Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also unproductive.
End of the day, all the key players on the impeachment discussion in Washington already have ironclad stances that they've taken. This isn't really a "write your congressman" topic or a "spread the word" one. It's not even a "remember this for next election" topic, because impeachment will be moot in 2020.
So when the conversation comes around to impeachment, the inevitable result is an awful lot of fighting over something that, ultimately, none of us can actually influence in even the slightest of ways.

Just hope by some miracle that Trump isn't re-elected? 'Cause that's not the likely outcome, given this country's track record

I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa.> Just hope by some miracle that Trump isn't re-elected?
The people voted him in,and they can vote him out again, that's the nature of politics
(translation, yes that's about all we can do)
New theme music also a boxTrump's Original victory was because a lot of Voter Apathy, and even then, he lost the Popular Vote, winning only due to special laws in the American Electoral system.
Now, with most of the country being outright negative against him, boldened Democrats and other things, with the most moderate Democrat having "Let's return to the Pre Trump days" as his main goal....
Seriously, Trump has low chances of winning. He still can, but it would need a lot to do that.

Watch me destroying my countryIf you're American, then get out the vote, canvas for candidates, donate to the nominee, phone bank, organize rallies, fight voter suppression, spam your Facebook with pro Democrat memes.
When that's all done, when election night has arrived and you've dropped off your ballot, then you wait and hope.

Bluntly, yes. That's all we can do.
Impeachment will not remove him from office, that's not how it works.
Have you seriously been thinking that impeachment would get him out of office and we've been sitting on it?
The debate isn't about whether we should remove Trump from office, it's about whether the benefits of making a failed attempt outweigh the risks.

Oh really when? The issue of impeachment for a lot of people is effectively simply establishing he deserves to be censured historically.
But the issue for a lot of Americans is Trump winning because of voter suppression and an insufficiently motivated Democratic base due to the lack of a candidate reacting with the propert level of anger. If someone has torched your house, you won't vote for the one who torches your house, but you might not vote for the man who doesn't react by promising to arrest them.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. When the majority of Americans don't believe he should be arrested and the attempt to do so will fail and will be seen as a triumphant victory for him and proof of his innocence then the value of making that promise is questionable.
Not to mention that even if we do win the election the odds of us being able to punish him once he's out of office are pretty minuscule.
Trump is going to walk away from this without seeing justice. It's disgusting but we have to just deal with it and focus on undoing the damage and helping people rebuild their torched house.
Oh really when?Like I said, Pelosi is wrong.
Not arresting him or his cronies is hurting the Democratic Party. Every time they don't, they validate Trump and make him stronger. The Democrats don't believe what he has done is a crime is the message they are sending to the public and it has made it not a crime.
Her logic is circular and much more effective at legitimizing Trump than a failed attempt to prosecute.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. You know that no debating impeachment message should probably be pinned after all
Oh really when? You want Trump out? Get people to vote against him. Don't expect Impeachment to come and take care of it like a magic button. If its done or not, Trump won't be gotten rid off by it.
"You can reply to this Message!"Sorry, I'm not trying to debate it.
Nor would it be a matter of getting him out. It's the same issue with the fact virtually any legislation that would help Americans and the Senate. Mitch will not do any of it because he does not want Americans to be helped.
I still think the Congressmen should do it.

Sanders has a plan to remove the medical debt many American owe, below is the relevant part
"Under the plan, Sanders says he would negotiate and pay off past-due medical bills in collections that credit agencies have reported. A Sanders administration would also ban the collection of medical debts beyond the statute of limitations and instruct the Internal Revenue Service to conduct a review of the billing and collection practices of the nearly 3,000 non-profit hospitals, his campaign said"
"Sanders is also vowing to use the bankruptcy court system and allow people to adjudicate debt stemming from payments to providers and insurers for medical expenses. He said he would also remove medical debt from credit reports and end credit checking for rental housing, employment, insurance and other non-lending practices.
How feasible is this?

Sorry. Didn't mean to cause trouble.
It just seems like the Democrats don't want to do anything except wring their hands and whine about wanting to be civil, while the Republicans will do anything and everything to get what they want. It's very frustrating
I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa.Frankly they won and there's not much we can do.
Even if we wanted to be as underhanded as possible our options are pretty much nonexistent.
Oh really when?Header pinned re: arguing about impeachment.

Yes because the Dems did not succesfully defend ACA and other stuff. Its just a steep uphill battle to do anything with Evil Turtle in the Senate and Trump having allures of Dictatorship.

"You can reply to this Message!"Right. It's not that Democrats aren't doing anything, it's that there's no a whole hell of a lot they can do with only the House of Representatives.
Fair enough,as far as I'm concerned the only way someone within his party could oppose him and hope to win is by being a demagogue like him
