The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In addition to the highly successful Women's March, the planned Scientist's March, and the Taxes March (is that what they're calling it?), now there's going to be an LGBT March on Washington on Pride Weekend.

[up] There's a Taxes March? Is it Pro-Taxes or Anti-Taxes?

Capsase, those regional differences have been there from the start. I don't believe that alone is enough to cause someone to want to secede. Hell, we could point to regional differences as a factor back in the Civil Rights movement, and that didn't end in attempts at secession. Not to mention that many of those regional differences can be illustrated within one state simply by going from the city to the country. Are you suggesting that cities just up and seceding from the states they're in is feasible? Citing regional differences is far less of a convincing argument than you think it is.

All this fear about secession is doomsaying and fantasy scenarios. I've said many times that a whole lot has to go wrong for secession to even be feasible, and we're pretty far away from that at the moment.

[up]I think the taxes March is going to be about Trump releasing his tax returns, as well as proposing a law that requires any presidential candidate to release their tax returns for the last five years. Seems like I was at least partially right about making laws that codifies all the things we've taken for granted that they haven't been legally bound to do so far.

[up][up]It's set for April 15 and is purportedly to try to petition Trump to release his tax returns.

[up][up]Secession is one thing. Mass insurrection is another. And the latter's starting to look more and more likely by the day.

Get Trump to show his taxes.

It looks like Paul Ryan had to convince Priebus to not resign.

Trump legitimately wants everyone to have healthcare, but doesn't understand how hard it is to do.

[up][up]And yet, it's secession and not insurrection that people are talking about like a serious thing that's going to happen. Hell, people have predicted a Civil War all while apparently forgetting the Civil Rights Movement, which is I think the scenario we're far more likely to repeat.

People in this thread just seem to like going for the most extreme end of doomsdays, regardless of likelihood, for the sake of wallowing in pessimism. It makes discussions in this thread difficult to even read sometimes.

@Aces: I don't think it's necessarily likely, but especially in a time when functional democracy is rapidly eroding, the chances of something drastic happening are significantly elevated, especially if another global economic meltdown occurs under Trump's tenure.

[up][up][up] That partially makes me feel sad for him...

... Unfortunately, I just mostly despise him now. Still, I can't help but feel bad for someone who does want to do something good, even if most of the stuff they do is either stupid, evil, or both.

It just seems to confirm all the gossip about what we've heard about Trump's staff being an absolute poisoned spike pit full of vipers, really. As I recall, there were predictions about Bannon basically eating Priebus alive.

I'd be very surprised. Bannon sounds like a complete psychopath from everything I've heard about him. He's just manipulating Trump to try to bring about his own nihilistic, white supremacist agenda.

@Angelus It may have been humiliating listening to the Clown-in-Chief (thank you Graham's twitter feed) sound off like a 7 year-old and then win, but anywhere people talk politics happen. And forget not that twitter (and other social media) are how news gets to people nearly instantaneously about situations ranging from new tech to resistance against IS occupation in Asia.

As for the clown-in-chief himself, his use of twitter even from an unsecured phone will be endless, damn the consequences. He's a populist firebrand whose platform was "a volley of catchphrases and buzzwords glued together with orange racism." That does not lend itself to official communiques. He may not be stupid, since he pulled off the ultimate con, but what he says never really has any subtlety or meaning beyond the usual "slay the other and heaven will come." Beyond that, his sheer talent of getting away with never actually saying anything much of the time drew him a crowd ready to give his words meaning. note  Trying to say anything substantive only hurts him. Twitter is his perfect medium.

And, on the subject, could someone give @Mikki Kendall some positive feedback? (Her twitter was linked here some pages ago in response to the clown-in-chief planning to overwhelm Chicago with military force). I do not have a twitter and she been responding to a page full of "lol black crime" and "black mothers shouldn't be raising thugs." If it keeps her talking and from shutting down, it's a win. So please do.

I just a little while ago linked to the Twitter account that claimed to be an anonymous source leaking information from within the White House. Well, than account has now vanished.

You know, I'm starting to pity Trump. If that White House leaker is real, than we have a man who just wants to be loved, but his want to have everyone love him, his ego, and his spitefulness are causing him to be used as a pawn by multiple people.

Still hate the man, for the record.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who was only recently given the job, was 'blindsided' by Trump's Executive Order to bring back 'enhanced Interrogation Techniques'. Apparently neither he nor Defense Secretary James Mattis were informed of Trump's Decision in Advance, nor did they give their consent or advice on the Subject.

Republican Members of Congress, specifically the House, shoot down Trump's wishes to bring back 'enhanced Interrogation Techniques'. Let's see if they stay true to their word, or if they'll collapse and follow Trump's illegal request.

House and Senate Intelligence Agencies continue to investigate Russian Hacking during the 2016 Presidential Election. That's a good thing, I think. That means at least a Majority of House and Senate Republicans care about this still.

Will Congressional Republicans remain true to their word and exercise moral principles, or will they buckle to outside pressure and wind up choosing party over literally everything else? I know what my money's on.

Not a chance they would do that first thing.
