It’s a reasonable assumption because that’s how film companies operate. It’s how they’ve always operated, and there isn’t much reason to assume Star Wars is suddenly an assumption - less, even, because of how very expensive a series it is.

Them pulling back on projects after Solo is a clear sign that they’re reassessing the brand’s draw with audiences and potential as a moneymaker. If IX fails, we’re almost certainly going to see significant cutbacks on the series because they won’t have assurances that it will be worth the quite exorbitant expense. Frankly, I’m surprised they haven’t officially announced any changes plans in regard to the Johnson trilogy yet.

I mean, why should they? VIII was a success. Not to the extent of VII, but that is expected when it comes to most sequels. And it is the highest-selling movie on home media this year.

Nothing financially has told them to limit Johnson’s influence on the franchise.

Because Johnson himself is far from the only variable at play in the the series. Him making TLJ doesn’t change the climate they’re in. Nor does his name being attached to the project ensure it overcomes that climate.

The Johnson trilogy was conceived upon the idea that the Star Wars name and universe was powerful enough that people would maintain interest even in an installment that little connection with the rest of the universe or its primary story - conceptually its an enormous risk, but they assumed it would work regardless in the same way Guardians worked for Marvel. Then Solo showed that that’s not the case, that the mainline movies have pull but anything outside of that is on shaky ground. And now they have on the docket a whole trilogy of intended blockbusters outside the mainline series.

I’d be very surprised if one of the projects they’re evaluating wasn’t the Johnson trilogy, because without the security net afforded by that assumption the risk inherent to the concept - even more so than the Star Wars Story films - becomes that much more obvious. That they’ve been mum about their plans and apparently insist those plans haven’t changed is suspiciously brave, given that film studios are characteristically significantly cautious and the same studio is showing that same caution in other ways as we speak.

I think Disney would be kind of foolish if they're not backing off and trying to reevaluate things. Solo flat out bombed and the movies have been steadily declining.

That Rebels 2nd season closing storyline had some great stuff in it. I figured Ahsoka and Vader would finally meet, and she'd learn who he was under the mask but I didn't expect Maul to blind Kanan. Wow. There should be repercussions for all of this in season three, without a doubt. And Kanan was officially knighted a few episodes earlier by the Grand Inquisitor? Who used to be a Jedi temple guard? I like it. Very nice, and well deserved.

Ezra opening the Sith holocron is a bit ominous and not good. But then since Maul has decided that Ezra is his apprentice, I'm sure the temptation towards the dark side will be something Ezra struggles with this season.

This is very enjoyable Star Wars storytelling. And it's become family viewing in my house. My daughters and even my wife are enjoying the series, not just me.

TOM BAKER, my favorite Doctor Who, voices a character in the first episode of Rebels season 3. Oh, that's just awesome. Even better than David Tennant in Clone Wars. gringringringringrin

I am so stoked for the ship designs. The one place where I've felt let down by the sequel trilogy is the ship designs, and these look really freaking cool.

Also, I'm excited for Donald Faison's character, and I'm calling it now: Torra's dad is the inevitable traitor.

I'm interested by the former Imperial and how he interacts with the former Rebel Alliance member who is his boss.

Those ships and uniform designs are great, beautiful! I love how you can see history in some of them.

Also I can't wait to see how a former TIE fighter pilot views the world after thirty years of living in the New Republic.

Getting a lot of hype for this show.

Working my way through Rebels season 3, and just watched "Twin Suns" last night. I like most of what they did with Maul over the course of this season, with his last ditch attempt at revenge against Palpatine using the Sith weapon, and turning to nothing more than trying to track down and finish his vendetta against Kenobi when the weapon was destroyed. His story is ultimately a tragedy. It's hard to say that he didn't deserve exactly what he got in the end and that he very much brought it on himself, because he simply could not let go of his hate. But at the same time, in the end Maul was miserable and alone, and he clearly knew it, but was too stuck in the Sith/revenge mindset to remedy the problem other than by trying to lure Ezra to the dark side. His appeal to him on Dathomir had a certain level of sincerity and pathos to it, surprisingly.

It's good character work for someone stuck in a cycle of self-destruction, someone looking for power and/or revenge and never quite managing either for long, despite his considerable skills. He's just up against too much. In TPM I was cheering when Obi-Wan beat him in the fight, but I think, like Kenobi, I really pitied him in the end.

Between Clone Wars and Rebels, they really fleshed out Darth Maul's character very nicely. I think his return was certainly justified, having seen the end results.

Maul is one of my favorite parts of the show. I do wish we got a Maul focused episode though. He was in several but I would have liked an episode of him exploring Tattooine without any of the main cast.

I know I might have asked this before, but while we're still waiting for season seven of The Clone Wars, is it still necessary to unmark all spoilers except for season six at the moment?

Nthing absolutely loving the ship design in this series. Especially since Star Wars media has been rather starved for unique ship design for a while.

I loved how they turned Maul from proto-Vader to a Foil to Obi-Wan

  • The Battle of Theed caused them both great pain. One was physical and the other was emotional.
  • They lose someone because that person was run through the gut.
  • Aids a Mandalorian in their vision to become an ideal Mandalore.
  • Both ended up as hermits imparting wisdom on a young apprentice

Isn't this show meant for a younger audience? Why would it start at 10pm?

edit: Watching it on Disney Now. I'm still unsure of how I feel about the art style. It's an interesting look but compared to The Clone Wars and Rebels it looks a bit weird.

Is it though? Other than the cel-shading, it looks pretty similar to Rebels’s style to me, at least in terms of character movement.
