The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

wasn't he the one grousing about how Hillary couldn't be president because she 'didn't have the stamina'?

Trump accuses his opponent of something he's guilty of himself; in other news, water is still wet.

They should have made him walk the whole way. If an asthmatic like Theodore Roosevelt could do that in his sleep, Trump shouldn't have such a problem.

I think that the others were happy to be relieved from his presence for some time....but it naturally shows how disconnected Trump is from what used to be the US closest allies.

Just to summon up: In the last days he managed to push the leader of Montenegro, complained to the leader of Belgium how difficult it is to get golf course building permits in the EU, had a handshake battle with Macron, told one the biggest German newspaper how bad Germans are, dishonoured the Nato soldiers which died on the behalf of the US, revealed to the world that Israel was the source of the information he blurted out to the Russians (not to mention the "I was just in the middle east" gaffe), and gave the country which produces the most terrorist which attack the west everything it wanted while creating jobs in their country. Oh, and then there was the matter with the White House being in general an information leak.

Him being driven around while the other G7 leaders walk together shows exactly where Trump stands. He is not a democratic leader, he fancies himself a authoritarian leader.

[up][up]Teddy got shot in the chest by an assassin, shrugged it off, and delivered an hour-and-a-half-long speech before even seeing a doctor.

Trump got spooked and dove for cover at the first sign of trouble, which turned out to be nothing.

The Portland thing, besides what LSBK posted, if you were going by the small sample that calls for the opposite of worry. Two people intervened against one loon to help complete strangers. That's a good ratio (in the sense of ppl helping vs that type).

I'm seeing the Trump supporters response to any comments about Trump's stamina is 'but Hillary collapsed into a car' — no, they don't believe she had pneumonia.

[up]x4 Oh, he doesn't fancy himself a mere authoritarian leader; he fancies himself a king. I'm pretty sure he outright said this at one point when he thought no-one else was listening. (And of course there was someone listening, because there's always someone listening.tongue)

So everyone seems to be hailing Trump's foreign trip as a great success because he didn't cause a (major) diplomatic incident. But the bar is so low that a baby could crawl over it.

And he still shoved people around, made himself look ridiculous with this golf cart business, got on NATO about fair shares, and tried (and failed) to dominate Marcon in handshake-machismo.

California apparently rejected a bill that would make voting days a state holiday.

California's Democratic leaders are becoming increasingly problematic. Miles better than Trump, of course, but they're demonstrating the old adage that Democrats only serve the interests of the people when they're afraid of them.

Sounds a bit like a case of "absolute power corrupting". We've all said that making voting day a holiday would help to serve voter turnout, but also that incumbents (or was it just reps?) favor low turnout.

Here's one.

It seems cost was the primary concern, though the linked article suggests it wouldn't have affected turnout in a meaningful way.

I wouldn't judge Trump's international appearance as anything but a catastrophe, because I think the long term consequences will be pretty dire. For one, I don't think that the US should back Saudi Arabia. This country is the main source of terrorism on our home soils, guilty of a number of war crimes (not that Trump is in any way better, in all this chaos the fact the US lead coalition in Syria killed woman and children (who apparently are not beautiful any longer if they have the bad luck of being related to and IS fighter) during are raid this week) and one of the most backwards countries in the world regarding human rights. This weapons deal will backfire (pun intended) spectacularly.

And then there is his systematically weakening of the NATO, his failure to commit to the Paris agreement and his blabbermouth, which pretty much ensures that the US allies will be very careful about which intel they will share in the future. We can just hope that nobody will consider his words an invitation to attack, that the lack of intel sharing won't lead to a catastrophe and that our climate is by some miracle more stable than expects believe.

Sorry for the double post, but since this is an entirely different topic: Can't they simply put the voting on a day which is already a public holiday of the kind, where people are more likely to laze around than visiting family or doing something else which would keep them away from the ballots? (I would say: Why don't you do the votings on Sundays, but I guess a huge number of Americans do work on Sundays.....)

Elections are always held on a Tuesday, for some unknown traditional reason...

And — in Pennsylvania, at least — bars are closed on Election Day, to prevent a candidate from swaying the vote by buying everyone drinks if they vote for him.

We've talked about this before, but the Values Dissonance that comes with politics these days is one of the most jarring things I've ever experienced. I spend so much time here it's easy to forget that there's millions of other people with completely different viewpoints, with sometimes elaborate and worked out ideological foundations for them that so contrary to our own that we might as well be living in a completely different reality than them.

Honestly, one of the things with Trump that I dislike isn't even about him specifically, but how whenever I meet someone who supports him it just gives me this sense of unease. Someone who didn't vote at all is still accountable for what happened, but at least in that case they effectively said that Trump is still not someone they can get behind.

And it's not the virulently and obviously prejudiced people that get to me, but the seemingly kind, reasonable ones who you probably wouldn't have guessed voted for him, and who you could have a perfectly nice and friendly conversation with if it were any other subject. And I'd probably be more liable to assume they are just misinformed or have bad priorities than it mostly being about bigotry, and it just reminds me of the really uncomfortable idea that sometimes otherwise decent, well-intentioned people can make really big mistakes and hurt a lot of people and just have no idea what they've done.

I wouldn't feel that way about pretty much any other Republican politician, which I guess is what it really comes down to: Trump is a litmus test, and one that reminds you that sometimes people have some really ugly things inside them whether they know it or not.
