokes or in short, I think Trump Hear a stock laughter every time he said something "cleaver"
so more strongman econĂłmics? Well that surely will work
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"The Nevada Independent reported the note told Heller that the individual would lose his healthcare should the senator vote for the GOP legislation to repeal and replace Obama Care, and that the writer, and Heller, would die as a result.
The Independent said previous reports that the senator's office had been broken into were incorrect, but that the individual in question unlawfully entered the federal building.
Oh, for fuck's sake! This doesn't help, and just lets the right paint the left as the violent ones. While people will die if Wealthcare goes into effect, threatening Republican Senators with assassination is not going help!
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Don't you just love violent morons?
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIt's bad for pragmatic reasons as well. Besides making it easier for the GOP to paint the left as straw terrorists, what's stopping Nevada from putting another Republican on the seat? The assassination would also make the target a martyr for their cause..
So it's Protectionism, er, I mean Made in America week, eh?

That's bizarre. Maybe he means fake prescription drug sites and whatnot?
