Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Greenpeace are trying to stop boat traffic in the Houston Ship Channel, the largest oil export channel in the country, in order to resist Trump and the oil industry by hanging themselves off the Fred Hartman Bridge (TXSH 146 over the Houston Ship Channel in Baytown), likely since everyone has their eyes on Houston because of tonight's Democratic Debates.
EDIT: Gotta add more.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Greenpeace may at one point have had noble goals, but at this point they are little more than ecoterrorists.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"...how is hanging oneself supposed to stop boat traffic again?
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference. The idea is that if you hang low enough to touch the ships coming in and out, traffic would stop in order to prevent lives being lost.
Also, it's less suicide and more bungee jumping like hanging.

well in the theory its to make everyone stop and look at them
"HEY LOOK AT US WE'RE HANGING FROM A BRIDGE!IS'NT THAT DANGEROUS?"
New theme music also a boxIt's the same logic as tying yourself to a tree to prevent logging or chaining yourself to a building to prevent bulldozing. Or a crowd of protesters preventing vehicles from entering/leaving a facility.
Yes, they physically can cut through you. But they won't, because that's a crime. Which is precisely why Republicans want to make it legal to just run people over.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Greenpeace is obnoxious and worthless news at '11.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIf they're just hanging there, wouldn't the boats just be able to go through by pushing them to the side?
And risk injuring them? Probably not.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnA non-disruptive protest isn't really doing it's job. I'm not sure they have enough of a message fro this to be worthwhile, but the theory is sound
From what I'm understanding, it is working as the Coast Guard has shut down that section of the Houston Ship Channel and one boat coming in and two boats coming out are waiting at the moment.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."The disruption is sound.
I'm just not sure what they think they're accomplishing by doing it. Protests generally have, like, demands and shit. The central function of a protest is to disrupt a business or society in order to get them to give you something. It's essentially holding standard business operation and social function for ransom in order to force the wealthy and powerful to comply.
I worry that this function has started to become lost and we're seeing more Occupy Wall Street-style protests, that are basically just "I'm mad and I want you to know about it. That is all. You may resume ignoring me now." Hanging yourself off a bridge to tell the nation that Trump and Big Oil sucks is.
Like.
We knew that. Thanks for the update?

- Greenpeace is to be given the silent treatment until further notice
Indeed, it's entirely ineffectual and pointless. Just like Greenpeace.
Unless proven otherwise I just assume that they're worthless attention hogs who accomplish nothing and are infinitely less valuable than the vast majority of environmentalists.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnSo Warren put out a plan for healthcare, but it looks like she wants to keep around private insurers for Mental Healthcare? Earlier it looks like she wants a Single-Payer system, but the mental health section implies otherwise...?
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI thought single-payer was more Sanders' thing anyway.
Disgusted, but not surprisedRealistically, we aren't getting single-payer instantly, even if Congress is somehow magically able to pass anything we want. It's going to have to be phased in over a period of time.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So Trump is going to cut down the clean water regulations because...?
(Seriously, if there is no good reason, then his administration has just reached the levels of a "Captain Planet villain" level of stupidity and shortsightedness... and I know that the creators of that series had to make its villains "unrealistically evil" just so it wouldn't hit too close to home.)
Trump is a real life version of these villains, ain't he?
Seriously, what is wrong with him?!
What is the reason behind this cut-back?!
Obama, favoring the agri industry, and Obama.
Now I can totally imagine Trump still blaming Obama for everything and harassing him for everything once Trump leaves office. Ditto for Hillary.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
Because it's just so hard on those poor industrial industries to have to implement changes that make them produce less waste! Someone please think of the Industrialists!
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I have a plan. Someone disguises themselves as some sort of industrial lobbyist with lots of cash, and convince Trump to make beneficial decisions and explain it to him that it would somehow stick it to Obama and the Democrats. Then when he signs those orders, he'll be none the wiser, acting smug like he did something awesome when in reality he actually does.
Or somehow convince him that Citizens United was Obama's idea.

I know we've talked about paper versus plastic straws, but I want to point out this Slate article and particularly this section
