(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

If it's really that bad, then maybe it's high time the government did something about that.

[up]X3 The government is under the control of the press, it won’t do anything to reign them in. Remember, when it came out that the British press had a habit of hacking telephones (including the phone of a murdered schoolgirl so as to trick her parents into thinking she was alive) the report from an inquiry into their conduct got buried by David Cameron.

Part of why Labour has been having difficulties since Ed Milliband is that we’re firmly committed to implementing the recommendations from the Levison inquiry, which the British press will never allow.

Wow. No wonder people don't trust the press, with stories like that happening.

That’s before we factor in things like the major owners of British newspapers being either foreigners or British citizens resident in other countries who run them through foreign shell cooperations.

He’s got (or tried to get?) German citizenship hasn’t he?

Oh and the nurses pay dispute is snowballing, a majority of the public apparently support a strike, Labour has been campaigning on it but is suggesting a minimum pay increase number that’s not much better than what the government is offering.

Yep, and based on a quick Google he applied for a German passport the day after the referendum.

Only German citizens can get one, so I don't think that passport was for him.

Nope. You can get permanent residency easily this way (if you're not a citizen of an EU country already), but he'd have to get naturalised to acquire German citizenship.

No, but from the summaries I guess that a lot of people will be glad that not all monarchies in Europe turn their royal family in a media circus. Seems like the environment was quite unpleasant too.

Didn't watch (it airs tonight in the UK) but did read the live coverage in the Guardian because I couldn't sleep.

It's got me thinking this interview. See, I classify myself as a royalist. I like the royal family and don't mind the fact that this archaic institution has such a major role in modern UK life. What I don't have time for is all the hubbub around the royal family. It dawned on me when Prince George was born: so many people were all camped outside the hospital waiting for news when there were precisely two news stories possible that day. Story 1 was "woman has baby" whereas story 2 was "Something tragic". And whilst publically all those reporters and journalists would say that story 1 is what they hope to report there was the sick feeling that they actually wanted story 2.

I don't think I am alone in this way of seeing the royals. Is there a way you think that this can be used to try and neuter the power of the press? Could Labour use this as a way to reignite the debate on the tabloids and the outsize influence they have on our society? It's a difficult path to walk since Labour would be accused of outright republicanism and I don't think there is the attitude for that whilst the Queen is alive - but if done well it's a perfect wedge issue between them and the Tories and I have to imagine the Tories would find themselves on the defensive here as they would have to defend the racism and the vitriol the press generated at Meghan.

Speaking of Germany, can't y'all just, like, import some new Saxe-Coburg-Gothas to replace the current circus and start the monarchy from a clean slate?
