The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Trump administration's power center lies in what they call the Big Four "Steve Bannon, Jared Kushner, Reince Priebus and Kellyanne Conway".
So white nationalism, the family business, the Republican establishment... and Kellyanne Conway

Splendid.

White Nationalism and/or a borderline anarchist who just wants to see the system crash and burn, depending on what you believe about him.

Is there difference? I've definitely gotten a "if we can't have it, no one can" vibe from those assholes.

@unknowing

Trump is the GOP sans the veneer of respectability it once possessed. I've described Trump as the id of the GOP before, and I stand by that.

[up][up][up] Why can't he be a White Anarchist that wants to see the System Burn so he can see some good ol' fashioned lynchings, or participate in them, with no repercussions?

Even if the Alt-Righters do get an Administration or Two into the White House (without destroying the Constitution somehow), they know they would never get away with doing any sort of 'soft Genocide' like they want. They'd have to destroy the System in order for any Ethnic Cleansing to happen.

[up][up][up] Difficult to say; Bannon much like Trump goes all over the place in terms of his supposed positions, but unlike Trump (and in what is probably conscious imitation of Putin's style of keeping his enemies guessing), he's good at muddying the waters in terms of what his real intentions are. Perhaps he's just power hungry, perhaps he really wants to see society burn for some reason, or maybe he's a true believer. Hopefully we'll never find out.

Trump cant start a trade war with either the EU or China without hurting the class of wealthy donors who bankroll the Republican party. He'll end up in a war with his own party in Congress if he does.

I know that doom and gloom is very popular here, and to an extent that's an understandable reaction, but with protests on the ground from day 1 of his administration, and rifts within his own party already visible, this guy has serious weaknesses. This is an historical opportunity to remake the left into a more effective political force. If we play our cards right, the whole country will move our way, and "Trumpism" will be repudiated.

This GIF of Melania temporarily smiling at Donald during the inaugural parade when he looks at her. Does it say something about their relationship, or am I just being overly sensitive again?

@Beary Scary: Overly sensitive-someone like her who has spent that much time in front of a camera might as well be a mannequin-you are unlikely to get a good read on them without some serious skill at reading people.

Trump only views Melania as an object and has no real warmth for her and Melania is not attracted to him.

[up] I think Trump views a lot of people, especially women in general, as little more than objects. Props in the grand play that he considers his life. Which, IMHO, is more of a bad comedy.

Even his children are only important to him inasmuch as he sees them as extensions of himself. Meaning the supposed incest subtext towards Ivanka is arguably just another projection of his narcissism. Much like the motivation behind Cersei's "love" for her twin brother Jaime in A Song of Ice and Fire.

[up] In as far as any GOP figure of note is still willing to criticize Trump to any degree, maybe John Kasich could be considered a super-ego figure. Of course, he's got his own issues.

The ego would be the rest of the GOP establishment who don't particularly love Trump but don't want to actually criticize him too much. Paul Ryan and Mitch Mc Connell would fit the bill.

Honestly, gutting of Net Neutrality would probably be the worst thing to me, as I literally cannot survive without the internet. I use it almost all of my day except for when I occasionally go out, especially to talk to my friend on Deviantart, watch Youtube videos and look at art on Pixiv (Those 3 websites would all probably be throttled by most IS Ps), and get Cold Turkey if I stay off for too long.

[up][up]She's also wasting taxpayer money by refusing to stay in the WH. All those security measures near Trump Tower are gonna cost NYC a fortune. To say nothing of the losses that nearby businesses will suffer. And NYC already hated Trump and his ilk.

Are Trump businesses being boycotted? It would be a silver lining if Trump were soon as financially bankrupt as he morally is.

I never once viewed Cheeto and Melania as husband and wife; They're Sugar Daddy and Trophy Wife. I really can't feel bad for her, this is the life she chose. The kid on the other hand...
