Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's not just about us here though, and a lot of people cant.
Addressing the last page:
>LSBK: True. To clear things up, I am white. The second reason is very close to the actual reason for me being upset.rant
>Fighteer: Lightysnake basically said it. I'm voting for Biden for precisely this reason. But as long as identity is political, identity politics will always be a must, even in situations like these.
>Imca: Beatles isn't saying you shouldn't vote for Biden, they're saying you're allowed to be critical.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI can see the similarity between gender identity and racial identity in this situation but... I still don't really get it. What's the point in getting angry? Nothing spiteful or authoritative was intended and it's not intrinsically harming anyone. It just doesn't seem worth it.
Avatar SourceThe thing is the criticality hurts our chances right now when this is all a lot of low info people see, it is better to rally until november.
Then have a feild day after, things aren't going to significantly change in a couple months, the party will still be being stupid, but there will be less self harm in going after it then.
So... to change the subject, remember how Oregon had its primary this week? Portland voters passed a tax to help the homeless in the city.
From AP News:
...
The measure's passage puts in place a 1% marginal income tax on the wealthiest residents and a 1% tax on gross profits for the region's biggest businesses. Roughly 90% of residents and 94% of businesses will be exempt from the tax, supporters say.
In less great news, according to The Guardian, the Republican nominee for the Oregon Senate seat Jo Rae Perkins is a QAnon supporter. She's almost certain to lose against Jeff Merkley in November, but yikes.
Also The Boston Globe reports that Democrats flipped 2 seats in the Massachusetts state Senate in a special election; they now hold 36 out of 40 seats.
Edit: Forgot to add this last link. AP News: Democratic U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich is throwing his political weight behind primary challengers to socially conservative Democrats in the New Mexico state Legislature.
Ramos, appointed in 2019 to take the Senate seat of newly elected Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, and Sanchez voted in 2019 against a bill that would have removed the state's dormant criminal ban on most abortion procedures.

Yeah, that's why I disagree with Governor Baker who says we don't have any real urgency in mail-in ballot initiatives. Sure it's a long time until the general election, but a lot of towns have special elections between then and now, and it'd be good if they could have officially expanded mail-in voting options. Especially if those special elections also have local government bills or questions designed to help with covid relief.
... How'd you like to have that woman do your taxes?
Would knowing that makes it easier for people to find information in regards to his taxes?
...oops.
I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyTrump's presidential administration and staff are the most professional in history.
He only hires the best people.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI can see the similarity between gender identity and racial identity in this situation but... I still don't really get it. What's the point in getting angry? Because the status quo for black Americans was pretty rubbish even before the world's most tangerine white supremacist got the presidency. There's a bunch of black folks for whom a simple return to pre-Trump norms will still be cruel, miserable, and occasionally lethal, and they want a president who is committed to radical reform rather than taking them for granted as safe voters and dismissing their concerns. This is pressure on Biden to either work to gain their trust directly or appoint people they can trust to his campaign.
What's precedent ever done for us?Except Biden has a fair amount of policy that is to the left of the Obama years and would represent serious progress.
As much as Biden is rhetorically about returning to the Obama years his policy is very much about continuing to build upon and progress forward from the Obama years.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranA good manifesto is only the beginning. You then need to convince people that you can and will deliver it. Building trust is vital for any politician, and Biden being a gaffe machine isn't helping. The NAACP just had to release a statement refuting his claim that they'd endorsed him (because they do not have a policy of endorsing political candidates, for instance.
What's precedent ever done for us?I’d say that Biden’s tendency to say crass thing actully boosts his trust, it makes him come across as honest.
Genuine misstatements are a problem, but the media is made up of professional communicators and as thus any act of unprofessional/crass communication gets called a gaffe.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ Cyran538 even pointed out that this is probably why gaffes are taken more seriously by the media.
Disgusted, but not surprisedUntil recently, Trump was immune to that. His rambling, terrible truthiness and logic vacuums were labelled "entertainment" by most outlets, instead.
Oops.

> I’d say that Biden’s tendency to say crass thing actully boosts his trust, it makes him come across as honest.
On the other hand,it makes him look foolish thus it could lead people to not take him seriously as a candidate
New theme music also a boxThat is maybe more a case of cathartic entertainment at the expense of a president half the country (and world, really) hates.
And sometimes he really is entertaining to watch.
Optimism is a duty.Yeah, Trump can be entertaining to watch. Too bad that he's the President of the United States and thus his words and actions often affect the rest of the world.
Ah, if only we could have a Reality Show where Trump gets to act like the President, but without his actions affecting anyone but himself...
that was his plan for Trump TV and then he won
"You can reply to this Message!"I wonder if he'll return to TV after his presidency is over.

You all know that you can be critical of Biden while still supporting him in the end, right?
