Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not so sure. Maybe at the national level but state and local levels seem to be all in for Trump.
Republicans will not let Trump destroy the party by splitting the base and making his own third party. They'll bend the knee as they always have. Trump is the GOP for the foreseeable future.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.That.. will either destroy the GOP anyway or destroy the USA. What, are they just hoping he will have a heart attack?
They're hoping to survive the next election with their seats intact. Nothing matters more than that.
This is not a Machiavellian master plan. It's desperation to survive. They made this bed over the last few decades and now they have to lie in it.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Plus, he can dispense that cash.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."Their plan is to render elections irrelevant, if we're a managed democracy they won't have to deal with getting voted out of office.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnSo basically the same shortsightedness of the fat cats?
That checks out, but now I'm curious as to if a certain so-called "noble wolf" artist-turned-dictator subverted Gemany's democracy thought similar means.
Yes, he did. Years after inciting a violent insurrection, failing, but facing no serious repercussions for it.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.No. Back then it was all about the support of the military, the industrialists, and the ruling class. The German public was a lot more authoritarian in their culture than we are today, and public opinion was based on fear of a communist uprising, and of course the effects of the Great Depression.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."It will destroy neither.
It will, however, target minorities.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesYeah, while Trump lost he didn’t make the entire party loose, as long as the calculation is between “Back Trump and maybe never win the presidency again but keep my deep red seat” and “Don’t back Trump and loose my seat before the party maybe rebuilds in 6 years” they will pick the former.
Some have broken ranks because the choice has changed to being between “Back Trump and maybe get murdered by his next crazy mob that’s can’t tell I’m on his side” and “Don’t back Trump and become politically irrelevant”, but for most they’re still seeing it as the first choice.
The only thing that will break Trump’s hold is elected Republicans fearing for their own lives (which even after the Capitol attack they don’t, they think the attack was a one off) or the party failing so spectacularly because of Trump that Trump’s threat to split the party is the options that costs them less seats.

I don't think "end democracy" is shortsighted, if anything it's the opposite.
They recognize the long-term problems their party has, so they've adopted a solution that will solve them.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIf the Republicans simply "back Trump" they lose most of the independents. Let's hope that's what they do.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history.""They made this bed over the last few decades and now they have to lie in it."
Made their beds means a lot, trump ´pretty much beat the living shit of them in the politcal equivalent of klingon promotion, this is then falling in like after that.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Trump has been referred to as a symptom. Their tumor might have grown huge way faster than they imagined, but he is basically the logical conclusion of everything they have been doing since at least Nixon.

Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido. No noted dissent nor comment, and the ruling itself was a one-sentence statement.
The application for a stay presented to Justice Breyer and referred to the Court is denied.
Pretty much just the SCOTUS hearing Trump's arguments and going "Nah."

Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets.Uncle Grandpa is now claiming to be a victim of fascism after the taxes decision.
We can assume that Karen was part of the dissenting opinion?
"This kimono is perfect for the Hisui-themed festival, right?" - CynthiaHey, don't insult Uncle Grandpa like that, least in his show, he usually tends to care about others.
Semper Fi. Semper Paratus. Vigilo Confido.I’m not seeing any mention of a dissent.

These guys still haven't gotten over it.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianBecause there isn't one; the entire ruling is genuinely just that quoteblock of mine.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets.Referring to past presidents as "President [surname]" is fairly common in US media (not sure if this is true elsewhere), so just this once I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."Yeah in the US you still get referred to by your old title after you leave office. It’s why Hillary is still called “Secretary Clinton” and Schwarzenegger is still called “governor”.

The GOP will suffer in votes and elections...if and only if the assertion that a sufficiently gerrymandered majority of the U.S population is not completely willing to vote for a self about white supremacist by name.
