I wouldn't mind a return to 64's battle mechanics as long as they re-added badges and partners. TTYD's audience felt too random and the fog and ice kept messing me up.
I think it'd be cool if the new one uses scrapped elements from the Sticker Star beta, like the Monty Mole King, playing card area, and Chain Chomp partner.

A thing I appreciate more about 64 looking back is that about half the areas were connected on the map instead of being locked behind pipes/other transportation, and those that weren't were easy access from Toad Town/the tunnels. (Maybe it's just me but I found Rogueport's sewers really difficult to navigate...)

Apparently Sabi (one of the more reliable leakers) says the new Paper Mario releasing this year is going back to basics aka 64 and TTYD style.
Obviously grain of salt and all, but I personally don't think Nintendo has much of a reason to continue in the Sticker Star/Color Splash direction. The latter flopped hard and by now they have to be aware of the negative reception those two games got.
